hard core conservatives? >> well, you make a very good point there, lawrence. think, and also, bruce bartlet it's t wrote an excellent piece and i have respected his knowledge of party history, et cetera, i think -- for a call of caveats, this is not 1964, we must remember. we talk the hard core conservatives, none of whom who are on this panel, george will and others said, well they knew goldwater wasn't going to win. this was a year after jfk's assassination, the momentum behind the democrats was so strong anyway, and goldwater was not, a seasoned politician looking at winning the election. he wanted to make a point. and he helped to spar put new life into the conservative movement, which today, is a very powerful, very large, well-funded movement that i don't belong to, but needs to be respected. because it is out there, it constantly puts up strong candidates that lose the nomination. but have an impact on the election. and we've seen the republican party establishment able to pull the party back to the middle of the road conservatives like mitt romney, joh

lawrence is live with the state of schools in the crescent city. chris? >> reporter: yeah, erika, former president bush visited a charter school today here in new orleans and that's not hard to do, because virtually every school in new orleans is now a charter school. but we talked to some of the students who say they are still able to talk about some of the disruption that the hurricane did to their education. >> i was in a transition of, like, like transitioning to these schools, like back and forth. it wasn't helpful. >> reporter: before the storm hit, new orleans was one of the worst school districts in the entire country. after the storm, they blew it up, fired almost all of the public school employees and turned the system over to charter. today, 90% of the schools in the city are charter schools and pro-pope nents of that say it has made a huge difference. for instance, the graduation rate for young black males in new orleans is now about 65%. compare that to the district of columbia a graduation rate for young black males less than half. now, there is some controversy because some parents say that means their neighborhood school has not reopened and they have been

lawrence are closed at this hour. jean elle joins us from the scene. a lot of people coming home, a lot of neighborhoods wondering why are the streets closed? >> reporter: that's right. people are having a hardgetting home tonight. this fire started more than two hours ago and crews are still here. take a look. it's still a very active scene. you can see smoke pouring out of that strip mall that's now nearly completely burned. lots of smoke still coming out of the building. flames still appearing, firefighters are still pouring water on this building. this happened around 4:00 when a woman drove her white honda accord into the gas main man fold at the strip mall. that accident triggered a fire. witnesses say they heard an explosion and santa clara police say that driver took off. as the driver fled, the fire took off inside the strip mall. police evacuated quickly. one woman was taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation, and then i think we have chopper video we can show you. you can see the strip mall is just a shell. most of the mall is burned. two restaurants, one bar, a laundry mat, a liquor store. now nothing more than walls as firefighters continue to get this fire out. pg&e is here
