ed lavandera, you're reporter on the ground there. ed, we talked to you on the phone as you were getting to the scene. what does it look like now? is it significantly calmer? >> well, interesting situation now. because the officers have moved north along the street that has been of greatest concern. now essentially been blocked behind the line that authorities have set up along the road here. we are being told by officers that there are reports of more gunfire, there are reports of fire in a market just up the road. they have a line set up and then they have officers that are patrolling to the neighborhoods trying to confirm these reports as well. so it's an extremely tense situation. our vantage point at this point is not as good as it used to be. but it's definitely a situation where beyond police lines you can hear it's still extremely tense, you can hear officers speaking on the bull horns, if you will, from the patrol cars. you can see the helicopter with the flood lights lined over the neighborhoods. and you can see the patrol c

our correspondents ed lavandera is on the ground at ferguson. let's begin with ed. what are you learning today about the police officer who has now been named, darren wilson? >> darren wilson, but you know the police department, even though they released the video images of michael brown involved in what they say was a strong-arm robbery yesterday, many people still angry about the fact of the picture of darren wilson, the 28-year-old officer involved in this shooting was not released. so they describe him, the police department here in ferguson, as a six-year veteran, as a police officer, four of those years spent with the ferguson police department. he's described as quiet and distinguished. we had a chance to speak with a friend of his, someone who's known darren wilson since high school. a man by the name of jake shepherd. they went to high school together, played on the same hockey team. he said he was stunned when he heard that police had announced that his friend was involved in the shooting. in fact he says that he thought there must have been another darren

let's go to ed lavandera who was watching that as he was standing there. ed, what did you make of what captain johnson said? how is his statement likely to be received there in the morning? >> reporter: well, you know, it's interesting. clearly captain johnson anticipating what perhaps some of the criticism will be of the police force and the police tactics here tonight, but clearly captain johnson making the point that the police force on the street tonight simply had no choice and that they had to, quote, elevate their tactics and their response to the situation, given how quickly it was deteriorating. captain johnson is fully aware and has heard directly for the last three or four days from the people who have been very angry about the way the police initially responded earlier last week, and captain johnson who has gone to great lengths in the last few days to calm people and let people know that tactics would be different, that optics if you wilf how police tactics worked. but now tonight he is saying they were left with no option, that they had to el

and so we sent ed lavandera out, tried to knock on doors, learn more about this police officer.did you find? >> reporter: you know, that's the key to this, trying to paint as best a picture as we can of the situation here. and i think that's helpful for all viewers here. but we have tried going to the neighborhood where darren wilson lives, and he lives in a suburb of st. louis, about 25 miles away from here in ferguson. many of the residents that we met there this afternoon were reluctant to seek with us. very nervous about what the release of his name and knowing where he lives at this point might cause for the neighborhood. but we did, besides the people reluctant to talk, they did share interesting details. they said that in the days after the shooting, they noticed a large police presence or a consistent police presence in their neighborhood as people were trying to piece together what exactly was going on. and then slowly they started getting a sense and understanding that this was indeed the officer, their neighbor, that was involved in this shooting. and then several peo

i want to bring in ed lavandera there with our producer, steve.'m curious, from your vantage point, this was a peaceful protest in the name of michael brown that turned, at some point, into a violent party. is that an accurate assessment? >> reporter: by the time it turned violent, once again, the vast majority of the people who came out to demonstrate left. i don't know if it's because they sensed something was going to take a turn for the worse or they had been there long enough and ready to move along. that more sinister element moved in. it's not exactly clear. the night started off just fine. the roads were blocked off. no traffic along the road where the demonstrations have been taking place. the rule tonight was, from authorities, as long as you kept moving, kept walking and what the demonstrators were doing was going up and down the street almost in a circle, if you will, chanting and carrying on. everything was fine. but, it didn't take long before some of that started to change and it became very intense very quickly and you got that, yo

i want to bring in our ed lavandera outside church where the rally took place in ferguson. what did you hear from the people on the ground as this was going on, ed? >> reporter: it was an intentionally -- intensely passionate experience for many of the people who have sheep up here this afternoon. you know, the church sanctuary where this convenient took place today only fit about 1300 people or so inside the lobby, everything completely packed and probably close to 2,000 people who had to stand outside of the church here in the parking lot. you look around me. much of the crowd is still here. these were people who at one point simply could only gather around a local radio station's speaker, they could try to hear what was going on inside. and it was very strong and passionate words that were delivered inside. in many ways, kind of captured thing an and frustration that has been boiling over here for a little more than a week now many of the speakers talking about how they felt that michael brown was simply executed by ferguson police officer. cries for justice continued. s

let's go, we do have ed lavandera who's on the ground. i believe you are outside. these are all people that could not even get inside that rally. what is your sense on the ground there? >> it's been a staggering turnout for this unity rally. there's only about 1300 seats in the sanctuary, just a few miles away from where michael brown was killed last weekend. and fredricka, i would say there's probably close to 2,000 people, there's a local radio station that's started to pump out audio from inside the sanctuary, so the crowd's gathered around. it's an unbelievable scene. we continue to see people to flock here this afternoon. inside the service it's been very emotional, very strong words, angry at times, several speakers talking about how michael brown, quote, was executed, but the service started off with captain ron johnson who for many people has been seen as a savior in the last few days. he's the state highway police captain put in charge of security. for many of the residents in ferguson, he's been a breath of fresh air here on the streets. >> because when t

i want to bring in now cnn's ed lavandera. so many questions about the officer who shot him, darren wilson. it we now have his name, but what more have you learned about this officer? >> reporter: it's been a little of a slow process on that front. yesterday when they released the information of the officer's name, and the video of michael brown, you instantly at that press conference, which they will done at the gas station that had been burned down several days before, you got the sense and the anger was palpable. they had to push the police chief out of that area as people were completely overwhelmed and angry by the release of that information, and it's kind of overshadowed everything. you kind of got that sense that things last night were going to be a lot more tense. >> reporter: the ferguson police chief says this surveillance video shows michael brown engaged in a "strongarm robbery" moments before he was shot and killed. police say brown stole a $49 box of swisher sweet cigars, and when the store clerk confronted him,

. >> ed lavandera is down the street. he's been in the middle of all of this.at's can you tell us? >> hi, don. we're on canfield, and this is heading down the street toward where michael brown was killed. justice a little while ago, this is a restaurant on the corner. there's a group of what i saw a few minutes ago about 15 to 20 men down this street here on canfield. and you can see that two armored vehicles have made their way down the road there. and they had set fires, like a barricade of fire across the street just a short while ago. and i saw one man running up to the restaurant here and had thrown some sort of fireball. it has since been extinguished and hasn't done any damage to the restaurant there. flamed out by itself. another one there in the middle of the road which you probably can't see in the darkness. just beyond where the tanks are -- the vehicles are there, there was a line of fire and as the armored vehicle started making their way through there, the men started dispersing into the crowd. now we're hearing authorities are telling people to b

we want to go to ed lavandera joining us on the line from ferguson. give us an idea what you're seeing there? >> well, authorities here in ferguson where the protests and demonstrations have been going on for almost 10 days now, are starting to sweep through the area and trying to clear out the crowd. the vast majority of the flight everything was very calm, and then all of a sudden an intense melee broke out and authorities were just trying to clear a group of men, and started chasing them down the street. and it became very intense. we have not seen any deployment of tear gas. we spoke to several of the authorities who are dealing with -- some of the specific people they were trying to arrest, using cans -- it appeared to be pepper spray or -- in that kind of fashion, it was a much more targeted situation not the vast deployment of tear gas we've seen on some nights here, the police dressed in s.w.a.t. gear are moving up and down the street. once again, it was -- from what i saw, a group of agitators that were trying to take things top a very intens
