i'm steve kroft. in this edition, we look at the multibillion dollar business of international crime. first, we report on the theft of an eye-popping fortune stolen from the iraq treasury. then we take a look at shoplifting gangs from south america. and finally we go undercover in china to expose rampant product counterfeiting. we begin in iraq with the theft that's been called one of the largest of its time, the mother of all heists. and it happened right under the noses of u.s. advisers. as iraqi investigators told us in october of 2006, more than half a billion dollars had disappeared from the defense ministry-- money that was supposed to equip the iraqi military. investigators believe the very people that the united states had entrusted with the funds had stolen them. but it seemed neither the u.s. nor its allies had much of an appetite for pursuing the matter. >> people have died. moneys have gone missing. culprits are running around the world, hiding and scurrying around. i have to ask myself wh

. >> pelley: there will be more on isis and the president's decision to go to war, when steve kroft interviews president obama this sunday on "60 minutes." the world health organization said today that the west africa ebola outbreak has killed more than 3,000 people and infected more than 6,500 so far. the u.s. is sending 3,000 military personnel to build 17 treatment facilities in the weeks ahead, but dr. jon lapook reports there's only a handful there now. >> reporter: the military eventually hopes to provide 1,700 new beds for patients and train up to 500 local health care workers each week. dr. paul farmer co-founded partners in health, an organization that helps build health care systems in developing nations. he was recently in liberia and met with president ellen johnson surly. we're hearing about potentially hundreds of thousands of people being infected. they're maybe going to build 1,700 more treatment beds. there's a disconnect with numbers. how does it get handled? >> yeah, 1,700 treatment beds does not seem like a lot to me when you're talking about a potential need of that scale.

president asked of himself on "60 minutes" since he wasn't getting other interesting questions from steve kroft. the answer isn't quite suitable for him, though, is it? it goes to the point that people still only a third feel they're better off now in most poles, since he took office. i mean, this president basically acknowledged his leadership his not been strong and persistent and powerful enough and positive enough to turn what is, i think, a malaise in this land around. >> well, there's no question that people are glum in terms of views of the economy. right now, those polls are about 55% disapprove of his handling of the economy. 45% approve. when you look at numbers, help me because you're the business expert. lou: yes, i am. >> polls are favorable to the president. if you look at the jobs number. we haven't had unemployment this low in 7 years. housing numbers up 17%. the economic recovery is slow but it's lasting a very long time, and according to all the indicators, it's gaining steam. lou: a couple things on the numbers that you mentioned. great deal of the investment in housing came

steve kroft, the interviewer, really wanted to do it, and when he showed up at my house in berkeley, said, you know, we tried to do you two years ago or three years ago when "blind side" came out, the book i wrote about football and other things. but he said -- you told your publisher you wouldn't talk to us because we'd steal the material and not mention the book. and i think i did. they called the l before. i'd been so used to these news magazine shows appropriating material, and doing -- and helping them do their piece, and then, oops, you got forgotten. they forgot where they got all the material. i thought, this is a ways of time. so i told "60 minutes" no, once so they came back to the publisher, i guess, and said we're sear yes. we just -- serious, and we want to talk to him. so i caved in a moment of weakness i caved. and i thought it was going to be small and trivial piece on books. i didn't know what it would be. they came and spent two days. my wife kept asking, are they leaving soon? the planted. thes in the house honor two days can, and we sat and talked. it was great. h
