laura garcia is off. we want to get right to bob redell live on highway 101. bob, are you getting a sense yet of how many cars are involved and how this all happened? >> reporter: yes, we are. good morning to you, kris and marcus. we're on northbound highway 101, which is shut down in both directions between the lawrence expressway and fair oaks avenue. we know there are at least four vehicles in the northbound direction that were involved in this collision and two more on the southbound. this happened around 12:30 this morning. we know three people were killed and there are a number of chp officers on the scene collecting evidence. you can also see the people in the orange, those are caltrans workers trying to assess the damage. what happened, we know one vehicle hit the center divide and we believe what happened is debris from that center divide, the concrete went into the southbound direction, causing cars on that side to collide. then there was a chain reaction on the northbound side. we know there are at least six vehicles involved. it's hard to tell with

i'm laura garcia. we're going to check in with kari, but mike has been tracking breaking news that has been certainly affecting the roadways as well this morning. >> it has. 87 gets crowded coming into downtown. there's a police investigation that continues there. let's take you to the maps and talk about the slower drive you're going to see and the changes that happened in the last few seconds. bob redell is out there gathering information and he says that he had to move his crew. that's why north 87 may see some improvement. right now we're seeing a lot of backup, a lot of slowing. willow street is where the investigation was blocking your slow lane. i believe they're just reopening it now. but the crew and the approach, there may have been another incident that's happened on the approach, right after the curtner slowdown. so that whole section typically sees a build right about now. we're expecting more traffic to come in and the shift might happen to north 101. if that ripples over, that will affec

laura garcia is off. to get right to bob redell on the freeway there, more investigators are still there. bob, are you getting a sense of how many cars were involved and how this all started? >> reporter: we do. good morning to you, kris and marcus. we're on northbound highway 101, which is shut down in both directions between the lawrence expressway and fair oaks avenue, and now that the sun is up, we've counted six cars involved in this deadly collision on the northbound side, and then a seventh car, at least one car, on the southbound side, so that comes to seven cars. sadly, three people were killed when this happened around 12:30 this morning. as far as the time for reopening, we expect this to be within the next hour, maybe hour and a half. there are wreckers out here that are getting in position to remove the cars, which means chp is wrapping up their investigation. as i mentioned, this happened around 12:30 this morning. what we believe happened is that one vehicle hit the center divide and sent c

. >> i'm laura garcia. just got to make it over the hill. it's been a soggy one this week. >> yes, but i'm happy my garden is getting some water. we're going to see more rain as we go into today. the storm system really hasn't budged too much from yesterday and it's been off and on, so there are some breaks in between. but we are seeing it really picking up for the south bay and now getting ready to move into the east bay, as we see some of the darker colors, the darker greens and yellows as well, that's been mainly over the south bay. and we've had some pretty decent rainfall totals here, a closer look shows rain that's been covering up and down the peninsula, with lighter showers moving into the north bay and also some light rain from san francisco and extending over toward the bay into antioch. so more rain in the forecast, at least for the next few hours, and then mostly cloudy with another chilly day ahead. we'll talk more about that and what to expect coming up. >>> you're seeing slowing in the south bay, mike. >> yeah, because the tim

i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. mike has a look at that commute. first, we've got to talk about that rain. it is here, a rainy start. >> it's going to be off and on, not only this morning, throughout today as well, and maybe even a few thunderstorms. so let's get a look at the system that is spinning right over the bay area, zooming out so that you can see the motion of this storm, and it's going to be with us for quite a while. a closer look shows the showers that are moving near the coastline into the inland east bay, and the north bay not seeing as much wet weather, but throughout much of the east bay from fremont just north of san jose, all the way over to about dublin, pleasanton, and we're also seeing those spotty showers continue for the san ramon area, moving toward concord and antioch. so the rain is rolling on through and will be with us throughout today. here we are at 3:00, still seeing spotty showers, that will be dropping rain and potentially thunderstorms, especially this afternoon. we'll also see the cool weather continue, and you j

i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. mike is keeping his eyes on the road. first, we've got to talk about the forecast coming off of a nice weekend. >> yeah, but it changed drastically between saturday and sunday and we're going to continue sunday's weather today, and we're also looking at cooler temperatures. i think some people were excited to see the cooler weather coming back, and we are seeing clouds and a little bit of drizzle as you're driving around parts of the bay area. it's going to stay mostly cloudy, temperatures right now in the low 50s, and as we go through the rest of the morning we're going to stay in the 50s today, with some gusty winds. only reaching 60 in san jose, now some of us will not make it out of the 50s this afternoon, with hayward reaching 59 degrees and napa reaching 62, in santa rosa we'll see a high of 66 degrees. more weather like this and we'll add in some rain. we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. >>> mike, you're tracking an alert in san jose. >> i've been tracking it

. >> i'm laura garcia. usually i can read your mind. yeah, we're all getting started on this monday morning coming off a nice weekend, warmer. >> it was warm, definitely. so we're going to have another day of a little bit of a break during the morning and then it warms up in the afternoon. we're taking a look at our current temperatures that are right now in the upper 50s as many of us are heading out the door. low 50s for martinez and napa. as we go into today, inland spots like walnut creek will go from upper 50s to low 70s, eventually reaching into the mid to upper 70s. once the breeze picks up this evening, temperatures drop quickly. take a look at our highs, novato reaching 77, about the same in hayward and 83 in san jose. we'll talk about warmer temperatures ahead. >>> mike has a look at the progress in san jose. >> i think we actually have a freeze frame. this is a great freeze frame as they're righting the rig. the second tow truck arrived and they have even distribution and they could lift the trailer and rig at the same time.

i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington.horts and sandals out, because things are heating up across the bay area. we want to give you a live look at san jose, where we're expected to reach some hot temperatures this weekend, and all of the colder than normal weather we're seeing finally ready to give way. >> meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect. some places expected to reach 80s, 90s. >> we're going to see that in the inland valleys, but still a wide range in temperatures. coastal areas, san francisco is going to stay nice and mild. let's head to antioch where it's breezy, temperatures in the mid-50s. it's also clear. as we go throughout the morning, we can see the trend heading up ward going to mid-70s at 1:00, eventually into the low 80s today. not quite uncomfortable yet, but we are starting that warming trend for later today. temperatures ranging anywhere from 64 in half moon bay to 86 in fairfield. we can see it jumping up another 10 degrees tomorrow, and it's going to be hot in the valleys, but once a

i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. >>> that other top story for you, san francisco leaders, they are taking the debate about drug sales and drug use to the streets. >> in a very rare move, the mayor and supervisor are holding their monthly question and answer session at united nations plaza. one of the flass where people trade and take drugs in and out right there in the open. nbc bay area's kris sanchez joins us now with a look at this conversation. should be interesting, kris. >> in about three hours is when this is happening. the san francisco board of supervisors will take their meeting outside the chambers right there in front of city hall in the plaza. that's really become symbolic of san francisco's drug problem. the images are shocking to people who live in the city, shocking to people who visit the city, and so are the statistics. 200 people died of drug overdoses in san francisco in the first three months of this year, the vast majority of them related to fentanyl. that is 41% more than in the same period last year. supervisor aaron peskin, who spearheaded the boar

i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington.deo showing the elevated reaction from oakland teachers on the picket lines at one site. nbc bay area's bob redell is joining us live from west oakland this midday, and we can see some type of confrontation there between the teachers and someone in the truck. what was going on there? >> well, good morning, marcus and laura. the striking oakland teachers, some of them what they've done is effectively shut down this side in what's oakland behind me and it is run by construction workers are also part of a separate union. this morning the striking teachers, they began picketing this construction site. this site is the site that drew a $57 million building and the teachers argue that that money, that 57 million should be going to fixing the classrooms instead and that's why they're out here and that's part of the protest. the teachers blocked the construction workers who work on this site. a construction worker drove his pickup truck through the side entrance and the front gate there and he

i'm laura garcia. marcus washington is off. >>> the city of oakland is trying to reassure people who live there they are protected after a string of violent robberies in recent weeks. nbc bay area's bob redell joins us live. the city and police just spoke. what did they have to say? we just heard from the mayor. >> we did. the oakland mayor sheng thao reiterated the need for more money for the department of children, youth, and families to deter kids from going into a life of crime to begin with. during the press conference, the acting police chief said two weeks ago there were 100 robberies within a one-week time period in the city of oakland, 50 of which took place within 72 hours, some involved shootings and carjackings. then last monday, the 15th, he says he reprioritized his command staff and officers to target those criminals. then on that same day, he says they arrested three adults and two juveniles connected to at least ten armed robberies. then the past sunday, as we've been reporting this mo

. >> i'm laura garcia. first, there could be a break in a cold case from 27 years ago. 42-year-old ylva hagner went missing in belmont back in 1996, and now police are searching two areas in redwood city in relation to that investigation. nbc bay area's emma goss is live in redwood city with new details from police. emma, what's the latest? >> reporter: well, belmont police have taped off two areas of farm hill boulevard, and this residence behind me is one of them. you can see not only police tape but an fbi vehicle is parked out front. and we've seen people, investigators out in the backyard and also saw shovels being carried toward there to be used for digging. there's also police down the road at the park. it's closed off for the time being. police said the investigation into ylva hagner's disappearance has been refocused and led them here today, working with the san mateo county d.a.'s office and the fbi. >> her whereabouts are still unknown, so that's part of everything we're out here doing today is t

. >> i'm laura garcia. three oakland unified school district directors just wrapped up a news conference to talk about contract negotiations with the teachers strike. in less than an hour, oakland unified will hold its own briefing to address the ongoing demonstration. >> nbc bay area's bob redell live for us from oakland high. what have you learned about yesterday's bargaining session? and what are they talk about today? >> reporter: good morning, marcus and laura. a person familiar with the negotiations tells me that the district presented the union with a counterproposal yesterday on sunday, and then last night at 10:30, the union presented their counter to that. they walked the district through their counter until 2:00 this morning. and right now the union is waiting for the district to come back to them. you can see there are a few teachers out here for day three of the oakland teachers strike outside oakland high. a number just left for a rally taking place downtown later this afternoon. this person t

i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. that breaking news m unfolding in salinas. want to give you a live look at the scene as you can see right here. this is where a monterey county sheriff's deputy has been shot serving an eviction notice. there is a shelter in place. this is the area of sun and east market streets, if you know that area. you can see right there a large police presence there. and they have been shut down. that area and that situation has been unfolding and we have been following this throughout the morning. the mayor of salinas confirms the deputy was shot multiple times inside a residence. law enforcement responded to reports of gunshots. that suspect currently still barricaded inside of a home. >> that person is going to be okay. i can't get into the particulars. as soon as we can get information out to you guys, we will let you know. we're all anxious and we want to know what's going on. >> i'm not sure if you could hear that, but she said that the deputy is expected to be okay. >> we hope to have a live report from that area in just a bit. >>
