but we should also mention las vegas felt it, and las vegas may have felt it even stronger. why? because of where this particular earthquake was centered. ridge crest is actually closer to las vegas than it is to, for example, los angeles. so wherever this is epicentered that is where you're going to feel the strongest and have the most potential for damage and injuries. i do want to mention this to folks who are in the southern western part of the country. do not call 911 unless you have been injured or there are injuries you can see. because what happens is those phone lines get filled with people saying we felt this earthquake, we want to know what's going on, that is not the venue for that. the los angeles police department are asking people unless there's injuries and an emergency please do not call us. there's ways to get information online. but when those phone lines get jammed and there is an naerjs, there are fires, for example, people injured, there are damages people are concerned about, they cannot get the help they need as soon as they need it. so that's one warning

what we know is pretty much between las vegas and bakersfie bakersfield.close to death valley national park. now again, as mentioned, 150 miles away. the most important thing is even though originally it was 6.6, typically they all drop a little bit. 6.4 is still significant. anything above 6.0 will do some the most important factor, though, is just how deep. 8 kilometers so you're talking a little over 10 miles deep. that's significant enough to absorb most of the shock and energy. however, a lot of it depends on the soil in this region. of course in southern california the wave action does pretty much provigate outwards. what we're going to find now are after shocks. there's another website called emsp like usgs they reported since 5 after 10:00 there have been three smaller after shocks. now, that's typical. if we have something that shakes a little bit shocker that's a 6.4 that'll be considered tquak. in the last few weeks there's been a lot of interest in kind of swarm of smaller tremors that have been happening in california, and it's kind of sparked

this is like huge. >> this video comes from las vegas about 250 miles east of where the earthquake struck. by the way, one of our employees felt a tiny shake right here in our studios in san jose. what was it specifically that made this earthquake be felt so far away? rob is here to give us a few more details about that. >> it's remarkable when you think how far the area that was involved here. we have a map that shows while the quake itself occurred far away from the san andreas fault, it was two smaller faults along the airport lake fault zone. the magnitude is a 6.4 earthquake that released a tremendous amount of energy where you can see the strongest shaking at ridgecrest and 150 to 200 miles all the way from san diego into the bay are where as you mentioned, size mow graphs registered into the north bay as well. a quake of this size being felt across four states. utah, arizona, nevada, and california. it has to do with the magnitude. a 6.4 carries 125 times the amount of 0 as a 5.0, more of a regional impact. total's quake as more aftershocks continuing, generally 5.0 and lower. >> h

so just listening to the experience in las vegas, it could not be more different here. i was raised in california. i've never felt anything like that. i was trying to explain earlier kind of overestimate how scary it was. and to be in a closed space, to see your room kind of literally on hinges going back and forth. there wasn't a good way to move to stay safe. i kind of froze in my bed. i was sound asleep and weaken by this violent shaking. we heard in that press conference there was a smaller shake right before. i did not feel that. i clearly slept through that. this 7.1 was truly scary. got out of bed. the alarms started going on almost immediately. can you show our hotel is right over there. everything is dark. everything is out of power. you can't -- you see a sea of darkness. there are a lot of buildings usually lit up. where we are we're in front of the ridgecrest regional hospital. there are generators. it is running on emergency power. we've been seeing ambulances coming in and out. there are helicopters overhead. sirens, police, emergency services out on the s
