unfortunately, winds yesterday were headed directly in the direction of lake tahoe to around south lake. and that's why that fire did expand so much in this particular direction. looking at radar. you can actually see the smoke plume here really starting to kick up during the afternoon yesterday. that's that fresh burn that was happening around kirkwood. there's a lot of granite up here that that fire had to cross before it actually did drop down into myers and it did so successfully as the southwesterly winds did push in that direction. winds will continue today pushing are right in this direction. and unfortunately that's where the fire is growing so much that direction. those southwesterly winds are actually helping us a lot here in the bay area with our air quality. it's pushing smoke away from us. so we've seen some big improvements as far as air quality goes over the past couple of days. and we're starting the day with moderate to good air quality here in the bay as far as temperatures go, as you step out the door this morning do expect some 50's 60's out there alameda in livermor

south lake tahoe remains calm. bit of an inversion that set up shop right over the lake itself that's allowed smoke to just settle into the lake basin of course, we have seen fire spread just to the southwest of south lake itself. this was yesterday. you're a visible satellite imagery of smoke from fires burning across the northern tier the state. all that smoke now being sent to the eastern side of the sierra. so really no new smoke settling here in the bay. and because of that, we're gradually going to continue to see improvements in our air quality. certainly a lot more green than we saw even yesterday. still a couple of yellow areas. but all in all, an easier day to breathe here locally. as for the sierra, we have red flag warnings in effect through 11:00pm tomorrow as winds continue to gust and we remain very dry up there. 60's for your daytime highs in san francisco as well as right along the coastline, temperatures for bayshore cities mostly in the 70's millbrae at 71. we've got foster city, a very beautiful

the flames so close to south lake tahoe. tahoe ski resort and you can see the flames on that live camera. that's just how close this fire is burning south lake tahoe. we are looking at low relative humidity values. about 10 to 20% in that area. westerly to southwesterly areas, gusts up to 30 and you can see that wind flow. the westerly to southwesterly winds pushing the flames even closer to south lake tahoe. this is a big concern. quite alarming to see the flames on the south lake tahoe camera this morning. a red flag warning in effect. today into tomorrow. so, it's until 11:00 p.m. wednesday for the sierra, caldor fire, south lake tahoe, all under that red flag warning due to gusty conditions, low humidity values. for us here in the bay area, here is what you can expect. cleaner here, cooler temperatures because of the stronger on shore breeze. with he will warm it up as we look ahead to the labor day weekend with some smoke possible that could return over the weekend. now for today looking at good to moderate air quality t

we have a lot of images coming in from around lake tahoe. this is pretty near fallen leaf lake a perspective looking towards the south right here. look at the bottom of this imagery. you can actually see some of those homes right there. and if you look a little bit further in the distance. those lights out there that some of the blaze right there. that's it makes its approach a little bit closer to these more populated areas in this gives you just perspective on how close to a lot of these mountain cabins this fire has gotten its obviously resulted in plenty of destruction already. but his approaches south lake tahoe myers fallen leaf lake. we're going to see more and more of areas just becoming more and more threatened because it's a southwesterly wind that is pushing on in to the region. that includes the bay area. but it's that same wind that is resulting in the spread of this fire to the northeast around lake tahoe is actually helping us out temporarily here in the pay, helping to steer smoke out of our direction. one of the reasons we ha

look at this smoke out to the east lake tahoe region. obviously one of those really smoky areas as we do see the caldor fire rapidly expanding to the north and east and that puts so many at risk around south lake areas like fallen leaf lake really particularly close to the blaze now as for air quality, you can see pockets of good pockets of moderate across the bay area. we will be looking at westerly winds sweeping in the same westerly winds, though, have resulted in a red flag warning for not just lake tahoe but the rest of the sierra nevada. this is going to remain in effect through the afternoon today. winds gusting out of the southwest as high as 35 miles per hour. that's fanning the flames in the direction of those populated areas around the south lake and that's why we do have such concern the rapid spread of fires up there today in the sierra nevada. as far as we go back here at home. those winds are really just going to help us out. allowing some ocean cool there to penetrate further into the bay. this is going to keep temperature

this is a live look highway 50 at ski run in south lake tahoe. you can see a long line of cars heading east on the highway. they are trying to get out of the area. as i just mentioned, much of the area is is going to be under evacuation. so residents there if you haven't evacuated or haven't started to evacuate. it's probably a good idea to start getting your things together and head on out. and just a little while ago, state emergency management officials gave an update on the state and federal response to wildfires burning statewide. our capitol bureau reporter ashley zavala joins us live with what's next in the fire fight. ashley. >> yes, in a state leaders made it clear this afternoon that the cal their fire is a top priority as they not only worked to evacuate but also protect a congested and threaten south lake tahoe now, cal fire, chief director tom porter says that fire is really tough for firefighters as they have gained more control on the west side of the fire. but the east side of it is in hard to reach conditions again, the east side

the caldor fire is five or six miles away from south lake tahoe. about 22,000 people are scrambling to leave town. that includes the casinos on the south shore. and hurricane ida trapping people in floodwaters in coastal louisiana shattering the power grid there. let's start with the destruction in the wake of that hurricane. search and rescue efforts continue after this powerful category 4 storm roared across the coast. right now more than a million people are without power. so far, one person is confirmed dead. sadly, that death toll is expected to rise. let's bring in liz mclaughlin who joins us in new orleans. what's happening around you this evening? >> reporter: raj, officials are only beginning to assess the impact of hurricane ida. here in new orleans we've got debris lining the strees. a massive tree behind us in jackson square, a famous part of new orleans, just snapped in half like a twig. and that's just a fraction of the damage that could be seen across the state from this deadly storm. a massive search and rescue operation is under wa

that is south lake tahoe. the mountain ridge can barely even see the mountains behind these traffic cameras here and we i had mentioned the wind is picking up. we have a red flag warning through this area in effect through wednesday night at 11. so these 2 days are really going to tell the story for fire. crews are working to protect thousands of properties in this area. they really are concerned about the winds that they say can really make this firefight and unpredictable one and is why the local fire officials here in the local leaders are really urging residents to heed the warnings and to get out before that wind picks up and before it's too late reporting live in south lake tahoe and bridgette bjorlo bridget curious. so, you know, all those people are fleeing. they can't go west towards sacramento because highway 50 is closed. >> i know there are evacuation center set up near gardnerville and near carson city on the nevada side or is that where they're going or are they going all the way around the lake

let's get a closer look at how close this is to south lake tahoe. it's just seven miles, and it's now descending into the tahoe basin. it's approaching those areas where there are a lot more cabins, places we've all visited frequently and now looking at it moving closer to the south lake tahoe area as we're getting a stronger wind picking up. we've also had some of that smoke coming into the bay area over the weekend with those spare the air alerts that were issued and now we are seeing still some moderate air quality. these little dots here indicate current air quality sensors showing some moderate air quality for the inland areas. it has been improving for san francisco and along the coast. we're dealing with the fires as well as watching what tropical storm ida is doing over the gulf coast. this made landfall yesterday as a category 4 hurricane. pushing up a big storm surge, that's that big wall of water out ahead of the hurricane. now it's dumping lots of heavy rain as it continues to move those heavy rain bands over new orleans into mississippi

lake. of course, it's reached tahoe basin, but the cruise we spoke to about an hour ago who were just came out of that area, said the biggest concern was. it was burning in the middle of upper echo lake and lower echo lake, and it was in that middle ground and with the winds picking up it is moving in that northeast direction into the direction of south lake tahoe. so that's the biggest concern now is we're dealing with. red flag warnings in these extremely dry conditions. all right, stephanie, stay safe, and we'll be checking in later on throughout the afternoon and evening. i want to take a live. look. this is from our tower cameras in the tahoe area and looks pretty clear, actually, given the conditions obviously, it's really hazy, but not nearly as bad as it might be. given hour and could increase and you've got thousands upon thousands trying to get out of the greater tahoe area under evacuation warnings and mandatory evacuation indication. so we'll keep you posted as we go throughout the afternoon, but this is a very dicey situation up up in ta. yeah certainly is and we did just get a

here is south lake tahoe. here is lake tahoe airport on 50. here is myers, christmas valley, here is that new area that we are concerned about east of 50 and 89 where the fire is growing on the hillside as we speak. a closer view of what we are looking at, here is the hillside. half a mile away, this is a very populated area with homes to the east of 50. calfire is working hard now to keep the fire away from this zone, because these winds, the trajectory would continue to force the fire to the north and east. heavenly, a few miles off to the north and east, they have taken their snow guns and turned them onto water to spray heavenly in preparation for the potential that this fire could get close to the ski slopes. this is an area we are watching closely, specifically what we are watching, there is an area, a road called pioneer trail to the east of 50, to the east of lake tahoe airport. you go off of 50 and take pioneer trail, calfire is working this area very extensively and taking bulldozers and trying to create fire breaks. the fire right n

a state of emergency in south lake tahoe. that's our big story this morning as just about every single resident here in south lake tahoe and a lot of these other communities along 50 leading up there. >> have all gone. they packed up left. yeah. and as they moved out the flames started moving in overnight. we've seen the fire grow. >> into places that you're used to stop and a chain up like right high burr's and myers and on the road to kirkwood. we've sierra at tahoe. and that's cam so that the flames coming up towards the resort. but the resort is ok at this point. in fact, if we could just light up this map just a touch here at tahoe is located right about here. there's the resort. yeah. and you can see the fire line. definitely encroached on the resort property itself. and that's why some of the video seen. >> flames and glowing ski lifts and things like that. and like you said, use in the snow blowers. you know that that creates no makers to try and tune in to keep trying to move top some wet. here we have my yesterday, t

this is the reason why 56,000 people had to flee south lake tahoe and the surrounding area. the tahoe basin as flames moved in nearby and people packed up, some leaving sprinkler on hoping they would have something to go back to. in the last hour, firefighter dominic toledo told us the scenic terrain is part of the problem. >> i wish we could say attacking is what we're doing. right now we're following it and trying to protect those that are in the way, move people out of the way. >> reporter: these are images from photographer matthew henderson of the fire in those evacuation areas. today, there could be more people trying to get out as evacuation warnings are now extending into nevada. you may have seen long lines of evacuees stuck in traffic trying to leave and that is a good reminder there is no need to wait for a warning to become an order before getting out. a warning to looters from the mayor of south lake tahoe says there's plenty of law enforcement in the area as well. >> thank you very much, kris. >>> here's a new video of one bay area viewer sent us from outside hi

you active fires still ongoing as it continues to progress to the east and very close to south lake tahoe. when we say it goes into the tahoe basin it's descending into the valley and we're seeing it continue. the red dots are spaced far part because these embers can be pushed out well ahead of the fire and spark new ones. we get the heat from the fire, billows up with all of the smoke and creates this updraft and then away from that we get a down draft where the winds become gusty and erratic and think about something like a tree limb or gets blown away on fire and it could cause these long-range spot fires well ahead of some of those fires. that's the concern here. very dangerous and erratic conditions. the firefighters just have to get out of the way and also get people out of the way because we just don't know how far this is going to spread over the next couple days. marcus. >> thank you. >>> we know the evacuation orders continue to change by the hour so get a detailed map of the impacted neighborhoods, go to nbcbayarea.com. >>> developing in afghanistan, america's longest war is fi

into the south lake tahoe area.o as we talk about it more and more, that's i think most of you have that visual in your head. how that highway runs. how 50 runs because it's really just paralleling that line and so you can. you can feel that part is really going to steer that thing in which way it's going. um the smoke tomorrow stays out of our hair. but then it comes back in some time as we head into tomorrow afternoon or pardon me tuesday afternoon. um which is tomorrow afternoon and then into tuesday evening, and then it wraps back around, but we don't seem to have any big smoke instance coming our way with like we saw last week. it's always possible when you get in a situation where you have you know that much smoke in the bay or in the area, but we should be basically out of the woods with this low pressure center, helping us to direct the smoke away. this is no pressure, though, is single handedly responsible for one of the marine main mechanisms for the red flag warning up there in the mountains for the sprea

the winds are roaring pushing the flames even closer to south lake tahoe. a red flag warning will be in effect later today. good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we're going to speak live with a firefighter in that area in just a moment. >> first let's check in with kari hall. set the scene for us. what are we in store weather wise for us today? they really look at those conditions. >> the wind was kicking up yesterday and that fanned the flames and caused it to spread farther. the red dots indicate where we are seeing active fires burning. according to my estimates some of the leading edges of the fire is only at about 4 miles away from south lake tahoe and you can see that we are seeing this, it's been very erratic because some of the embers kicking up can kick those new fires off about a mile away from some of the very active flames and fires we've seen over the past 24 hours. red flag warning as you mentioned going up. they actually extended it from today at 11:00 to 11:00 tomorrow evening. it does look like

powering possibilities. threat of the cal door fire to south lake tahoe. ple in that area are under evacuation orders tonight as the wind pushes the kaldor fire toward the tahoe basin. for the first time, the mandatory evacuation area includes people in the tahoe basin and amador county. the main medical facility in south lake tahoe barton memorial hospital has evacuated patients to other facilities out of harm's way. many of south lake tahoe is 22,000 residents sat in a long line of cars on highway 50 trying to get to safety. we will again take you to that live news conference from cal fire just as soon as it begins. for more now, right now on the situation up there in the tahoe area, we are joined by captain keith wade, who is assigned to the cal door fire captain weighed the situation there seems to be going from bad to worse. what is the biggest challenge right now facing fire crews? so right now, today it's been the weather, but this fire has proven to us that it's unpredictable and a lot of the issues have been is not just the weather, but the terrain

we've been talking about south lake tahoe, south lake tahoe. as about 6 miles or so down that direction to the east. let's show you how close the fire has been getting why there was concern why they have those evacuation orders in place. if you go about 5 miles this direction to the west. there is now fire on both sides of highway 50 down there. we're going to talk right now is captain keith wade of cal-fire. what we've been talking about this whole time is the winds. we talking show you some video of some of those winds earlier today are some of the fire from earlier today, the winds were really issue and they were concerned with the red flag that it was going to push the fire closer and closer to that south lake tahoe area and some of these communities myers and other communities in the path. how did that go over night. >> so it was a very volatile, very active fire front as it came down off the echo summit into south tahoe basin, christmas valley was ablaze last night. you could see it very well from up above and it was spreading with spot f

all the way into south lake tahoe in to the kirkwood area is standing just south of carson city so thatke continues to roll right from the caliber fire into the tahoe basin and it will continue to do so until the pattern change. now we're going get a little more normally component to wind. i think in the next 24 hours that may help out there a little bit for the bay area. probably means worst air quality for us. and even today we started notice a change a little bit of smoke begin to move back in the bay area. we've got a lot of yellow out there right now as we've got moderate amounts of pollutants around the bay area. the only green spot right over san francisco right now. but here's a live look right now at the incline village looking out over the lake and that is smoke right now. you can see that across they've got plenty more to come those fires continue to burn just to the southwest of lake tahoe unfortunately for them. you've got this wind that's blowing up out of the south and moving that smoke into the tahoe area. so we've seen that today, not as extreme as it's been. but still

let me show you a smoky view from zephyr cove in the lake tahoe area. the fire is really burning so intensely, sending a plume of thick smoke right over tahoe. right now, the air quality is factually -- fluctuating from hazardous all the way to unhealthy in the reno area. still hard to breathe up there. want to sw . the west-southwest wind is going to keep that smoky air right over tahoe with the heaviest smoke there tomorrow night. a switch in the wind direction will begin to push some of that smoke southeastward, but you will notice it is still pretty heavy across the south lake tahoe area. i will be back to show you what are smoke forecast looks like and our air quality in just if units. ama: we will check back with you. the wildfire smoke in your lake tahoe is driving many residents and tourists to flee the area. j.r. stone is in san francisco, where visitors are enjoying the pressure. -- the fresh air. >> it just looked like armageddon. >> this winemaker is describing the smoky conditions he witnessed as he left lake tahoe monday, making the decisio

you can see the actually the worst category now lives across parts of south lake tahoe in the carson city in the incline. really the eastern half of the lake and very poor everywhere else around that lake. and that's not going to get any better as long as the winds continuing. you've got south easterly component to the wind. and that is taking all the smoke from the colder fire right up into tall right now. and that's going to continue for at least another 24 hours and then we'll start to see a bit of a wind switch. now the bay area has been very fortunate. we're get more of a westerly component to our winds. look at the air quality for us. most of the bay area in green, although you see some places in yellow, you get parts of the east bay and little more. but up toward the coastline. of course you get that nice fresh ocean there. but things are going to be changing here in the next 24 hours and that will be good news. you can see the calder fire just to the west of tahoe. all that smoke is being dragged up in that direction toward the tahoe area. the winds not terribly strong right n

the fire is approaching south lake tahoe after the entire south lake tahoe region, which has 22,000 people was evacuated yesterday. you're looking now at a live picture of one of the intense clouds of smoke rising high above the fire. no active orange flame in this picture, but boy. crews are very, very busy on the ground now. you might remember at this time yesterday we brought you live pictures as people were forming a long lines. traffic was jammed people trying to leave south lake tahoe. here we are on the right hand side. you can see the streets are empty. many people sat in traffic for hours there on 50 trying to get out of town once those evacuations were ordered, the el dorado county sheriff has this interactive map that shows the evacuation zone of the caldera fire. all that red. that's the mandate. tory order impacting people who live in that large part of the region, the much smaller slice of yellow there on the left. those people are under evacuation warnings. this fire is burning on echo some in right near meyers. flames are being whipped up by the winds overnight, tightly pac

it is headed toward myers and unfortunately south lake tahoe. rtunity for high fire danger is why we did have the evacuation orders in place. yesterday, people relieving tahoe boulevard was a parking lot. we sat in traffic for more than one hour. people did on of the evacuation warning, which is wonderful. it gives cal fire the opportunity to get resources in and fight this fire. but the terrain and topography has been an ongoing problem because you can't to get in the resources you need to get in because sometimes the elevations are too high. sometimes, that has been the problem with this fire that continues to grow. as the caldor fire continues to bear down on south lake tahoe, these wins are going to be gusty today. they are going to be gusty overnight tonight and also during the day tomorrow. let's not forget, labor day weekend is coming up. that is normally when south lake tahoe -- everyone is here and having a good time. this year's labor day, it is going to be one we will all soon forget. that is a look at what is happening here. reggie: w
