leland vittert live in cairo. hello. >> reporter: good morning, bret, from cairo.ittle past midnight here. and the one source that is reporting president mubarak is clinically dead is the middle east news agency. you heard that from a few other diplomatic and intelligence sources. although they cannot confirm he is clinically dead. they slin think he. is whether he suffered a stroke, heart attack or combination of both. it's clear the 84-year-old former u.s. ally, and israel ally is in very ill health. he was the king of the arab world when he ran egypt and he could talk to anyone. the resolution threw him out of office less than 18 months ago was certainly a massive surprise here. and showed the power of the arab spring. whether by coincidence or perhaps the president could not take it anymore. the fact that what has happened here today, happened in terms of the sense that the resolution happened and army staged a coop. we are dealing with the results of the presidential election. tempers here in cairo are as hot as the summer heat. >> bret: leland vittert in cair

and leland vittert standing by in tahrir square with the latest. , the reaction there that he has won? >> reporter: clearly, eric, the reaction from crowd behind me, in tahrir square, the last time we heard this kind of roar was the night hosni mubarak resigned from power, 16 months ago, the crowd here is going wild. behind me, mostly this is made up of the muslim brotherhood group. and, the salafists, harder-line version of muslim brotherhood, that have been camping now in the square for about three or four days, here, awaiting these election results. and we're now about a week away from when the election and the ballot box closed, now mohamed morsi, declared the president-elect of egypt. he is in his 60s, u.s.-educated and you can still hear the roar coming up from the crowd and the muslim brotherhood promised they would not run in the presidential election, and morsi was not even the first pick of a candidate but still has won, roughly the numbers are 13 million for mohamed morsi, 12 million for ahmed shafik, part of the old hosni mubarak regime, we have fireworks going off and, so

leland vittert is live with the latest. >> reporter: good evening, shannon, it's interesting to note that the crowd is much more concerned about the presidential elections than they are about former president phaoub's health. the crowd mostly last night was made up of supporters of the muslim brotherhood who up until a couple of days ago controlled the parliament here and they are presumably the winners of the presidential election here, however the arm me has dissolved the parliament and all but said the presidential election, whoever wins won't even matter because they are going to retain all of their powers. the members of the muslim brotherhood are calling that tantamount to a military coup and that is what all the protests are about. we are 24 hours away now from thef this protest is breaking across egypt president hosni mubarak was raced to the hospital. today at the hospital some of his supporters, anti-hosni mubarak movement people, people who kicked him out of the office 16 months ago have scuffled. it appears the former president who has been in ill health for a while is on

leland vittert is streaming live from cairo with that. leland. what is the crowd like? >> reporter: probably in one word, jamie, large. in two words, large and angry. behind me atop tahrir square the whole square is full and as all the roads leading to it, packed shoulder to shoulder with people. this is a very different crowd than we've typically seen in egypt. this is hardcore islamist crowd made up the muslim brothers who are angry their man is yet to be declared president. >> we're here to support mohammed morsi because he is someone who takes --. >> reporter: this is another one of the huge crowds. another cairo mosque down here in tahrir square. the imams there in all the mosques are giving out posters of morsi. you get a sense of really the power of the muslim brotherhood. massive crowds from the mosques. when you see how many people are marching into the square. >> we are angry. but we are very sure that the victory will be for the egyptian people. >> reporter: as it stands right now, we're expecting election results in the next couple of days. the big question
