eyewitness news reporter kristin thorne live with details. >>reporter: we have learned that inside that home at the time of the shooting were three children ranging in ages from one to six years old. thankfully none of those children was hurt during this. the director of public safety calling this a senseless and tragic shooting. police say a man and woman shot and killed inside that home. no arrests have been made. obviously we're still waiting on many details regarding the story, including what led up to this. the motive behind the shooting. says he was friends with the female victim. >> unbelievable young lady that was striving to be somebody. out of all the chaos and the crime that goes on in newark, it's terrible, it's terrible. >>reporter: that man told me that his friend did have two children. again, from the prosecutor's office, we're hearing that three children were inside the apartment at the time. none of them was hurt and no arrests have been made. we're live in newark this morning, i'm kristin thorne channel 7 eyewitness news. >>

. >> kristin thorne is live with the latest. >>reporter: good morning. police have identified the victim as a 36-year-old man. i spoke with people who live in this apartment building, they know this man and just returned home from the hospital yesterday, perhaps after a medical procedure and he was in a wheelchair. they tell me they could hear him screaming through his apartment because he needed help. these are pictures we received from a woman who lives inside the building. it shows people going down the fire escape. it happened around 2:30 this morning. police tell us the fire started on the third floor. the victim was found in a third- floor apartment in cardiac arrest. the fire was quickly brought under control, but in the meantime, people had to jump from windows and climb down the fire escapes. >> my neighbors jumping out the window, crying. the kids were crying. people was not dressed properly, trying to just get out of the building. it was -- it was really a terrifying experience for all of us in the building. >>reporter: three people suffered m

eyewitness news reporter kristin thorne is live with the good morning. >>reporter: good morning. well, police have identified man. local hospital. i spoke with people who live in that building and they say this man had just returned home from the hospital yesterday, perhaps after having a medical procedure and was in a wheelchair. these are some pictures we received from people who live inside that building. it shows people coming down the fire escape trying to escape the flames. the fire started at 2:30 this morning in the apartment building in the wakefield section of the bronx. police say the fire started in a third-floor apartment which is where they found the victim in cardiac arrest. the fire was brought under control in less than 45 minutes, but in the meantime people jumping from windows, we're told, climbing down fire escapes. people tell me they heard the victim screaming from inside the apartment that he needed help because he couldn't walk. >> my friend james, i saw them bringing him out and he was in bad shape. you know, i cried, i called his he was just -- he was ju

kristin thorne is in hempstead with more. >> security very very tight inside and outside the courthouse today. that's because the family of both the victim, dejah joyner, as well as the shooter, were both here. a fight almost broke out inside the courtroom, and yes, as you mentioned, we learned that all of this may have happened over a hover board. police say 20-year-old jaquan keller was angry that someone had stolen his brother's hover board, so the shooting was in retaliation for that they felt. police say keller is a member of a gang and thought someone from a rival gang had stolen the hover board. obviously 12-year-old dejah joyner was not the intended target. her family is suffering and grieving over that loss. they were in court today as well as keller's family. they were there to defend him. joyner was in her living room in hempstead in october when a bullet came flying through her front window and struck her in the head. prosecutors say keller shot we spoke with dejah's grandmother after court. >> justice is being served. >> we want to thank all those that came together, not on
