leland vittert, rick leventhal, and steve harrington.irst, adam klotz with the latest on this massive storm. hi, adam. >> hey there, shannon. he continues to be a big one. 90-mile-per-hour winds, category 1 storm. at this point, looks like it is sitting on the coast, not there yet but some of those real heavy bands of rain or moving in. there is your center of circulation, it still off the coast about 80 miles. take a look at the very happy bands of rain. they are our strong winds within these. it is really pushing the water up along the coast. flood concerns have been on the coast from central north carolina burning you all across the outer banks. winds have been there also, looking at wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour in some locations, the mid 50s, these are all right along the coast and communities just inland. out a little farther, closer to the eye, which eventually will work its way closer to the coast, wind gusts up to 81 miles per hour. wind gusts of 112 miles an hour. out at a buoy. this moves closer, the stronger winds will k

nice work, leland vittert fred will get back to you.n the meantime, meteorologist alan claus is monitoring the storm and joined us from the fox extreme weather center. >> the storm continues to just crawl down the carolina coast. that is now in south carolina, just outside of the myrtle beach area. there is your center of circulation. there it is again, just off toward the rest of myrtle beach. such a slow mover, you are looking at williamson, that is where we initially saw that landfall, only about 85 miles away from where the storm sits. everything behind it, it's been seeing the wind, rain, throughout the entire day, which means it's had a lot of time to build up that rainfall. there the rainfall is, you see most of the action back on the eastern side of the storm. particularly, lines of creating storms stretching across these areas, and that is where these have been climbing before because, as moisture has been picked up a the ocean and is dumping heavy rain. still at this point, several locations we are looking at rainfall totals u

we go to leland vittert.when you're out there in the pouring rain and a hurricane? that is so unfair. he is in morehead city, north carolina. >> it's been a long day for all of us, sean. you got a sense of why they are calling this this form of a lifetime. we talked to the police chief earlier, he said, the first couple of hours are like any other storm of these conditions standing for so long, hours upon hours of hurricane-force winds, still a couple of hours from high tide. you can see the docs continuing to rise. pretty soon they will be lifted up and they will become barges of destruction throughout this town. the marine, they don't have any power there. he said, all we got as flashlights and mr es. anyone who stayed to write it out is on their own until it passes and police and first responders had once again had back out. they have a long couple of weeks ahead of them as the flooding begins. >> sean: leland vittert to come up stay safe north carolina. we'll have a continuing coverage of hurricane floren

we're going to leland vittert in north myrtle beach. we think everything is working. >> we think so. it's important to note that the weather is so bad, the wind, the sand, the debris in the air is so bad that it's interfering with our signals and the communications that fire and police and ems use. what is interesting about this storm, the wind is blowing back at us from the northeast here, which is taking the barrier islands normally protective for the north carolina coast and turning them into a funnel of sorts to shove off of this storm surge into the rivers and estuaries here. we took a drive earlier to the other side of this community to show you the effects. from the back side of those barrier islands, you get a sense of the power of the water and the wind combined. the storm has come with the surge around the top of these barrier islands into this channel here. and now the wind is whipping this water and pushing it all the way up here. still the very beginning parts of the storm, the water is coming over the break waters. most of

chris: leland vittert reporting from atlantic beach. leland, thank you.ning us now from fema headquarters here in washington is brock long, the head of that an overview. hurricane florence done, how much more damage is it likely to do in the days and even weeks ahead? >> yeah, you know, unfortunately, we've still got several days to go. not only are you going to see more impacts across north carolina particularly as it moves from the central to the amounts of rains, but we're also anticipating you're about to see a lot of damage going through west virginia, all the way up to ohio as this system exits out. chris: i saw an astonishing figure that this storm is going to dump enough rain to fill chesapeake be bay, trillions%ñ?? of -- chesapeake bay, trillions of gallons of rain. how much damage is this going to do in terms of inland flooding or rivers -- of rivers, and how do you compare this storm in terms of inundating an area to last year's hurricane harvey? think -- hurricane harvey's a little bit different than what we're seeing. i think if you wanted to

we go back to leland vittert in morehead city. have you had any sleep in the last 24 hours?well, you can sleep later, sean. right now, frankly we don't have it nearly as bad as anybody else does in this storm. you know, you said morehead city. now we are at 24 inches of rain and counting as more rain continues to come down. certainly when we left you last night at this time, the conditions were far worse. things are improving, but it is telling how slow they are to improve. normally been about 8 to 12 hours of really intense conditions. we have had 24 hours of it one of the reefns that this storm is going to be so destructive, it may not have the wind speed but it certainly has that unbelievable amount of flooding and rainfall. it has the storm surge and it sticks around for so long that this is there is this exponential effect. we have seen that as we just drove a couple of miles around here. that's as far as we could go as far as looking at the damage. a number of businesses destroyed. homes crushed. trees to toppled. blocking highways, you name it, sean. >> sean: stay saf

for more and what is happening, let's go back to fox news correspondent leland vittert, who is still carolina, still holding onto the lamp post. leland, still you are friends with the lamp post. >> still very good friends, about to part. much to the happiness to both you and my mother on this one. the storm surge keeps coming and if you are really getting a sense of the power of the water here. that is what is the destructive nature that florence will bring bright not only here, but farther inland. what makes it the unusual is how does curving end. the barrier islands are just about two or 3 miles that way but rather than acting as a barrier, they are acting as a final for this water, as it continues to slam in here. the longer that florence turns, it could be a total of about 24 hours of hurricane conditions. the worst is going to get, not for the people out on the islands, it's bad they are, but the water levels will continue to rise here, and up the streams, farther inland, sometimes up to 100 miles inland. you could get really catastrophic flooding, which means water rescues are

now, let's bring in leland vittert up the coast in atlantic beach. leland? >> chris, florence roared ashore here thursday morning and the heavy rain has not stopped since. many of the hardest hit areas we can't even get to. behind me is the crow's nest marina, so many of the charter fishermen and shrimpers who work these waters race to pull their boats out of the water to protect them, only to have them destroyed on land. not only are so many homes here flooded or levelled, but florence took people's ability to make a living, and the channels and estuaries farther east, locals tell me there are still a lot of residents who chose to ride out the storm and are now cut off. the rescue business right after this storm is a dangerous one. we're right now just in the channels, and you can see all of the boats that were trashed here, believe it or not, people actually tried to ride the storm out on a couple of these boats. now, we are out looking for them. the coast guard has been overwhelmed by the number of calls. we have seen their helicopters circling above here

jon: leland vittert live for us in washington, thanks, leland.will mention judge kavanaugh during his stop in wheeling, west virginia tonight. joining us to discuss talk radio host from morgantown west virginia, are the kavanaugh hearings a hot-item for the folks in west virginia? >> absolutely, jon, it's a huge story in west virginia as it is all across the country. on my show we have talked about it every day, for most in the discussions the fact that joe manchin a democrat in a tight race with republican patrick morcey has not said yet how he's going to vote. when i talked to his office earlier today he's about 50-50, he hasn't made up his mind but was leaning kavanaugh before the hearings of the past week. jon: obviously the folks in west virginia are going to be watching how he votes. >> no question about that and remember i've done informal polling, formal polling that about 60% of west virginians want to see kavanaugh confirmed and that is roughly reflective of president trump's approval rating in west virginia, about 60%. on the one hand

jon: leland vittert, thank you. the slow-moving storm still dropping colossal amounts of rain on the carolinas even a miserable combination of flooded roads, broken trees and downed power lines. as if all of that is an awful enough, our fox news team as news team authority witnessed looting in one hard-hit area on the north carolina coast. rick leventhal live in wilmington. rick. reporter: john, we heard sporadic reports of looting prior to this including in wrightsville beach where there were some home break-ins where they had the coast. today we saw with their own eyes not long ago in a neighborhood not far from downtown wilmington. a lot of people wanted to a family dollar store were walking out with armloads of goods. this went on for quite sometime in the wilmington police department knew about it and decided not to do anything about it because they say according to a tweet we are aware of the looting at 13th and greenfield. unfortunately, management has asked us not to intervene at this time. the police depart

leland vittert is in morehead city, but we start with steve harrigan who is in north topsail beach.d evening, steve. >> bret, good evening. the backside of the storm refuses to break. very strong winds coming in off the side of the ocean. the rain coming in sideways. the wind is still strong enough to break off parts of houses along the beach. there is a staircase that used to be on that house across the street. losing tiles from its roof, and it's lost -- when you look down, you can see pieces of houses that were along the beach all the way down. structurally for the most part better, but we are seeing -- it's very tough to move around on the streets because of the debris, because of the water, we've had 20 inches of rain here. that's because of down power lines. it's very dangerous. people here, they've done an excellent job getting the warnings out because most of these houses have been boarded up. people have been going away sometime before, but it's going to be difficult to clean up. serious damage from the wind and the rain when the storm finally does move on from the carolina

i'm leland vittert in for shepard smith. brett kavanaugh is ready for hours of tough questions. president trump nominated cavanaugh to fill anthony kennedy's seat in july. kennedy was a crucial swing vote on major issues including abortion and gay rights. right now the court is split four liberals, four conservatives. so cavanaugh could get the chance to give the conservatives a solid majority. but the president's pick has to get through the senate republican as they hold a razor thin majority and cannot afford to lose a single vote if democrats hold ranks and all vote no. that is a big if. republican senator lindsey graham says he thinks a handful of democrats will defect and vote to confirm cavanaugh. garrett tenney picking up the top story live in washington. let's talk about the questions first that judge kavanaugh might face first in the coming days. >> senate sources say that democrats will ask brett kavanaugh about his views from the separation of powers of the government to abortion, voting rights, workers rights and

leland vittert is live in morehead city with the latest. leland?l more than a foot of rain here, more than that over on atlantic beach that you can just now see in this sort of lull of a squall line. it's hard to the imagine that these punishing winds and this driving rain have been going on now for more than 18 hours. earlier we were able to get over to atlantic beach in one such lull and check out some of the damage there. this is the main road in atlantic beach. at parts it is not quite a river yet, but certainly a small stream. the rain, obviously, continuing which means these waters will only rise especially as the tide starts to come back in. this is just one of the businesses that is completely destroy here. you can see top rows of windows blown out, the roof -- according to the fire department -- is blown out. and there was the front door. now anyone can just walk through. now becomes even the bigger question for so many of these businesses, after wind and water will have destroyed so much, will the looters come, something the police are in

our leland vittert is downstream. leland? >> the highway patrol has come to close this road here.watched it go from a little water to rushing water. important. this is how people die in hurricanes. the running water and the fast run during floods. people try to make it across these recovers and unable. the cape fear river itself is at least a mile that way. still they have all of this water continuing to rise here. late yesterday afternoon, our photographer went out with rescue crews as they were going door-to-door on their boats driving down streets, making sure that people were out of every home that was there. those people that were still in their homes, they delivered a dire warning. pretty simple. if you stay, we probably will not be able to come back and get you as this water continues to rise, shepard. it's a race against time for the highway patrol. they only have so many troopers and they have more roads potentially to get flooded as they warn people that there's not an option to go across the water as it continues to rise here, shepard. >> shepard: leland vittert on scen

first we go to leland vittert in north carolina. >> we'd like to tell you how much water is in this city, but we can't because the monitoring system for flooding was overwhelmed by the rising river levels and the water is still on the rise. video from a few minutes ago as the boys from fort bragg, the 82nd airborne came in with their high water trucks to rescue people and bring them out from the town. the entire town had been surrounded. they drove in to be able to try and pull people out. about 20 or so people stuck at a school that they had all evacuated to, that the national guard and army are now pulling out one by one. using high water vehicles all over north carolina for the past few days. in fact, some people they have had to pull out and put on life flight helicopters over the past couple of hours. in addition, of course, to the u.s. army, there are volunteers from around the country, but specifically a lot of guys from north carolina who have come in putting their own lives on the line to rescue people. take a listen to them describe the scene this afternoon. >> everything's gon

our leland vittert has made his way there in new bern. how does it look today? hello. >> hi, bill. and add another band of rain on top of that flooding here. if people didn't evacuate when they were told to before this storm, they were driven out of these neighborhoods by the water, often times they had to be rescued by boat during the worst of the storm. this is one of the first communities that would flood. it's about as far east as you get and right up one of the rivers that feeds down into the atlantic. and the storm surge feeded up here into new bern. closer to the coast there is some structural damage that we found, a number of businesses that had been destroyed by the winds, just ripped to shreds. earlier today we went out on a boat rescue and people, if you can believe it, tried to ride out this storm on a sail boat. the coast guard has been so overwhelmed, we went with them and checked sail boat after sail boat. a number have been ripped off their moorings and tossed up on some of the islands in the channels here in north carolina. we weren't able to find the people. the h
