coyotes are spspecies that most people know live in the l.a. area, but people think that they live in the mountains-- ountainousus areas or griffifith park, where there's more open space, but really don't think of them as animals able to adapt to this type of landscape. [car alarm beeps] back to the ranger station. yeah, so, we're in griffith park, and here e is one right here. this park is surrounded by freeway, by urbanization, by some major barriers for wildlife. so, we just saw two, maybe 3 coyotes within this picnic area. so, they know that this resource is here on a regular basis. coyotes are doing pretty well in this urban landscape thanks to their adaptability, but the mountain lions are another story. they really need some help if they're going to have a population here for multiple generations to come. i use camera traps, which are motion-activated cameras that have a sensor in front that's triggered by motion or heat that allows me to document wildlife that is using a particular area. and each photo or each image is time- - and date-stamp

l.a. when you consider this area and you go back to 2008, 11 years ago, we lost close to 500 homes in the sayre fire. the sayre fire was the worst fire in l.a. city history in terms of destruction of property. that's what they're trying to avoid with this fire. already a couple of homes lost and one person. lpga night winds were 60 miles an hour. right now in the overnight hours, hopefulfully they can increase the containment lines which are just above 13%. >> thcertainly. if you can give us an idea of exact wri are where you are and what freeways might be impacted. >> we're very close to the 514 interchange. that freeway heading up to northern california. the 5 north continues to be closed. you have to sort of maneuver your way around it and it is going to be a big pain for anybody trying to get north. for those trying to get south, the 5 freeway south has reopened. my photographer, susan, it's reopened? yes, the 5 south has reopened. if you're coming down to beautiful l.a., we welcome you, the 5 freeway south is open. for those that want to see you, it will be a little tough. >> take car
