welcome to the in-person the second in-person l.a. times awards in a row. 'd like to start the evening with a quote from an l.a. based novelist. last week, the times book section, a list of the 110 essential los angeles books. we began our selection process by sending a survey to hundreds of writers. we were asking about their favorites, but one of our ulterior motives to solicit and publish as many spicy comments on literature as we could. one of my favorites was from steve erickson, whose complex novels don't fit into any neat categories. asked about his favorite literary, he wrote him. literary fiction is a fake category he concocted in new york. there is no l.a. literary fiction, and thank god for that. let the snobs stay on the coast. and that's a debatable point. but it makes some sense when you consider the cities genre fluid canon. how can you call work or octavia butler as a raymond chandler's or charles yu's or caribbean for goes as anything but great fiction? full stop. but since we are about to award winners in 12 separate categories, i would lik
