nbc bay area's kris sanchez live at the courthouse with the latest. kris? >> reporter: this is the first time we've heard from the suspect's attorney. and while he didn't talk about the suspect's immigration status, bambi larsen's friend who was in the courtroom sure did. we were not allowed to bring a camera in to that plea hearing for carlos arevalo ka reason o. who is accused of killing 59-year-old bambi larsen at her home where she was found brutally beaten and stabbed. this case was delayed to june 14th so that the public defender could review the evidence in the case which includes surveillance video of carranza. his attorney says he's mentally ill. but the victim's friend says even with that mental illness he should not have been in this country. >> he's not currently on the eighth floor which is the recused mental health unit but he is getting treatment. as far as whether he's getting the proper care, i'm not sure. i'm subpoenaing or getting those mental health records from the jail soik make sure that was happening. >> he already had priors. he's b

kris sanchez joins us live in san jose with more on the pressure on the company amazon today. kris? >> reporter: right. laura, amazon's investors are going to meet today and vote on whether or not to tell the company to stop selling its recognition -- facial recognition technology to law enforcement and other government agencies. now, those investors will vote today on a few different proposals. first, one from shareholders who already said amazon should stop the sales altogether from government. and one that said they should study the effects and then report back before continue to go sell it. aclu is to disclose who is buying this recognition software and how it's used. amazon is telling investors that the recognition technology is a powerful tool not only for business but also for law enforcement. in fact, just yesterday santa clara county supervisors defended the sheriff's use of it, though without a formal policy. >> we have almost 2 million people here in santa clara county. we owe them a right to vie sraes. we need privacy. they deserve due process. we can use them in a caref

that's where we find "today in the bay"'s kris sanchez with more. kris? >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. behind this development sign and all of this lush green interior is a lot of really valuable real estate, especially in the line of the fact that google is trying to build a downtown campus. it is a nursely and teaching garden that's been part of the hedge park community for years. the owner filed development plans for the city to turn this lot into a 5600 square foot retail complex. according to the santa clara county tax assessor, it was about $630,000 in 2007. if you fast forward to 2019, the property is now just about a mile from where google is working to make that massive downtown campus a reality. today the public will have a chance to tell that planning director how they feel about this proposed development. but the site is joined for this kind of development. the staff recommendation is the project should be approved. community members held a rally in support of the garden. i reached out to the property owner and the person who operate

francis issuing a ground breaking law to report sex abuse along with coverups, "today in the bay" kris sanchez joins us with the details. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. the pope's new law makes those streets and mandates reporters, but mandated to church authorities and not necessary will i to police. so, the question is, does this go far enough? the pope's decree covers any sexual abuse of a minor, sexual misconduct with an adult, possession of child pornography and coverup by that church leadership. they are detailing how they should go. additionally, priests and nuns must report where required, the diocese is required to come one a confidential reporting system and whistleblower protections are built into this as well for anyone reporting abuse. this really is targeting some of the church higherarchy. the law does go into effect. it will be in effect for three years. the first hard deadline is coming next june when the diocese and thetur churches havo have reporting places in place. >> thanks, so much. >>> 6:02. happening now, parents and students on edge in the east bay.
