governor tom kean, representative lee hamilton, welcome to the "newshour". >> thank you. >> woodruff: you say in this report looking back over the ten years that the u.s. government has done a good job at fighting terrorism but you also say, tom kean, you warn the struggle against terrorism has entered a new and dangerous phase. what do you base that on? >> the threat is different but no less. it's not one central al quaida based in afghanistan the way it was, now it's many more countries than there were before, all working at the same time and working in different ways. bomb making techniques coming out of a group, i.s.i.s., a great danger, who are training terrorists who can come over anytime. so a lot going on. the american people can't be complacent. we need to protect oursselves as much now as we did on 9/11. >> woodruff: does that mean we are not safer today, lee hamilton? >> i think we're safer than prior to nine len. not safe enough. we still live in a dangerous worldy where a lot of people want to do us harm, so we must consider the urgency of the threat, keep it in front of

in our report, we made a couple of observations as lee hamilton just said. we talked about the success as we see it of the director of national intelligence structure finally getting to a place where there is cohesion among the agencies. we talk about the importance of the collection of information in a world in which intelligence and intelligence analysis is really our best tool to dealing with a threat. we talk about the national counterterrorism center which brings together that information and which is quite successful. and i think we also talk about the modelling that the president does for his intelligence agencies by personally calling them together on a regular basis to share information with him and with each other. so those are the observations in very brief in our report, and i'm wondering if you could comment on the state of our integration and the robustness of our ability to protect ourselves. >> thanks for having me here today, jamie. let me thank the bipartisan and policy center for holding this. members of the commission, i read their report

first of all, i would like to recognize the extraordinary leadership of tom kane and lee hamilton. from the first meeting that we had of the 9/11 commission when they pledged to do virtually everything together never appearing on the tv show without the other one. lessons to the other eight commissioners were extraordinarily profound as we had been attacked, we had lost almost 3000 of our citizens and we were going to get to the bottom of this and work across partisan lines and produce a room where that would make america safer. so all the way through we showed this great leadership for the commission and also for our country and i also want to say to my fellow commissioners that i have been blessed with a lot of different opportunities to serve our country. and i can't think of anything that has touched my heart and soul and my brain and learn more than from the people that we have worked with over the past 10 years and a loot you all and i thank you for your leadership for our country. and also you want to recognize the 9/11 family members and the people who helped us create the

but just yesterday and the day before we were here in washington hearing a report from lee hamilton and saying that some of the key recommendations had still not been implemented. the most important one being that homeland security reports to more than 90 congressional committees and subcommittees. so congress has refused to streamline the oversight of all of these homeland committee actions. and that they still have a lot of work to do on the fixes from 9/11. so you just have to ask yourself how could new york city, the biggest target potentially in the nation not be more secure than to let perhaps their pranksters and kids with skate boards, but it can be even worse. we saw the dive from the top of the freedom tower. there have been too many incidents. >> when you climbed up the side of the bridge, did you wear that black rubber body suit? >> seriously. >> i'm the only one at this table probably that goes back and forth along the brooklyn bridge. >> this is not funny. >> they have cop stations on each side of the bridge. as you might know, after a lot of years in which nothing has hap

led by former new jersey governor tom 0 kaine, a republican, and by former indiana congressman lee hamilton, a democrat, one of my mentors in the house of representatives, the commission was charged with preparing a full and complete account of the circumstances surrounding these attacks and recommending ways to make our nation more secure. this proved to be no small task. the commission interviewed more than 1,200 people in ten countries, including every single relevant senior national security official from not one but two administrations, and reviewed more than two and a half million pages of documents. despite the political tensions and partisan climate that had engulfed our nation at the time, the commission put aside their own political differences and issued the final reports ten years ago today. the 592-page report contained a full accounting of what had happened before and after the attacks and included no less than 41 recommendations on how we could prevent another tragedy like the one that was visited upon us on september 11. the report went on to sell more than one million copie
