that's a bit of good news here at laguardia as it opens here.he first flight landing from richmond, a delta flight landing at quarter past 7:00. they expect to be at half capacity. they expect 5,000 to 600 different landings and takeoffs and that's about 5% of what's average on a november day. i tried to push port authority as to when they expect to be back up to normal operating capacity and they say probably a couple of days. they didn't want to put a specific date interest. it's not just about having runways and the airport ready but it's about having the equipment in place. there were only two airplanes that weathered the storm here at laguardia both in hangars. a.j. all of these airplanes need to come back and that one from richmond that delta flight landing about 7:00 this morning was the first one back on the airfield here. >> what do pilots tell you about flying into this airport? >> reporter: well, it's interesting, charlie. we spoke with captain sully sullenberger. he said this is a fascinating airport to fly into. the runways are 7,00

and airlines hope ts y will be able to offer limited service at laguardia tomorrow. in washington, boston, newark, and new york's john f. kennedy, airport operations are returning to normal. flightaware estimates 2,800 flights were canceled today, down from a peak of almost 8,000 on monday. tomorrow, 530 flights have been officially scrapped, but that will grow, if as seems likely, laguardia has trouble opening tomorrow. add it up and airlines took a big hit from sandy. >> you can multiply 18,000 canceled flights by a few tens of thousands of dollars in revenue per flight and you're well north of $100 million in lost revenue. some of it they will be able to recover by flying flightmore full over the next week, but a lot of it is gone. >> reporter: if it rolls on the ground, recovery will take longer.mo amtrak is providing limited service south and north of new york. but it gave no estimate for when flooded tunnels will be cleared and service restored into new york's penn station. darren gersh, "n.b.r.," washington. >> sie: the crippled transportation system is a big

i'm courtney reagan at laguardia airport.ngs look vastly better today than they did yesterday but things are still a little behind schedule after returning to business 49 hours after closed due to the storm. us airways is landing just one flight late today. jetblue not flying at all in or out of laguardia. southwest expects to fly about 50% of a normal schedule. american plans to run close to 100% but their first flight did not depart until noon. delta had the very first flight off the ground this morning shortly after 7:00 a.m. and in 15 flights take off by 9:40 a.m. >> we'll be up to about 70% of our full schedule today, which we started -- we had the flights coming in. we're now ramping back up but we will be at full schedule tomorrow. >> reporter: getting the employees to the airport has been a little difficult for all of the three major airports. delta said it had to get kind of creative. united actually flew in a couple hundred employees from houston to help out here at laguardia today. back to you. >> courtney reagan o

we were here with the first plane landed here at laguardia. two runways here running and operational. delta planes here, american, air tran p so the big players are moving in. us airways hoping they can get up and running tomorrow. it's a truncated schedule today. it's not a full operation. but the hope is, it's a start and it will continue over the coming days. jfk and newark, also of course up and running. let me show you what they had to overcome here at laguardia. take a look at the flooding that we have seen here. this week, because of hurricane sandy, and in some cases water up to the jet bridge, so they had to clean all of that out. they had to make sure electronics, lights, everything were working right there on the runway and then start bringing in the planes. you can't fly people out if you don't have planes to fly them out. so planes have been coming in and slowly but surely getting up to speed. >> and the other side of the island, you've got mobs of people trying to get on to buses. you've got the subways not running, tunnels flood

just in the last hour a 38 miles per hour wind gust at laguardia. still we have some precipitation bands feeding back inland. we have one last batch that's going to roll through in the next couple hours. yes, some of this could be actually a mix of some sleet and some of it could be a mix of snow, and ironically, normally we talk about north and west being a better chance for snow. this time it's north and east, going out 50 for annapolis, northern prince george's county and howard county. much better chance than leesburg. so the morning commute is dry. you will need a jacket and gloves tomorrow. dress for the 40s. that last nor east is going to slowly pull away from the new england coast. overnight, mostly cloudy, windy, cold, winds increasing 15 to 25 and gusty. by morning partly cloudy, windy bed. the winds is going to feel like it's in the 20s and 30s. by afternoon, partly cloudy, windy and chilly. highs in the low 50s. and winds voted the northwest at 15 to 25. occasionally gusty. so next three days, green, green, and green. we can get through

we have activity here at laguardia.ard the terminal. and they're going to get out today. laguardia opened this morning at 7:00 a.m. with two runways operational. but as you know, it has been a mess here today and it's going to be -- it's been a mess over the last few days. and today it's going to be slow going. you'll recall that we had flooded runways, water right up to the jet bridges here at laguardia. and so they had a big cleanup operation. the airlines have to fly planes in before they can fly planes out of here. so like i said, it's going to be slow going. jfk and newark airports, they opened yesterday, but again, with limited service. today those airports remain open and operational and hopefully they'll get up to speed a little bit more today, as well. and as they all ramp up their service, passengers are strongly urged to check with their airlines to find out if, in fact, their plane is leaving today and on time. one big problem across the new york city area has been simply getting the employees to the airport

you can see the flooding mess at laguardia just a couple of days ago. that airport now open with a limited schedule. both jfk and newark which had already opened on a limited basis, are expected to be in full operation by tomorrow. overall, flight cancellations as a result of sandy are now near 21,000. getting around new york is still a huge challenge. this was the scene in brooklyn today. thousands in line waiting to get on a city bus for a ride into manhattan. that line was four people deep. it literally wrapped around the block and most of them would normally be taking the subway into manhattan. but that service is still quite limited. because of the emergency public transportation in the city is free of charge today and tomorrow. >>> the other long lines we're seeing are the ones for gas. >> and just outside new york city, in manacay, new jersey, jim rosenfield is there for how long people are waiting to fuel up. >> reporter: it's a lonely job these days for manager muhammad edris in his station. open for business, but with no juice, it's no go at t

susan candiotti is at new york's laguardia airport. almost always it's a very busy airport. how about today? >> reporter: hi, fred. it's been fraurkbly smooth throughout the day today. we have been here since the early morning and now, and things never really picked up. not bad, considering the fact that this is the busiest travel holiday weekend of the year. now, we can tell you that there are a few handful of delays nationwide. but generally due to good weather. that's probably a key reason why aren't any problems despite the higher volume. one website called flight explorer estimates there are 6,900, 7,000 planes in the air right now. normally around 5,000 on a normal weekend day. but we have seen no lines at check-in, no lines if you can see over my shoulder at this point going through security. joining me is joann leopold. you just threw in from chicago o'hare. what were you expecting? >> we were expecting delays, we got there early, there was absolutely nothing. no lines, everything could not have been easier. >> reporter: how do you figure that? >> i have no idea. i d

susan candiotti joins us from laguardia airport. how is lagaraguardia? bad even on a normal day. >> reporter: i know. it's really been slow and steady, but the two words i can tell you that we saw time and again on the flight display board were these -- on time. martin, it's been perhaps unlike a weekday event on this particular day at laguardia. we have seen virtually no lines as you check in and virtually no lines going through security as well. you can see what it looks like behind me right now. as you said before, smooth sailing. perhaps this is largely due in part to the good weather we've been having throughout the country today. a few handful of delays here and there in certain spots, but nothing of any consequence, for example at jfk airport here in new york, delays of sometimes 30 minutes on the tarmac. well, that's pretty much what it is monday through friday. so, however, the tsa is still advising people that they should always get to the airport at least an hour and a half ahead of time during the heaviest travel times of the year, this being

this is the picture i snapped out of the airplane of my window last night as i was landing at laguardia airport. 6:00 at night, which was really in the thick part of the nor'easter. that's the jet way filled with snow. and it took more than a dozen attempts for that jet way to make it to our airplane because it was blowing so hard in the wind. took 40 minutes to get off the plane because they couldn't get that jet way up to the airplane. i didn't feel the winds this morning. i just saw buckets of snow. >> yeah. and, ashleigh, those winds were blowing between 50 and 60 miles an hour. visibility was greatly reduced. we were looking at some pretty significant delays yesterday. and that northeastern corridor. now the storm system is winding its way just up the eastern seaboard towards new england. its impact there is not going to be as widely felt as it was felt acro across new jersey and new york. take a look at the snowfall totals. in some areas, more than a foot. but generally speaking, jfk, laguardia, also into statin island, generally the snowfall ams were running about three to six in
