in gilroy, kris sanchez, nbc, bay area news. most definitely. thanks so much, chris. now we continue with our microclimate weather coverage for you. nbc bay area's bob redell. joining us now, he's along the alameda creek in niles canyon. this is where flooding warning has just expired there. so bob, talk to us about the conditions there. yeah. good morning, marcus and laura. you can see why the national weather service had a flood warning issued for alameda creek. that flood warning is supposed to expire at about 15 to 20 minutes ago. and that's because this creek captures so much of the runoff from the rains here in the east bay. it is about to crest roughly 11ft, which is just above the moderate flood stage of about 10.5ft. right now, according what i saw online, it's at about 10.5ft, and it appears to have risen in about the hour and a half that we've been out here. and i bring up those numbers, bececause the prediction earlier this morning is that this was going to crest around 9.5ft. so, you know, this type of thing is not an exact science, but there's definitely

kris sanchez nbc bay area news. well, new at 11 efforts to fight hate in the south bay. sjp invited the public to get more educated about the impact of racial inequality and help prevent hate crimes in the community. the department held a symposium at the mexican heritage plaza. it's focusing on raising awareness and the tools available to prevent hate crimes. we know that presently a lot of people are afraid to report crimes of all types and especially hate crimes, which is, i think, why today is really important. i think this location is really important right here in east san jose at the mexican heritage plaza, to make sure that people feel comfortable reporting these incidents to us, reporting these crimes to us, and knowing that we will be there to fight for them. the symposium is open to all until 3:00 this afternoon. we now know the opening day for a new costco in the east bay. next friday, march 7th, the brentwood costco will open as well as the 32 pump gas station. the store is on high torn ranch road in lone tree plaza drive. the store will become the fifth cos

the bay area get a dose of this heavy rain the north bay keeps experiencing today in the bay's kris sanchezs live for us now in san jose in the south bay. now, kris, no matter where you drive, it seems like it's really going to be a challenge this morning. yeah, you know, the roads are already sloppy, but you heard kari say that the south bay is going to get even more rain throughout the morning commute, so you definitely are going to want to give yoursel extra time as you hit the road this morning. i want to show you some of the problem spots already happening in the east bay. this is 580. this was taken just about an hour and a half ago. you can see there's flooding along westbound 580 near beaumont avenue, ardlie avenue, and on the approach to the eastbound i-80 freeway. you can see drivers trying to make it through those flood waters. and that's exactly what the chp says you're not supposed to do. you can lose control of your car in just two inches of water. and of course, water can cause your vehicle to stall. and that puts you in a pretty dangerous situation. now, the chp has been out

rain today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us live from santa cruz with the work that is happening there village. morning, kris. well, good morning to you, laura. i'm here at the santa cruz pier this morning. and you heard kari talk about that high surf aisory. and because of that, the santa cruz pier is going to be closed today. almost all santa cruz county beaches will close today if they haven't been closed already. i want to show you some of the preps that were happening in capitola village as well.ou see some of those iconic buildings boarded up in anticipation of the rain, the waves that are expected to be up to 30ft between today and tomorrow, local businesses also filling sandbags. now, the fear is that some places that were just rebuilt and just reopened will be subject to the flooding here today. now in san jose, people were forced from their homes when the penitencia creek river ran its banks. the levels were already high and then there was debris and then a tree that blocked the flow. now people will be out of their 16 apartments for weeks, furniture and other belongings ruin

nbc bay area's kris sanchez joins us from the newsroom with the uncertainty for those employees. kris. well, good morning to you, marcus and laura. it was anything but a restful weekend for federal workers who got an ultimatum from elon musk and the department of government efficiency to email five bullet points justifying their jobs by midnight, or be fired. this is the updated lawsuit filed in u.s. district court in san francisco this morning by several unions and other organizations against that department of personnel management, which sent the emails. it mentions the new mandatory reporting program for all federal employees that happened on saturday, which the lawsuit estimates went out to more than 2 million employees. not signed by any government official. now, the suit also mentions this post by x on x by elon musk, further raising the stakes, saying failure to respond will be taken as a resignation. a federal employee here in the bay area talked with us this weekend, asking we conceal his identity for fear of retaliation. many of us are looking at our email on a daily bas

i'm marcus washington and i'm kris sanchez. laura garcia is off this midday. we do begin with that breaking news in the east bay. and w we can now confirm that one person is dead following an officer involved shooting in concord. now, nbc bay area's bob redell live for us there from the scene. and, bob, i know you just spoke with the da's office. what are they saying? well, we also just got a new statement with concord police, who now tell us that an officer shot and killed a man who was stabbing a family member here at the family home on the drive not far from the intersection with willow pass road. you can see detectives here with concord police. they're out here as part of this investigation in that home in question is behind them, behind that white pickup truck. that's the home that they've been focusing on here in concord. the call came in around 140 this morning. police say when they arrived, they found an adult male who we believe was the son, using a knife and actively stabbing another man who we believe was his father. the son died here at the scene.

here's nbc bay area's kris sanchez with more on what's on the table in vallejo and santa rosa. districts across california are dealing with the same issues declining enrollment and smaller budgets. and in santa rosa and vallejo, they're trying to optimize what they expect will be more lean years ahead. we'll start in vallejo, where tonight, trustees will vote on three options one closing mare island health and fitness academy and moving vallejo charter into that space. the second option is to reconfigure loma vista environmental science academy and moving students in sixth through eighth grade to solano weidman and turning loma vista into a k through fifth grade school. the third option closes loma vista altogether, except for the farm. the superintendent says that there will be more closures for the 2627 school year as well, with 19 schools for a population of about 9000 students. we really spread our resources thin by consolidating schools, bringing schools closer, we're able to focus our resources on a smaller footprint and really provide additional resources to our students

nbc bay area's kris sanchez joins us with what it would all mean for all of the good things that san francisco is known for. it's also known for a fentanyl crisis and the havoc that that's wreaked on the streets and san francisco. mayor daniel lurie says declaring a state of emergency is the fastest way to change that. today, san francisco supervisors will hear the first reading of a proposed ordinance that would free up resources by giving the mayor more power in the city's budget process, as related to what the mayor calls core initiatives, as it's written in regard to those core initiatives, the ordinance would waive the bid process, grant department heads more deciding power if the board of supervisors does not act swiftly within 45 days and removes the board from the lease approval process. the proposed ordinance would also allow the mayor six months to solicit donations from private entities and organizations, and to accept donations and gifts. it would also allow the comptroller to transfer surplus funds toward those core initiatives. mayor lurie campaigned on a platform of pu

nbc bay area's kris sanchez joins us from our newsroom to explain some of these charges that they're facing. good morning to you, laura. all five suspects are being held on charges of felony assault, but only the 13 year old was booked on a charge of murder. 18 year old emanuel sanchez. damien is the only suspect whose identity is public because he's an adult. he is among the five suspected gang members accused of confronting the 15 year-old victim, david gutierrez, here, as he was on a date with his girlfriend at santana row on the evening of valentine's day. the other three suspects are 16 years old because the suspected killer is just 13. he is unlikely to be charged as an adult, and if he's trieiedn the juvenile justice system, the maximum penalty is eight months in an unlocked ranch facility. the san jose police chief says gangs know this, and they are taking advantage. adults and gangs are exploiting the leniency of our juvenile justice system, recruiting underage members to commit horrific acts of violence on their behalf. why? because they know that a 17 year old, 15 year old

nbc bay area's kris sanchez is in our newsroom with more on what happened in that courtroom. chris. good morning to you, marcus and laura, the 21 year old suspected of dealing the drugs that led to the overdose of a 15 year old girl and a 16 year old girl, faced a judge on those charges today. those teens did survive. ramon nunez will remain in custody until at least march 12th, when he will return for a bail hearing and to enter a plea. at this point, he faces charges of homicide and at least one count of providing a controlled substance to a minor. nunez was also in court yesterday to face charges in the overdose deaths of 16 year-old gia walsh, a student at santa rosa high school, and her 18 year old boyfriend logan camp, who went to montgomery high. rather than request charges in that case right away, the sonoma county district attorney's office requested 60 days to build their case because they want to try him for homicide. until then, nunez is being held on $2 million bail. here's what the prosecutor said following that hearing. well, the issue is his knowledge. so any other v
