i am kristen sze. c.h.p. say drinking and reckless driving were factors in the terrifying tragedy. the mercedes with the young people crashed into ford pickup on freedom boulevard. our reporter is at the c.h.p. office with the very latest. matt? >> yes, the accident took place a mile away from the c.h.p. office here near the high school but it does not appear that any students from that school were involved in the crash. the crash took the lives of several young people. traffic accidents do not get much worse hand this. seven young people, ages 16 to 22 were riding in a mercedes after 8:00 last night on freedom boulevard in santa cruz county when the driver swerved into oncoming traffic hitting a ford pickup truck head on. three people from the mercedes died at scene. another died at at the hospital. the three other passengers were taken to hospitals with life threatening injuries. alcohol appears to be a factor. we had a couple of witnesses reporting reckless driving, things like excessive speed and passing over the double yellow lines and a witness said there were females out of

. >> i'm kristen sze. the investigation into the cause of the fire is under way. meantime neighbors described firefighters' rescue efforts this morning as truly heroic. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield has been on the scene all morning at 24th street and treat avenue. amy? >> reporter: the firefighters have figured out that most of the damage was to the front living area of the apartment. it is still under investigation but they say at this point nothing looks suspicious. but they are still trying to figure out what started this fire in but they are feeling very proud about the rescues. a family of five needed rescuing from the second floor apartment, which was on fire at 4:30 this morning. firefighters pulled all five to safety. a mother, father and three kids. they got them out through different exits including a window. the father and two of the kids were unconscious. >> hearing people screaming yelling, an emotional scene. so, yeah, there is a dark, heavy smoke conditions, active flame and make rescues the way they did out of three different means of egress,
