kris sanchez is live in the north bay this morning. >> reporter: things are getting miserable. up and the rain is so fine it's just getting into every little nook and cranny. we know that wind can be down right dangerous. we'll show you what happened in bodega, where a power pole snapped in half because of the wind. pg&e will be address that to make sure folks have power because it is also very cold there. a tree between cottages on drake road. the homes were mostly spared but it took out a gutter, part of the eaves and a fence as well. the pier in santa rosa is about the rain, though. the hillside continues to slide behind two homes that are already deemed unlivable for the time being. and the city is removing dirt. they have plastic barricades up, but it's too soon to tell whether the structures in danger will be spared. the winds in the higher elevations are in that forecast. we're definitely feeling it at the lower elevations as well. the national weather service is working with local emergency leaders, including santa rosa's fire chief, the fire marshal there. he says watc

nbc bay area's kris sanchez is at the federal courthouse in san jose with more for us. kris? >> reporter: hi, there. so, she walked into court without her baby but with her husband, her parents, and some friends. again, she wasn't expected to turn herself in to federal custody until next month because she was afforded that courtesy of being able to deliver outside prison and bond with her baby. her lawyers today are arguing that she should remain free longer than that during her appeals process. elizabeth holmes arrived with her husband and her partner, her parents and some friends and lawyers asking that she be allowed to remain free today. the lawyers are also arguing that she should not have to pay restitution to anyone who did not testify in the trial and to anyone who lost money before the fraud took place. now, elizabeth holmes was walking into court and a woman tried to hand her these documents. she refused to take them, but they do appear related to a lawsuit. our colleague from cnbc is in the courtroom and she was there when a man tried to approach elizabeth holmes f

that's where we find "today in the bay's" kris sanchez, live right now at the highway 17 summit.losures in previous storms, right? >> reporter: right. so i'm not surprised to hear mike talking about full road closures of big roadways, because that's what we found as we were coming up highway 17. it is downright dangerous out here. between san jose and the summit, we saw a small mudslide, we saw crews clearing a rockslide and there were branches down. i wouldn't want to have to stop anywhere on highway 17. folks are under evacuation orders in felton. we have video from around midnight where officers were going door to door, trying to get people to leave their homes. some folks wanting to stay put. but it's just not safe to do that. for some of those people, this was not their first time to be ordered out. >> constantly getting displaced. it's one of the only affordable areas to live in santa cruz county, and it's hard to live here now. >> reporter: so santa cruz county did set up overnight shelters. there's one in watsonville at the veterans memorial building. cabrillo college gym

. >>> i'm kris sanchez. >> i'm marcus washington.rning, flood watches are prompting communities to take action. this is for the rain arriving. for a better timeline, let's check in with vianey arana. the storm is going to stick around? >> we are not talking about a low pressure system, but a moisture tap known as the atmospheric river or pineapple express. we have the rain developing on satellite-radar. if i zoom in using the doppler radar, we have the rain moving through the north bay. it will start out light to moderate and quickly becoming intense. the atmospheric river outlook means the moisture tap stretching from hawaii. that is why it is referred to the pineapple express. a boost of the rain rates per hour. a lot of rain coming down all at once within the hour pan. especially for the mountain areas. this is a integrated water vapor transport. how much moisture and how long it lasts depends on the tap. this is the system that is moving in right now. this will last from friday through saturday and sunday. i took the time stamp o

. >> i am kris sanchez. laura garcia has the morning off. after the news on the storms, you have the data on the drought. >> yeah, lately we have had so much rain and sierra snow, and we are reaping the benefits of that. take a look at what the drought monitor looked like across the region before the update came out this morning. in northern california, we have a lot of orange which is severe drought in the bay area. we are still in a moderate drought as we get a closer look at the way it looks now, and we are no longer in a moderate drought. it's abnormally dry, and for much of the central sierra, it has been taken out of even abnormally dry conditions. there are still areas where we are seeing at least moderate to severe drought. that's further to the north as well as parts of the southern sierra, but around the bay area we have seen a significant improvement and we are abnormally dry as we look back at our water year. i want to look back around lake county. we're still in a moderate drought there, but it's severe as you head off towards t

kris sanchez is live on the peninsula this morning.k about the damage you're seeing where you are right now. >> reporter: well, i'll tell you, it was a really rough drive getting from the south bay to san mateo county, the coastline here. i'm in pacifica this morning. just knowing how many trees might be compromised along the roadways. i want to start with the warning from chp to stay off the roadways if you can, with so many trees coming down left and right. i want to show you what happened in montera in the last couple of hours. a tree on a property fell down, could have fallen on the house, but did not. fell onto three cars that were parked on the property. no one was hurt. here is how the homeowner describes it. >> i just heard this boom, and then i knew it was a tree. it was really, really loud and close. and i checked the tree in the back and it looked like i could see a shadow. but then i opened our doors and there was a christmas tree outside our windows. i came out and three of our -- we have, like, five cars in our driveway,

. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is joining us from santa clara.re at one of those locations where employees have already voted to unionize. >> reporter: right, this is the store here in santa clara, and these workers did unionize. we do know that the former starbucks ceo is going to testify before a congressional committee that wants to know whether he tried to intimidate workers like these and tried to squash their unionization efforts. howard schultz will appear before a congressional committee. he abruptly resigned last week, accused of illegal anti-union tactics. 300 stores have voted to unionize in the nation since the first one unionized in 2021. since then, the national labor relations board has received 80 formal complaints, the most out of any company, and about 200 starbucks workers say they have been fired according to their union. here is what one starbucks worker had to say to cnbc. >> he claims that he knows what we're going through and struggling through and he wants the best for us. well, he continues to also make our lives hard an

. >> kris sanchez joining us now. kris, there would be a key person in the courtroom for this hearing. >> in the lashat someone from the state attorney general's office will be there to take over the case. the decision dates back six years to the officer-involved shooting that became the city's first case of homicide against a police officer. we expect for attorney brooke jenkins to ask the judge to drop charges against the former san francisco police officer, saying that it was reasonable to believe that the officer feared for his life when quetta o'neill ran toward him during a carjacking investigation in december 2017. that's what you're seeing on your screen. those charges were filed by jenkins' predecessor, now recalled district attorney budin. o'neill's family was outraged when her office requested a dismissal dawes the attorney general's office rejected jenkins' claim of conflict of interest. that would have landed the case on the a.g.'s desk. the district attorney says there's not enough to try what is, again,

"today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live with the push on balancing public safety on the streets. it sounds like voters will play a huge role here. >> reporter: yeah, and that's the part of the conversation today, they want the city to shut down those open air drug markets, saying that they are the reason for the city's drug problems and they're going to rally today. now, this happens just one day after supervisors voted yesterday to allow nonprofits to open and operating overdose prevention sites in the city. while the city awaits guidance on whether it can use public money for this, several nonprofits offered to provide the services. this group says that addicts and dealers should not be treated the same. >> it looks like prioritizing law enforcement, supporting law enforcement and addressing the dealing that's happening because we do know that cartels are bringing drugs into our city and it is not the same sort of drug dealing that was happening before. and we want our leaders to prioritize recovery in our cities because the behavior of addiction is causing the loss of more liv

. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live this morning in the flood zone.s is really the last thing people there can handle right now. >> reporter: if you look at the roadway, you'll understand that it is completely impassable, and that's not just because of the rain. we're talking about the levee breach and the folks who chose not to leave are now trapped in their homes and they are going to be there for a while, surrounded by floodwater. >> here is our neighbor's house. they can't get out their driveway. it's just a giant lake for a mile in any direction. >> reporter: peen whooil, other families are doing everything they can to try to get to safety. one family told us they first evacuated saturday as the waters rose here in the town of pajaro after a levee breach, that forced the evacuation of thousands of people over the weekend. on top of the worry about safety, a lot of people here are also worried about their jobs. this is a largely farmworker community and the strawberry fields here are now flooded by contaminated water, so there won't be work for a

i'm kris sanchez. what are you seeing bob with the rally? >> you can see that some of them have arrived already, and there is some sort of rally here and it is going to eventually open up here for the oakland unified school district, but they need a 22.9% salary increase to get them up to whatever their counterparts are making in the other school district, and we believe that most of the teachers are participating in the work stoppage and at least 15 schools, including the oakland high that you can see this morning, this walk-out was not sanctioned by the teachers union, but it is a grass roots organized effort, and teaching in oakland high would continue, but we did reach out, but we are not sure about the attendance. in the district, it has been ongoing since october, and they are accusing osd by negotiating in bad faith. they are announcing a proposed offer to allow the teachers to reach max pay in 19 years instead of 32 and coupled with a proposed 3.5 to 4.5% increase which is giving the teachers a pay raise of 8% to 11%. >> well, the di
