laura garcia. here is a look at today's top stories including momentum on the jobs front. >>> i'm scott mcgrew.s about the american economy, the august jobs report showing 1.37 million americans either found a new job or went back to their old job. it drops the unemployment rate down to 8.4%. normally we would think of that as a very big number. we're in the middle of a pandemic. this is excellent and better than expected numbers and really good news about the economy. >> reporter: i'm roz plater in san jose. there is a flex alert already in place for the holiday weekend where the temperatures are expected to be a scorcher, 10 to 20 degrees higher than normal. so you're being asked to conserve power to avoid rolling outages. now here are a couple things you can do. you can set your thermostat to 78 degrees, avoid using any unnecessary lights or electrical devices, close your drapes and your blinds, use a fan if possible, and avoid using your major appliances until off peak hours. >>> and that's all because it's going to be very hot this labor day weekend. vianey is in for kari this morning. how

scott. something everyone is still talk about this morning. the air quality. i want you to check out all of these live shots. this is across the bay area. lauraen looking all morning. >> that's right. we're finally in the sunrise. we have been waiting and it looks a little more gray to start our day compared to yesterday. our entire nbc bay area team posting on social media probably like you, as well. filled everyone's social mediaardy about those ominous and eerie skiz. as we have been mentioning, today marks the 24th day in a row for a spare the air alert. during a pandemic, kari, it seems like my one little relief is being able to go outside and you're kind of hesitant with the air quality out there. >> absolutely. we went outside for a couple of minutes yesterday. i was thinking, okay, well, the sensors aren't looking too bad. but we stepped outside and there was ash falling and i just grabbed the kids really quickly and we went back in. that's what we're seeing still today with all of this smoke. this showed the upper levels of the atmosphere over the past 24 hours and just hasn't moved. this is also being transported in the upper levels

scott mcgrew. marcus and laura have the day off but kari doesn't.r conditioning just clicked off for the first time in several hours. i think it's finally a bit comfortable in the house, at 6:30 in the morning. >>> right. give it a couple minutes, it'll be back on. we're starting out with some warm weather this morning and also we have our unhealthy air quality that continues today. and so we're going to see at times the drifts of smoke coming in especially in the east bay as well as santa clara valley. it's going to be another hot day. we're looking at our highs over 100 degrees for many of our microclimates. as we reach up to 112 today in ukiah, even san francisco will be hot with highs reaching into the upper 80s again today. as we get out on the roads, i'm covering that as well. as we look at our overall flow across the bay area, haven't seen any major issues over the past few minutes, looking good for our bridges and our south bay drive times if you're about to head out the door, maybe hold back a few minutes. we have a smooth commute. you can
