we saw there will former first lady laura bush.s there to mark this occasion. >> reporter: absolutely, tamron. good afternoon to you. president obama also joined by first lady michelle obama for the ground breaking of the museum. this is the 19th museum that will be a part of the smithsonian institution and as you said, it will highlight all aspects of african-american life, art, history, music culture and take visitors from the period of slavery through reconstruction, the civil rights movement all the way up through present day. curators estimate they will already have about 15 to 20,000 artifacts on hand. some of those artifacts, a shackle that was worn by a slave. another one is a jim crow era railroad car that was segregated. those are just a few of the artifacts. you played that sound bite from the president obama. former first lady laura bush also spoke at that is ground breaking ceremony today. here's a little bit of what she had to say. take a listen. >> the stories of suffering and perseverance, of daring, of imagination,

former first lady laura bush will be joining president obama along with several other dignitaries and musical guests as well. it has been 10 years since this museum was approved by an act of congress and soon we're going to start to see this five acre museum rise just across constitution avenue here on the national mall. construction is expected to take about three years with the museum opening to the public in 2015. artifacts are already being collected from donations from the public. they are already some of them at the american history museum. they will tell the stories that are sometimes overlooked in other museums. there will be areas that are there for quiet reflection. the museum will be the 19th in the known institution and is expected to be last on the national mall. coming up in just about a half hour, we'll tell you more about the ceremony. who is going to be there and where you are going to be able to see it live. we will be speaking live with the associate director of the museum. that is coming up in just about a half hour. >> an exciting event indeed. thank you. >> a loo

first lady laura bush helped with the groundbreaking. tara mergener has more. reporter: celebrities and dignitaries including president obama gathered inside a tent on the national mall to mark the start of construction on the smith sonnian's newest edition, the national museum of african- american history and culture. >> this is a milestone moment not only for the smithsonian, but for the united states. reporter: lonnie bunch is the museum's director. >> it really has been an opportunity to make sure that my ancestors and all our ancestors are remembered. reporter: the new museum is slated to open on the national mall in 2015, but it already has a staff raising money and collecting artifacts. smithsonian officials say they already have more than 15,000 items on hand that will be part of the african-american museum's collection. they're working to find more material on popular culture, music and military history. they're hoping this kickoff will also help jump start fundraising. congress pledged $250 million for the museum which will cover about half the cost o

this is the tent where they're going to have president obama, former first lady laura bush and all theig tenitaries will be e tomorrow morning. it's right in the shadow of the washington monument. but, boy, oh, boy, when this thing is done, it is going to be something to see. thanks to the designer, this wonderful guy, david oji is this wonderful architect. he's a rock star architect. born in tanzania. he was the son of a diplomat. traveled all over the world. was educated in london. he is such a rock star. they call him a starchitect. he took the roots and his inspiration from a tribe in west africa. most of the slaves that came to this country hundreds of years ago came from this tribe. they say all the african-americans are descend t descendants of this tribe. he's basing this amazing building on the tribe's sculptures of the late 19th century. it's going to be a work of art here in washington. it's going to be the first green building that the smithsonian has built. it will be the groundbreaking tomorrow. it will open in 2015. watch this thing rise. back to you. >> thanks, wendy. >

[applause] >> thank you, all. thank you everybody. thank you very much.ery much. thank you for that introduction and good morning to everyone. good morning president and mrs. obama. director lonnie bunch and all of our distinguished guests and everyone who joined for this important location. it is especially fitting that we are dedicating this plot of land on our national mall for a museum that remembers reveres and celebrates the great struggles and even greater contributions that african- americans have made to our nation's history. just down the road from here, both the white house and the capital were built in part by the labor of african american slaves. we do not know most of their names, but they left a lasting legacy in the bricks and stones and beautiful craftsmanship that now houses our democracy's most of vital institutions. hear too in this city is where a young congressman named abraham lincoln was horrified by the sight of a slave pens standing near the grounds of the capital. a year later president lincoln would sign the transforming emanci
