nbc bay area's kris sanchez live if san jose with how people will be answering the census a little differently as well this time around. kris? >> reporter: well, hi there, laura. these are some of the community leaders who are running through exercises about the difficulties of outreach and the barriers pon them as we're in the heart of silicon valley and would you believe this is the very first census where people will be able to answer the census online, on their phones, on their tablets, on their computers and not just on a paper form. so it is a very different day for the census. now, making people feel comfortable with that technological change and giving their information electronically is just one aspect of santa clara county's outreach. the county is also working with the community groups to ease people's fears about answering the censusasio status. and this is a big one right now. 9 county's census director told me that part of that effort is explaining that the answers that people give on the census are not meant to be tracked back to them individually. >> people's individual answers

"today in the bay" kris sanchez joining us with what happens next. kris?: hi there, marcus. this is the complex in question. it is home to about 60 different families who say they can't afford to pay more than they already do, even if they could find housing that costs just a little bit more. the folks who live here$1,000 a month. and they have been worried about losing their homes ever since this other development started going up down the street. this is rock street in mountain view. that was also affordable housing, rent-controlled housing that will now become luxury townhomes. at the mountain view city council meeting, a representative told counsel they have helped to pay future rent and moving expenses for people who needed to move and who qualified in the past and that they are willing to do it again. while the community members rallied before the start of this conversation at the council meeting it ended with six voting in favor of the demolition and one council member abstaining. but the council members are really a bit stuck in this one because th

nbc bay area's kris sanchez joining us now. kris, there are specific bay communities that are at risk. >> overall california's children are pretty -- the vaccination rate for public school children. but there are those pockets of unvaccinated children at the following private and charter schools where only a third to less than a quarter of the students are vaccinated. they are marin waldorf school in san rafael, berkeley rose waldorf school as well as steele lane elementary school in santa rosa, live oak charter in pet loouma, and then there are three in sebastopol. sunridge charter, reach school, and sebastopol charter school. this is according to california department of -- it is very difficult to opt out of vaccines. there has to be a medical reason, not a personal one. so most of the cases here have been in adults. that's in california. there are 38 reported cases in california. those are adults who were infected abroad because they were either unvaccinated or undervaccinated. in southern california some students and faculty

nbc bay area's kris sanchez just got off the phone with the california department of health. so talk a little bit about who's most at risk. >> i was surprised to see, laura and marcus, that some of the people who got sick with the measles were actually adults who were fully vaccinated. i want to get right to what the health department told me about an hour ago. there are now 38 confirmed cases of maz lz statewide. that's holding steady. 75% of those folks who got sick are adults. while the majority, 65%, were unvaccinated, some were undervaccinated, that is, they only had one dose of the measles vaccine. they may not have known that. and almost everyone who got the measles got it while they were out of the country but then spread it here at home because of the high vaccination rate in our state. so who needs to worry here? if you're going to be traveling out of the country, especially to a country that has some measles activity right now and you are younger than 62, you should ask your doctor about a booster shot. you might need one. if you are older than 62, then you might b

kris sanchez is live with us. kris, do we know what happened here? >> reporter: we know that person was stabbed here in the parking lot of this busy dollar tree store. we know that that person died. we don't know who stabbed him. and we don't know why. but this was the scene just after -- right around 7:00 when that stabbing was reported. san jose police tell us the man was stand at least one time and was rushed to a hospital. but at that point it was too late to save him. his identity will not be released until the coroner properly notifies his family. as for the suspect, police are not giving us a description if they have one yet. but a woman who works apt a different store in the shopping center reported seeing several people chasing that victim before he was attacked. now, overall the crime incomes dropped by 4.5% or so in the first two months of last year compared to the year before. but violent crime went up 2.6% in the same period. police report a 5.5% decrease in overall property crime in january and february of this compared to the same time

kris sanchez is live at stanford with what's next. kris, what happened here?still trying to figure that out. at this point it looks like the whole deal is on hold indefinitely. at least according to one of the negotiators on the county's team. now, we have talked about this proposed development here on "today in the bay" for you. so you might remember that this is a really massive proposal we're talking about here. we will hoe you the numbers here. 4,000 acres in all in unincorporated santa clara county. 2 million square feet of academic space. 2,600 beds. 550 housing units for faculty and staff. and proposed $138 million over four years for palo alto unified school district. as the supervisor put it, it wasn't a good-faith negotiating effort. that's according to the county. the county wanted to be the primary negotiator in all of this so in theory all the concerns would be addressed. also roads, traffic mitigation, open space protection and such. so that's the back story. the story today is that the county is shutting down all negotiations at this point it se

i want to check in with nbc bay area's kris sanchez. she's been following the story and has the very latest for us. >> reporter: we just got this new information in the last two hours about the suspect, and the information is as shocking as the crime itself. san jose police tell us that that suspect is just 14 years old. and he's accused of carjacking. and that's not the only crime he's accused of. he committed four felonies, allegedly at two different crime scenes, within a ten-minute span. this is surveillance video of that first crime. you see the suspect there struggling with 72-year-old, hitting him in the face and the body. the teen also flashed a gun at him. san jose police say the teen took off from estrada's car from coldwater drive in east san jose then crashed with another car in a red light collision about a mile and a half away at the intersection of story and mcguinness avenue where he then allegedly fled on foot. a witness chased him until that teen again allegedly flashed a gun. for the 72-year-old victim it was a wild c

""today in the bay"" chris sanchez is live with how people are taking this. kris. >> reporter: hi there, marcus. at 9:30 we expect to get a update on the number of measles cases overall in the state. this is 21 day, though, after lawmakers tried to make it a little harder for parents to skip vaccines for their children if they are headed into public schools. you might imagine, that was not without protest. there were hundreds that showed up in sacramento to urge lawmakers to let them decide where it comes to vaccines and risk of measles. senate health voted 6-2 to give them the power to sign off on exemptions for children headed to public schools. lawmakers say that is necessary, because some doctors who are writing the exemption are doing it for pay, not with the child's best interests at heart. now, what we know about the measles outbreak in california today is that there are eight new cases in california this week alone, there are 37 cases, across the state, 680 cases nation i nationwide and this could cross the highest number of case we seen since the measles
