and kumar ended up being president obama's top adviser on, i think, much of the middle east at one point in the second term. and in terms of the future for young foreign service officers, it's been difficult because they've watched the way that the trump administration has reduced the size of the foreign service. and the number of applicants for the foreign service exam has fallen from the peak of 20,000 a year to 8,000. so a lot of people, a lot of young people have been discouraged. but i know, happen to know a couple of people, former foreign service officers who teach young people, and i have a friend at johns hopkins, and they say there's still a huge demand for these jobs out there. and i think that the testimony we've seen in the impeachment inquiry is going to increase that demand because young people see that these jobs are really consequential, they're really interesting, and they can really be fun. so i think they, i think we're going to find that there's still going to be a demand. >> you wrote about a very interesting moment represented to this, because the book is really ab

arthel: we'll bring in anita kumar, associate editor at "politico."et's pick up where mark left off. president team is having truncated arguments compared to house managers. will this strategy work in the defense team's favor, and could brevity, a speedily trial lead to a wrap by week's end? >> you heard a lot of republican senators, they wanted the house side would been more efficient. they were looking for shorter arguments. they will still be there several hours laying out the argument both the president didn't do what the house said and it is not a impeachable defense but what you're hearing from senators on both sides they were pretty much where they were before the trial even started. there are only a couple senators we don't really know where they stand. most everyone is exactly where we thought they were about a week ago. arthel: right now, bear with me i have some stats i want to share with everybody. michael steel and maria theresa kumar. >> heidi, we talk about this stuff offcamera all the time. how does nancy pelosi now send over these articles of impeachment without looking like she's surrendered. >> because she's going to say, look at all the things that have happened. and look at all this evidence that's come out. look at john bolton volunteering to receitestify, at the end of day, she has no more reason any more because these vulnerable republicans have all said down the line, they want to start this process, here's the important distinction. this is not 1999. mitch mcconnell is correct that the process did start without an agreement on witnesses in 1999. but in 1999 those witnesses had already provided grabbed jury information. in this case, trump is blocking all of these key witnesses and the documents. the real precedent that they will have to answer for when this is all over will this fit to the precedent of every impeachment trial in our history, which is at the end of the day when the meat grinder pushes everything out, you have witnesses. there were witnesses in t

anita kumar joins us, white house correspondent for politico. tuesday, 1:00 p.m., the trial resumes. what do you predict? do you think the senators and the nation will be hearing from witnesses or not? >> i stopped predicting but i can tell you that the white house and senate leadership are very much in lockstep on this, in that they do not want witnesses and ultimately senate republicans control this, control the trial with the rules, so if the senate majority leader mitch mcconnell doesn't want it i would say it's possible, probable, there will not be witnesses. eric: he talked about making a decision after the opening arguments. do you think anything will change that position? >> well, probably not. but look, we're looking at just a few people. we need the -- the republicans need -- rather, the democrats need just four senators to side with them and say they want witnesses and we heard some of them, susan collins, mitt romney and others saying they're likely to want witnesses. so probably about three have said they do, they just need a fourth

so, no fathers in kashmir, which is an ambitious drama written and directed by ashvin kumar, who wass a british kashmir teenager from birmingham, she goes to meet her grandparents in a country that she‘s never been to before. 0nce she‘s there, she befriends majid, who‘s played by shivan raina, and they both discover that their fathers were friends. she always thought, noor always thought that her father had abandoned the home, but it turns out that both their fathers seem to be part of the disappeared. they are people who have been taken away by the authorities and their fate is unknown. now, the interesting thing about the film is this, it is essentially two separate films intertwined. one of them is a coming of age story, and i think advantage is that stuff really brilliantly. i mean, i love a good coming—of—age movie, and i think this has great performances from the two young leads. the other side of it is a much more advertently political drama, which, for me, works less well because it involves a level of dramatic contrivance that i didn‘t buy into. that said, it‘s made for a ve
