host: in the general election, there was one speech, september 30, salt lake city, utah -- was that a turning point for hubert humphrey? did that narrow the race between them? guest: where he declared he is his own man? so, nixon -- sorry, humphrey got support from the afl-cio, and the unions started to organize on his behalf in the general election. that gave him a bump. but then when he declared essentially that he was his own man on the vietnam war, that he was going to support a total stoppage of the bombing of vietnam, and essentially breaking from lyndon johnson, that did help him. i think most historians would agree that in the polls, he began to close the gap. and so, as we discussed earlier, the popular vote, the electoral college vote was a blowout. nixon won it big, 301 votes. but the popular vote was less than 1%. 43.5% for nixon, 42% and change for humphrey. one of the reasons he was able to close that gap was due to that speech, and the sense that he could bring back the eugene mccarthy supporters. the antiwar supporters. veryt kennedy, fascinating. we will never know, o
