let's turn to kris sanchez along highway 17 that saw light snow overnight. you are seeing that snow really coming down, kris. >> reporter: kari, you were asking about, what, 15 minutes ago if we were seeing snow up here, and the answer was no. it just started coming down. the snow looks like little pieces of paper, like confetti. it started snowing 15 minutes ago, but it also snowed hours ago. this is what it looked like then. there was plenty of snow. we saw caltrans going up and down highway 17 with plows making sure it was safe enough to drive, and we just heard two more going by this morning. at the observatory, there was enough to stick. our crew saw people ready with their cameras. >> it's snow. doesn't happen very often. it's cool. i got my camera out and took a little video of it. >> well, you obviously have to document it because it doesn't happen that often. we want to take you back to 2009 when we saw snow in parts of san francisco. you hear that? it's a snowplow going by right now. in 2011 we got another good dusting. that's pretty loud there. in

to turn around in either direction, right, kris?reporter: that's right. so rain here where we are, but this is where folks are turning around because there's snow farther up on the summit on highway 17, a hard closure in place for both directions of highway 17 because of a jackknifed big rig. i want to snow you what those conditions were like this morning. there was rain, hail and then temperatures were about freezing, so it's been a mess up there. chp has chains on some patrol cars and even a caltrans crew got stuck. there is that hard closure and there is no estimated time of reopening at this point. caltrans tells us that they have snow plows working not only here on highway 17, but also on highway 29 in napa, and at the caldecott tunnel on highway 24. they're calling this operation snowflake. might be tempting to get beautiful pictures that we saw yesterday with all of the snow, but today it is just sloppy, it is rainy, and it is slick out here. so stay put if you can. along highway 17, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> good

kris sanchez, nbc bay area news. >> kris, thank you. >>> happening now, the suspect in the half moon bay shooting rampage is appearing before a judge. bob redell is live for us outside of the superior courthouse. has he appeared before the judge yet? >> reporter: he has. that hearing was supposed to start at 10:30 this morning and started only about ten minutes ago. i was able to see the suspect brought into the courtroom, shackled. he had three armed deputies guarding him. the hearing today is about several defense motions that the judge will consider, including a motion for a gag order, motion to exclude cameras from the courtroom, and a motion to stop the media and public from remotely accessing court records through the court's public portal. he is 66 years old and is accused of shooting and killing seven people at a mushroom farm in half moon bay last month and injuring an eighth person in that shooting. next thursday he is scheduled to enter a plea to several charges including murder. he admitted in a jailhouse interview with janelle wang that he committed those shootings and a

cbs's kris van cleave joins us with the new details. good evening, kris. >> reporter: j.b., these new charging documents lay out a chain of events where prosecutors say there were multiple opportunities to avoid tragedy. now, these documents allege that alec baldwin missed the required firearms training before filming began. he was given his own training session on the set of "rust," but the documents say baldwin was distracted and talking on his cell phone to his family during the training. video and pictures from around the time of the shooting allegedly show multiple instances where baldwin had his finger on the trigger of the gun. baldwin has claimed he didweapo forensic review found the trigger had to be pulled for that gun to fire. baldwin's attorneys did not comment today but have called the charges a terrible miscarriage of justice. it will now be up to a judge to decide what charges could move forward to a possible trial. but as it stands tonight, if convicted, baldwin could face up to five years in jail. j.b. >> kris van cleav

"today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live this morning.he good news is the young child is going to be okay. >> reporter: yeah, a young boy is going to make a full recovery, but was treated at a trauma center for puncture wounds. sometimes that means bites, sometimes clawing, but he is going to be okay. we know this happened about 7:00 last night in rural san mateo county, just off tunitas road about 7:00 last night along a single lane windy road. san mateo sheriff's deputies tell us the boy was walking on a trail with his family, he got a little ahead and that's when the mountain lion pounced. the department of fish and wildlife now handling the search for that cougar. we'll tell you if you're headed out for a run or hike, the advice from the national park service is if you come across a mountain lion, make sure they have a way to get away. they are generally non confrontational, and make yourself look really big and don't run or squat down. keep the kids and pets close. in san mateo county, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >>> it's a col

we're going to turn to kris sanchez, live on highway 17 near bear creek. i hope you're dressed in layers. how is it looking out there? >> reporter: you know i come prepared, but honestly it's hard to compare for something like this. we're getting rain and it is really cold out here, so the roadways are really terrible. you see over my shoulder here, chp, this is where we are, at bear creek road where they are turning people around and you see the freeway closer sign, closed in both directions. we drove up here about 3:30, 4:00 this morning, and before that the conditions were not much better. we can show you what the drive looked like at highway 17 a little earlier this morning. that was as one driver was making their way from the ben lomond area into san jose. it was a plot at granite creek road, you heard from our colleague, aaron kauffman. conditions have been bad with low visibility, rain, snow and wind as well. caltrans was out with snowplows this time yesterday, and today there are at least three snowplows ready at highway 17, three at highway 29 in

nbc bay area's kris sanchez has been monitoring that conference. you've been digging into these numbers, a lot of numbers to look through. >> a lot of numbers. the silicon valley has always been interested, but some of the data might surprise you. it's yearly report, and while the country struggled through years of the pandemic, silicon valley people, technology, were powering the nation as we sheltered. here's the president and ceo. >> silicon valley, during the pandemic, went gangbusters. a lot of us frankly have survivor's guilt about all of that. and if i could cap which you were it all in one image, this would be it. look at that. our aggregate market cap grewly $9 trillion during the pandemic, stunning and amazing. that, by the way, shattered all of the records. and so that was quite an amazing and interesting story. so, why do we feel so tense? >> all right. so, the answer to that may well be a growing income gap that's leaving a lot of people behind. according to that report, silicon valley added 88,000 jobs between the middle of 2021 and t

nbc bay area's kris sanchez is in san jose with more on the ways local food banks are already scrambling. >> reporter: local food banks like second harvest silicon valley are trying to figure out how they're going to stretch their dollars even farther because they know they will feel that ripple effect when people lose calfresh benefits. for a single person for the last three years of the pandemic, that benefit was $281 per month. in march, people will get just $23. the numbers will be even more dramatic for larger households. second harvest silicon valley expects more people will turn to them when they lose that state assistance, and, like the rest of us, food banks are struggling with rising food prices. their costs are up anywhere from 2% to 18% depending on the product. one says the food bank is already seeing a spike because of inflation. >> starting in early janl of last year, we started seeing another uptick in demand due to inflation. in our high cost of living area for so many families, food and fuel is a very large percentage of their budget, so our numbers are back up to almos

"today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live for us there this morning.efighters learning anything about the cause of this explosion? >> reporter: you know, it is going to be a long process, but you know how compact these houses are here, especially in this neighborhood, and this street is still blocked off because the investigation continues. it's just not safe for some of these folks to come home. this is what the street looked like just after the explosion happened about 9:20 yesterday morning. one person was killed. another person was sent running for help. the victim was found eventually in the rubble of that collapsed home by specially trained dogs. this is a home on 22nd. it was 9:20 when this happened, so there were plenty of witnesses, including one woman whose car windows were shattered in the blast. >> the lady that was living in the house came running out and she was half charred, the back side of her body was charred. >> she was pointing and yelling. >> it was just the window that exploded. >> and then it fell onto the car? >> fell onto the c
