>> well, good evening, lawrence. we don't have an exact number but we can illustrate how many people are trapped inside their homes. i'm standing several feet above a side street. a neighborhood street where you can see these homes just feet of snow backed on the roof. just a few minutes ago, we met two people with groceries in their hands. they were taking food to their elderly aunt. the only people who can access this road who are not on foot are snowmobilers. take a look at this speed limit sign behind me. that will give you just an idea of just how deep this snow on this street is. and then you come down, you caulk down several feet here and now you are actually on the roads. this gives you an idea of why authorities are cautioning people to stay indoors and stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary. they're describing this as a three-part storm. part one was that huge up to six feet of snowstorm in the area. now we're moving into phase two. that's up to two feet of snow overnight. phase three, they say, is

back to you. >> all right, lawrence. thank you. >>> a tense situation in the south bay after a standoff overnight lasted well into the morning. kiet do tells us, the suspect barricaded himself in a home when neighbors saw him standing in the street holding a gun and possibly a child. >> a lot of the facts out here just simply do not add up. here's what we know so far. they removed nine people from the house. seven of them were children. two of them were adults. the man with the gun was nowhere to be found. this all came to a head nine hours into the standoff with a series of explosion. [ explosions ] >> reporter: police threw concussion grenades after dawn and began shouting command over a bull horn. it began tuesday night when police got a call of a man in the street holding a gun. >> and he did have a child with him. beyond that, we're not sure what occurred after officers arrived. >> reporter: those nine kids and adults stayed in the house all night long as s.w.a.t. officers surrounded the building with assault rifles

nevada assembly, sara lawrence and conrad james in the new mexico house, sue serino in the new york senate and becky harris in the nevada senate. actually in california, janet nugent helped to end the senate super majority the democrats had. finally, voters elected at least 12 statewide female lieutenant governors and secretary of state last night and five diverse statewide elected officials on the republicans side. those include john sanchez, carlos lopez cantera, boyd rutherford and thia that doran. and ak chely we elected among them the only african-american lieutenant governor from either party across the country. we elected last night domestic candidates that promote policies that are favored by voters to create jobs, get america growing and moving ahead again, more choice in location and more opportunity for everyone. i'm proud of our team over at

here's lawrence. >>> that's the thing.terday we had the rain but now the leftover moisture from the rain and now we are seeing some very dense fog in the valleys so watch out for that this morning. out the door we go. the storm clouds have moved on by now. it looks like we'll catch a little bit of a break in the stormy weather pattern. that means we have some fog developing outside and some dense fog advisories posted in the north bay valleys. visibilities down to a quarter mile or less but be careful into the delta seeing very thick fog there, as well. by the afternoon, it will have lifted. hazy sunshine temperatures going to still stay cool. now looks like it will stay dry right for the weekend. weak ridge of high pressure building in. that means not a huge warmup for us. going to keep these temperatures down somewhat so with that in mind it looks like it will be hazy into the afternoon. around the state looking at 60s and some 70s. be careful some tule fog there early on in the morning. and then it will begin to lift as

here's lawrence. >>> scattered showers continuing to fall. some downpours out there as well so you will be driving along and all of a sudden you're in a downpour. more scattered showers right now in the bay area. another band making its way along the peninsula but heavy in the east bay you can see showers just north of livermore toward antioch into tracy. heavier downpours in tracy. in the mountains we are seeing showers there toward fremont. more scattered showers towards san jose. so already pretty impressive. more than a half inch in some of the mountains. so some good much-needed rain falling now. very slick out there. we are seeing some fog so be careful on the roads. temperatures now in the 50s out the door. and looks like this all begins to wind down toward the middle of the day and by the afternoon, i think we'll see some sunshine and a mixture of sun and clouds. temperatures will be cool. the numbers running in the 60s around the bay area. a little breezy. and by the way, gusty winds too, some of those gusts 20 and 30 miles per hour.
