i am laura garcia. >> i am marcus washington. >>> we want to get to our top story today. today's big warm-up. what can we expect today, kari? >> starting out nice and cool around the bay area, but we will see temperatures that warming up over the next few hours. the heat advisory begins at 11:00 this morning, and some of the areas were under the heat advisory yesterday. this goes until 11:00 p.m., and our inland areas are headed for the upper 80s and low 90s. watch out for the potential for setting new records today, with santa rosa expected to hit 95 degrees today, and that's the record high set back just a couple years ago, or just last year. in san francisco, we're expecting to reach 90 degrees today. that would break a record that was set in 1913. in oakland as well as livermore, san josÉ will reach in the low 90s which would be a new record high temperature. let's get a look at all of our microclimates and what to expect with temperatures hitting 99 in gilroy today. hot temperatures in the south county, and antioch reaching 97 degrees, and 92 in oakland and 92 in san

i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington.k at the forecast because it has been a hot one out there. meteorologist kari hall has more hot news for us. >> we set a record yesterday in half moon bay, reaching 90 degrees during the middle of the afternoon, when our old record was just 82 degrees. so it did heat up even along the coastline and it's going to be another hot day today. a heat advisory going into effect starting again at 11:00 this morning, and continuing through tomorrow evening. we're looking at temperatures in the upper 80s to near 100 degrees. make sure you're reducing outdoor activity, drinking more water and there's an increased risk of heat related illness. looking at the commute, we are going to see temperatures in the east bay in the mid-60s. it does ramp up quickly, going into the mid-80s at noon and eventually reaching back into the low to mid-90s for much of the bay area. >>> mike, you have more info on the crash near vasco road. >> it involves a deer, and we know this time of year we do hear about deer cr

i am laura garcia. >> i am marcus washington. we are tracking the hot weather out there, and it could eventually -- well, kari, is this a heat wave or not? >> yeah, a heat wave is how long it lasts and above average temperatures for two or more days, that's a heat wave. we are seeing that. as we head into the next couple of days, it will heat up in the afternoons and the mornings are nice and mild and that's when we get a break out there. san josÉ starting out in the upper 70s at 10:00. we're already starting to warm up by late morning. then as we go through the day, look at that, we will be in the mid-90s, reaching 95 degrees this afternoon. a lot of mid-50s year across the bay area, and even heating up in san francisco. much of the peninsula in the 90s today. this is not even the peak of the heat. it gets hotter for tomorrow, especially with san martin hitting 100 degrees, and upper 90s in concord, fairfield and 99 in los gatos. we will talk more about the impacts in a couple minutes. >>> mike, you already have some impacts in

i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. let's get to that breaking news that we're covering for you this morning. hurricane otis now making landfall in mexico. we have some live video we want to show you along the acapulco coast where the storm made a direct hit overnight. yesterday at this time, otis was just a tropical storm when it made landfall. it packed winds of up to 165 miles per hour. now we're told it's losing some steam as it moves north. >> we want to bring in meteorologist kari hall. it seems to pretty much come out of nowhere. >> it did strengthen quickly from a tropical storm to a category 5, in a period of less than a day, over about 12 hours. now we can see, with that live shot, that things are basically returning to normal there for some of the vacationers. but this is going to be anything but a vacation for people who are dealing with some very catastrophic rainfall, even the size has shrunk quite a bit as this is now a category 2 hurricane. still packing wind speeds of 110 miles per hour. but it's also m

i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we want to get right to the breaking news, the out-of-control wildfire burning right now in southern california. reporter macy jenkins is with our l.a. sister station on the ground near the fire lines. >> 2,200 acres burned and zero percent contained. take a look behind me. this is what we are seeing. we saw firefighters pull up to this property just behind us just about ten minutes ago. the flames burning in certain spots just behind the trees, and then, of course, right up on the mountaintop. when we were here last night, we could see fire glowing in multiple places. some of that fire still going in hot spots. i'll have you walk with me this way. you can see firefighters from cal fire, riverside county and other agencies working together to try to figure out the best plan in getting this thing put out. the fire started yesterday, about 12:40 p.m., and firefighters are still trying to figure out how it began. now, at one point the fire was being fueled by santa ana winds. those winds

i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we want to get to our breaking news in contra costa county. a big rig driver dead, after a crash at the richmond-san rafael bridge. >> bob redell is live at the toll plaza this morning. this could have a big impact, i would imagine, on the morning commute. >> reporter: it isn't right now, but it could as we get further into the morning commute. right now only the left lanes are open. there are seven lanes, four are shut down. chp just told me they hope to have another lane reopened within the hour. you can see what the issue is. right now there's a wrecker out here, and they're trying to remove the big rig. the big rig appears to have been pulling a haul, a gravel haul, that's the white vehicle. they're trying to remove that. this is the truck that crashed into the toll plaza last night. they still need to repair the toll booth. that is what caught fire and was destroyed in this crash, unfortunately, with the vehicle. the crash happened around 10:00 last night. it was a solo vehicle c

i'm laura garcia. we're experiencing a heat wave in october. kari has a look at those temperatures. >> at least we do have a cool start, and this morning we are going to see temperatures going from upper 50s and low 60s, to the 80s and 90s. let's get a look at walnut creek and what to expect today. it's going to be nice and sunny, and 60 degrees for the morning. if you do have some outdoor activities, it may be a little taxing if you're doing it in the heat of the day. try to get it done early. we're at 81 degrees at lunchtime and reaching the upper 80s by the middle of the day, and when we take a look at where we're headed and what's average for this time of year, santa rosa usually hits a high of 80 degrees today. we're expecting it to reach 91. also, 91 in concord, a lot of these numbers are at least 10 or 11 degrees hotter than what we usually see. this is not even going to be the hottest day of the week. we're seeing temperatures ramp up today, headed for 88 degrees in san jose, and oakland today reaching 87 degrees, even warm in san franc

i'm laura garcia. we're going to get to the top stories in just a moment. the forecast this morning. >>> before we get to this, we want to get to this breaking news, where firefighters are battling an out-of-control wildfire near temecula and riverside county. at least one home is destroyed and evacuation orders are in effect for several neighborhoods. wind whipping flames have burned more than 1,200 acres and the area is under a red flag warning with gusty winds and low humidity. meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring the fire zone. talk to us about the kind of conditions firefighters are dealing with this morning. >> they are dealing with a red flag warning. they've had some really gusty winds in that area. we are still seeing red flag warning conditions farther to the north. that means the gusts could reach 30 to 50 miles per hour, and humidity at 5% to 10%. you can see the location of the fire is not included in that red flag warning. it's much farther to the south. we have seen some gusty winds that do continue as we're seeing that fire spread rap

. >> i'm laura garcia. let's get right to that breaking news that we're covering in contra costa county, a big rig driver dead, after a crash at the richmond-san rafael bridge. >> we have team coverage this morning, starting with "today in the bay"'s bob redell. he's live there at the toll plaza. bob, what kind of impact are we talking about here traffic-wise? >> reporter: now that we're in the 6:00 hour, we're definitely starting to see some slowing here at the richmond-san rafael bridge. this is the westbound direction of 580 at the toll plaza. only three lanes are open right now. the other four lanes are closed because workers are trying to remove that gravel hauler behind that semi. you can see the wreckers there. that's the hauler that crashed overnight into one of the toll booths. they're trying to remove that. until that's removed, those four lanes will be shut down. you are going to have the slowing at the toll plaza. the crash happened around 10:00 last night. it was a solo vehicle. only involved t

i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we'll get to the headlines in just a moment. we've got to start out with the forecast. meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring that. the rain is gone for now? >> the rain is gone for a little while and we're heading for cooler temperatures. as we get a look at our visibility, that's the main issue, especially for the north bay, where we are seeing dense fog developing, especially around novato where visibility is down to about a quarter of a mile. so make sure you're allowing extra time to get to work this morning. as we take a look at santa rosa, it is 50 degrees and foggy there, as we are seeing, once again, the low visibility, starting out with cool temperatures. we're in the low 50s now, but it's going to clear up and shape up to be a really nice day. a little warmer in some spots compared to yesterday afternoon. we'll talk about a cooldown coming our way in just a few minutes. >>> mike, you've had a couple of hazards reported. >> we're looking at a pretty smooth drive right now. fog, of course, that's not the hazard we'

. >> i'm laura garcia. we'll check the morning commute with mike and see if things are picking up. what about the temperatures? let's check in with kari and see what we should wear. >> it's going to be cool to start but then warm up and be a comfortable afternoon. we have a range in temperatures that will change as we go from morning to day. walnut creek starts out at 53 degrees. you'll want a jacket for at least the next few hours. then once that sun comes out, temperatures start to warm up and we'll be in the upper 60s throughout much of the morning, headed for the mid to upper 70s. here is a look at our highs, reaching 71 in san francisco, 73 in oakland and 78 in martinez. morgan hill today up to 80 degrees, and 77 in novato. then for tomorrow, temperatures take a tumble and it's going to feel like fall, especially in the early morning hours as we get more clouds and a few of us will get some rain. it looks like mainly the north bay will have the best chance. then we continue with cool weather for the rest of the week with 60s in the forecast. that's for our afternoon highs. i'l

. >> i'm laura garcia. a lot to cover this morning. first to our breaking news, hurricane otis has now made landfall in mexico. we have live video along the acapulco coastline where the storm made a direct hit overnight. yesterday at this time, otis was a tropical storm. since then, it turned into the highest level of hurricane, with winds of up to 165 miles per hour. >> in the hours leading up to the landfall, authorities in mexico were warning people along the coast about the imminent danger, telling them to hunker down and find some shelter. we want to bring in meteorologist kari hall, who has been following all of this. this seems to come out of nowhere. >> with it intensifying so rapidly, they didn't have a chance to evacuate. we continue to see this affecting a large part of the western coast of mexico as it continues to move in. it is weakening very quickly and it is now a category 2 hurricane, so the good thing is that it is continuing to weaken. but it has already caused catastrophic damage, as we typically see with a category

laura garcia is off this afternoon. but just about an hour ago, a 4.1 magnitude earthquake struck in sacramento county, and the epicenter was about 40 miles from walnut creek. >> let's bring in meteorologist kari hall to talk about where this happened. is that on the fault line? >> it is not on a major active fault line, but it is in the delta. and when we have earthquakes that happen deep in the earth, sometimes it is felt a little bit farther. but we know that for a lot of people in the east bay did feel a little bit of shaking for a while, but it is isolated in terms of who felt it around the delta. we have to keep in mind that we have 500-plus active faults state wooud, and there is a pretty high chance that we could see a 7.0 within the next 30 years. so, that's why we even pay attention to the smaller earthquakes because it could be a larger one, and most of the bay area is within ten miles of a fault. anytime we get minor shaking, drop, cover, and hold and make sure that, if you can, get under some sturdy furnitu
