what do you know, kris? >> reporter: well, as of right now, cal fire is no longer here because the fire is out. the smoke smell is still really heavy in the air, and about two hours ago, that fire was inching up along the shoulder of highway 101 here in gilroy. this was the scene about 3:00 this morning, off highway 101 and the road that it intersects is east lucessa and the in south gilroy. firefighters arrived and quickly stopped the progress of the fire. i talked with meteorologist kari hall about fire danger, there's no red flag warning because the winds are calm but with a run up of temperatures like we've had, certainly the grasses and the brush are drying out, making them ready fuel for fire. in california, about 95% of wildfires are caused by people mostly unintentionally, so cal fire advises all of us to be careful when we use the power tools, to landscape or clear dried brush, use them before 10:00 in the morning and never when it's windy or super hot as it's been in the last couple of days. mainta

. >> south dakota's kris sanchez live on the scene this morning. the fire is out now, kris? >> reporter: the fire is out, but you can see here behind me that there are still some fire crews on scene, starting to bring out some of the debris from inside that middle business where it appears that that fire originated. i just talked with the fire captain in the last 45 minutes, and he said that one business in the middle is where it started, but the businesses on either side are also damaged. this is a salon and also a boutique and some sort of ice cream shop as well. firefighters got the call just after 1:30 this morning and because of the roof structure, the captain tells me it took about an hour for firefighters to put it out, and it had to be unnerving for one business in downtown los gatos, double d's sports grill, which is down the road, but in the same block. it only recently reopened after it was gutted by a fire back in 2016. that business was unscathed. we expect to see three businesses will be out of commission for a while until they can repair some of that smoke and

how is this being received, kris? >> reporter: suicide is the second leading cause of death for teenagers between the ages of 15 and 19. that's why our state lawmakers wanted to put suicide prevention information right where the students can see it every single day. that is on the back of their student id. i want to show you what this looks like. in the blue area is where the student's name and photo would go. ton back, a text line and phone number for the national suicide prevention lifeline as required by the new california law that went into effect this summer for all students in middle school an high school and college, this is public or private. really all students. according to 2017 survey by the centers for disease control and prevention, 17% of teenagers say they seriously considered attempting suicide. 14% said they made a suicide plan. 7% tried to kill themselves. 70% of them told someone or gave a warning sign ahead of time. sometimes it was to people who didn't know what to do with that information. >> we

abc7 news kris reyes explains how the police tried to stop the suspect just moments before the crash. >> the suspect vehicle was driven by a single male adult and was traveling southbound on lawrence expressway when he failed to stop for a red light. >> reporter: it happened at about 1:30 a.m. sunday at this intersection in santa clara. the suspect is san jose resident 32-year-old claudio perez. he was arrested on scene and charged with murder, driving under the influence, auto theft, and probation violation. perez's vehicle collided with a rideshare car. a 28-year-old woman from santa clara died in the hospital. she was in the back seat. another passenger is still in critical condition while the driver is expected to be okay. >> it's our understanding that the rideshare vehicle was driving within safe speed limits. >> reporter: now, just prior to the crash, sunnyvale police had put the suspect's vehicle under supervision from this parking lot on east dewayne avenue after they deemed that that vehicle was listed as stolen. they even tried to deploy a tire deflation device. >> all four

kris. >> reporter: good evening. i am on jackson avenue and this stretch of street has been shutdown from story road and cinderella causing quite a of traffic in the area. you can see there is an active scene. the vehicles involved in the crash, they're starting to be cleared out. the coroner's office arrived about half an hour ago. we are still waiting for the press information officer from san jose police department to arrive with a fresh update. but take a look at shots from sky 7 from earlier this afternoon. ns what we know so far. a pedestrian was killed by a hit and run driver in east san jose thursday afternoon. the crash was reported at story road and south jackson avenue at 3:45 p.m. the suspect left the area on foot and the intersection will be closed to traffic until 7:00 p.m. police are asking anybody who may have seen anything to please call 911 and for drivers, of course, to avoid the area. now, we have been talking to residents around the crash. none of them want to go on camera, but one person told me

. >> kris sanchez is there live. a combination of high heat, dry brush making things prone to fire. >> reporter: yes you can see how much dry brush there is here along the highway, highway 101 here in gilroy and that's where the fire took off and it took off pretty quick. smo smell of smoke is still in the air. this was the scene when it happened about 3:00 this morning off highway 101 where east luchesa avenue crosses underneath. ed the progressftuion was way more ser in south san jose yesterday where only firefighters stood between the flames and those homes near santa teresa boulevard. about 75 acres burned before firefighters could put it out and though about 15 homes were evacuated, everybody got to go home eventually by the end of the night. that fire was sparked by a car crash that brought down a power pole. in california, 95% of wildfires are caused by people, mostly unintentionally, so cal fire reminds us to use power tools to landscape only before 10:00 in the morning so they don't spark a fire, never when
