sunday is lemonade day, a national effort to spark young entrepreneurialism. in tonight's "kids and cash," michael holthouse founder of national lemonade day spoke to us about how children can benefit from the experience of running their own business. >> we want to expose them to business and capitalism and free enterprise, but the essence of what they learn is simply this. that they can set a goal, they can make a plan and they can work that plan and achieve whatever it is they want to achieve. their version of the american dream. >> tom: give us an idea of what type of plan a kid may have who is operating a lemon stand. >> well, every single youth is going to come up with their own unique product. even though it's all lemonade, maybe grandma's secret recipe or maybe organic or special sweetner. and so it's all about pricing, what the market will bear, where you're located and your cost of goods like any other business. >> tom: lemon prices are two and a half times higher. >> absolutely >> tom: what about profits? >> what kids do is that in their neighborhood

once in a while a neighbor would come by and would excuse herself and come out with a pitcher of lemonade or ice tea. she had those tea cakes that i loved. most of the time children would say go on and play. you wouldn't listen to grown up's conversation. at that point we were all welcome. the stories were layered. seniors got something that the young parents and fathers learned, then teenagers and little ones. we all got something out of the story. they were layered. i try to do that in my writing. i try to layer so that the reader who is sharing the story with the young person will get something out of it or see something they can learn from as well. my mother loved to do poetry. i would sit in the hallow of her arm and begin resiting dunbar poetry. [inaudible] you as dirty as me. look at that mouth. him being so sweet and sticky, goodness. i would say momma, do it again, please. i would beg her to do it again, she would say, no, go to bed, now. i grew up listening to dunbar who wrote in dialect, little brown baby. he wrote beautiful things in standard english. an angel robed in spotles

the white house is looking for a way to turn lemons into lemonade, hit the big oil companies with something they don't want, which is taking away some of the big oil subsidies that uncle sam has given them over the years. we are talking $35 billion in subsidies, depending on how you do the math. it's because the white house is worried about the economic effect that the rising prices are having on the economy. a university of san diego professor estimates for every dollar a gallon that gas price goes up, it sucks $7 million out of the local economy. a lot of critics have taken away the subsidy saying if you take it away, they are going to put it back into the pump price. there's a little good news at the ends of this. the latest survey suggests prices may be peaking. it's only because we can't afford the high-priced gas. >> thank you much. we were with the president at facebook a couple days ago. he said over and over. he kept bringing up gas prices. he sees it as a political point to score. >> it's a good call. >> yeah. voters are concerned about it. if you are using gas to get to and from
