lawler. tell us what you think the next steps are going to be here. if jordan goes to a third ballot, you're still going to vote against him, is that right? if he continues to go the wrong direction, what's next? >> it's clear he doesn't have the votes. obviously it's up to him if he wants to put it to a third ballot. i think you'll see more folks dropping off on a third ballot. here there was a net loss of two for people who previously voted for him and flipped, and two that didn't flipped back. i don't see the outcome changing here. and so the question for jim and for the conference is how do we get back to work because that's the reality that we have to deal with. the american people sent us here to govern. they sent us here to focus on the issues that matter to them from spending to the border to the international crises that we're dealing with in israel and ukraine. and we have to get back to work. so if the votes are not there at the moment for someone to be speaker, i think it's imperative that we empower patrick mchenry to serve. at least for

i think steve mentioned kane and others, lawler and others went against him. it was the old republicans, you know, kind of from the pre-trump era, granger, people of this nature that i think have loyalty to mccarthy and scalise and stuck with them. the question is are those folks up for the fight the same way that matt gaetz and the maga far right are. we don't know. we'll learn more in the second ballot. that group, they do want to govern, they can be dealt with and traded with. what jim jordan has in his favor is the jordan folks with be the people that created this problem, those eight, they don't care if the house doesn't do anything. that's actually a win for them if the house doesn't do anything. so i think that jordan has that advantage of having, you know, these kind of anilists working on his side and maybe he can cut a deal with the more moderate republicans but i hope not. >> we've been a couple of weeks without a speaker of the house, what it means, maybe you make the argument given where we are in the political calendar, the divide in congress, no

in the clips there, you heard everybody from matt gaetz to mike lawler. when you have gaetz and lawler, those are the two extreme ends of this fight saying this is the right guy, that is reason for optimism. johnson is not a bomb tloer. he thrower. he doesn't chase fox news the way jim jordan did. you get a lot of comments about him that he is a good listener, that he is someone that people generally get along with. i watched a lot of clips of johnson the last several hours and he does sort of have a moderate tone. you know, he is not stridently bombastic or confrontational. there is even a video of him talking about how he thinks that it is his relationship to have a relationship with democrats and try to convince him that conservative ideas are better. so i think when you look at disposition, he might be what the doctor ordered. i know democrats will be against him on the january of stuff and on the biden election stuff. but the speaker has to run the house and try to work together to do big things, the disposition of someone like johnson could be what

joining us republican congressman from new york mike lawler, voted against jordan twice. i appreciate your time. is there anything jim jordan can do to get you to vote in support of him? >> as i said to jim last week, the fundamental issue, frankly, is not who the speaker is. it is the ability of the conference to work together. you have 221 members and throughout the course of the year around 20 folks have undermined the conference by voting down rules, by delaying the vote in january for speaker, by voting to vacate the chair, by refusing to support a conservative cr that would have cut spend big 8% and helped secure our border. and so the frustration among many is the ability to govern and that to me is the focus. so as i said to jim last week, if you want to be able to advance this forward, you have to get those 20 folks together with folks in swing districts and find a way forward in terms of legislation because that's what the fundamental issue is. >> and so you are no vote would seem to say he hasn't been able to do that. the bigger question now, nobody -- tell me
