i think kristen is probably right. i think you'll probably hear a statement and not questions when he gets back to the white house. as for what happened today, he spent about two hours behind closed doors with staff members of the senate intel committee. about a half dozen people, i'm told. none of the senators present. and kushner was not put under oath for this. that's common. but it is a crime to lie to congress. so it's not as though he could sort of talk out of school without, you know, possible consequences here. but he's not formally put under oath, like you would see if he appeared at a full open committee hearing or a closed committee hearing. tomorrow it will be more like what we have seen on television lately with these open hearings behind closed doors with the house intelligence committee. he will meet with actual members of the committee, not just staff. so you can expect that those questions might be a little bit more pointed, a little bit more politically tinged, and less sort of the broad fact-finding

my colleague from here at the white house, kristen welker, is in paris preparing for that news conference get an opportunity to ask the questions we're asking of the president. tee up this day and what you're experiencing there and what you're hearing from white house officials on their arrival. >> reporter: look, the white house incredibly optimistic about this visit, the optics that we're witnessing, of the president arriving at the official residence of the president since the 1800s will help him turn the page on the russia controversy, which has only been deepening at home as you've been talking about throughout the hour. we've seen him arrive here. we're expecting him to get -- there he is, shaking the hand of the french president. you'll remember that initial handshake that they had at the nato summit in brussels, which got so much attention, that white knuckled, extended handshake. we saw a very different handshake today, a lot of smiles t seemed much friendlier. that is part of the goal, to reaffirm the goal of the commitment between the united states and france. france, of course

thank you, kristen. now, so far the only statement we've gotten from the administration outside the president's tweets has been from secretary of state rex tillerson. ha hans nichols has that story from the pentagon for us. what can you tell us? >> the early assessment is that this missile that north korea fired did successfully re-enter the atmosphere. they saw it splash down. that doesn't mean that whatever sort of vehicle they had in there could have carried a nuclear device, but it does give you an indication that this was a successful re-entry and that is a significant step forward on what could be what the pentagon is saying as well as the state department an icbm. now, the response so far, mostly as you mentioned, chris, coming from the state department. they really want to give diplomacy one last try. when you look at some of the statements coming out, it's not a china focused policy. they want to broaden it. they want to get other countries involved. here's a statement from tillerson last night
