cbs' kris van cleave reports on how airlines are hoping to avoid a repeat of last year's turbulence. lines a the airport. the memorial day travel rush is taking off. >> there is a lot of people. i'm from a really small place so, this is a little bit overwhelming. >> reporter: since saturday, tsa has screened over 12.1 million people, nearly 700,000 more than 2019. airlines added thousands of employees since last summer, when more than 45,000 flights were canceled. >> the biggest issue we have is weather and air traffic control delays. that's what we need to focus on. >> reporter: faa staffing issues prompted airlines to reduce flying and caused delays at the denver airport last weekend. you were very hard on the airlines about their staffing issues. a year later, atc is still having its own staffing issues. why hasn't that gotten fixed? >> well, look, we're going to own anything that's under our control. we're talking about 5% of the issue. we're hiring up, staffing up. meanwhile, the airlines, which are responsible for a much greater share of the delays and cancellations have made i

nbc bay area's kris sanchez joins us live from the scene. the students are okay?students are okay. when we got here they were lined up outside the school bus and they were onboard at the time and the teacher tells us that none of the students nor the driver were injured in this crash and police say that none of the other drivers involved were injured either. this was the scene at 8:00 this morning when dispatch started getting the walking lanes of ahsana way and this is near a costco store here and not too far from the east ridge mall. though it happened on san jose city streets and sjpd was diverting traffic here and it is the job of the chp to investigate involving school busses. a public information officer ross lee told us that the bus driver started a chain reaction as the light on capitol expressway turned red and that the driver couldn't stop in time and the bus rear ended a corolla which hit another car, which hit another car. in all, five cars and a bus were involved. drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors. at 9:00 this morning we watched as severa

nbc bay area is kris sanchez spoke with several people who say they are shocked by all of this because they say he was a star student and comes from a loving family. >> this is what 21 year old carlos dominguez looks like today after his arrest on murder charges yesterday. people who knew him in east oakland, where he grew about, painted a different picture. he was arrested near the uc davis campus where a student was stabbed to death. police say 50 different witnesses saw him at the park and he was wearing the very clothing that witnesses reported seeing the day the second victim was stabbed to death. the horror extends to oakland where carlos dominguez is remembered as a student athlete who played football, track and soccer at the high school. a former coast said his parents were active volunteers who were proud of their son. >> he was willing to play and learn. he was not that aggressive. i did not think he had an aggressive bone in him. he has a gun problem. i don't know if something happened between the time he left high school and uc davis. >> a statement reveals one thing that h

nbc bay area's kris sanchez shows us how he's doing now and how his family is giving back to the hospital that chped his life. >> reporter: this looks like any ordinary day before school, but for 11-year-old collin beach, it's extraordinary. that's because on this day in 2020, he went from carving that jack-o'-lantern to fighting for his life. >> that i started having a huge headache. >> it feels so intense. and then he started having some seizures, which we later learned were strokes, so by the time the ambulance got here, he was completely unconscious. >> then i remember, like, waking up in the hospital. that's kind of it. >> reporter: he suffered a massive brain bleed the night before his 9th birthday when an arterial venous mmalformation, tangle of blood vessels likely in his brain his whole life, ruptured. he spent 33 days in a coma. he survived a craniotomy and surgery to remove that abm only to emerge from the coma with significant brain damage and a body too weak to do anything for himself. he was transferred to valley medical center's pediatric rehabilitation sent or the go from

it seems, right, kris? >> right. we have known that the city of oakland was going to launch a big outreach effort this week along with some other community organizations now that the end of the eviction moratorium is coming up on july 15th. but in alameda county outside of oakland, eviction protections ended on sunday. however, immediate midfield tenants can be evicted for back rent that accused after the end of the eviction. they expect up to 350 evictions per month as landlords try to make back money they lost during those three years that tenantings were allowed to stay put even if they couldn't pay. but some tenants' rights activists are warning people to steer clear of this site, alameda renters rights dotcom because it is not a county site. it is run by a california apartment association. they say some of the information may not be completely accurate. they are suggesting if you have questions about your eviction status, you stick to the official sites by your county or your city. >>> thousands of hol

are police saying anything at this point, kris? >> they say they believe the person who was shot was, in fact, shot inside that car. antioch police say two people ran from the scene of that crash, and while officers and paramedics tried to save the driver's life, it was too late. this all happened in the parking lot of a 7-eleven store on hillcrest avenue, not far from highway 4. it was about 7:40 last night. officers found the driver in the seat of his car, not breathing. police say it appears he was shot at least once inside that dark gray toyota sedan. despite life-saving efforts, the driver did not survive. witnesses told police two people ran from the car after it crashed. they have not yet been found. the detectives with the violent crimes unit for antioch police are now handling the investigation, they are also working with witnesses to try to identify those suspects. but at this point, those two people who fled are still on the run. anyone with information is urged to call antioch police or provide it anonymously via text.

"today in the bay"'s kris sanchez is live in san jose this morning.call that place home, they say once they're forced out, they have nowhere to go. >> reporter: they've been getting notice over the last couple of weeks or so, but they're still there because they don't have anywhere else to go. a lot of these folks, they're living in rvs, in their own cars. some of them living in tents, some just living on the street next to the coyote creek. they have been promised that housing is coming and some of them are on wait lists, but the city can't build tiny homes fast enough. we talked with one person living along the creek and has been for the last 20 years. >> it is my community, and it's really sad, because where are we going to go? this is the last resort. we're here because there's nowhere to go. >> these people are going to be scattered to the wind or get on the merry-go-round that's tiny homes. you go into a tiny home for six months and then you're right back out onto the streets because there isn't permanent supportive housing to go to. >> reporter
