joining me now is republican strategist leslie sanchez. also former los angeles mayor antonio villaraigosa, and angie marie hancock. thanks to all of you for being here for my l.a. debut of "nerd land." talk to me a little bit, what is it about california that allows it to be kind of a laboratory for these kinds of policies, not always progressive but recently quite progressive? >> well, first of all, it is not a new if he none that. this has been happening for a long time, and particularly in the '90s when we had a democratic majority and a democratic governor. toughest assault weapons ban. i was the author. healthy families. health care for children. 750,000 children had health care. we were focused on many issues -- poverty, women's rights, civil rights. these are issues that california's been grappling with and leading the way on for a very, very long time. now clearly with an even greater majority, you're seeing that we're starting to lead the nation again across the board as was mentioned just a few minutes ago. >> even as i was talk

with me now, leslie sanchez, a former executive director in the george w. bush white house. eat to see you. so what should carson's strategy be tonight? >> carson has a lot off questions he's going to be responsible to answer. i think that vulnerability is that people are starting to think he's not necessarily forthcoming, he's not as truthful as people had thought originally he was. so he's going to expect pointed questions, he needs very clear answers and he needs to continue to show why he has solutions that can move america forward. i think that's the biggest part that's been missing other than the allure of a nice kind of agreeable candidate, where is his leadership especially on some of the big issues of the day which is going to be immigration in this debate. >> and also that's i guess the question i would have for you, what is trump going to do with those questions? i mean the economy, but also immigration. >> as much as these candidates tonight are going to -- are going to want to talk about the economy, moving america forward, this recent immigration decision is rea

leslie sanchez is a republican strategist, former official in the george w.ration and howard dean, former governor of vermont. to you both, i'm going to apologize for the brevity of this conversation but with regard to donald trump calling for a muslim database and plans to monitor certain mosques, do you think that this is striking a different tone than past comments he's made on the undocumented immigrants coming from mexico? >> no, just insert a new ethnic group here. that's very clear about him. you cannot defend the indefensible with donald trump. and there are some people with this heightened state of global fear for everyone that we know it calls for sound leadership and calm kind of command of the issues. and that's not someone with donald trump who is exploiting fear. so i think there's a big contrast between donald trump and the rest of the gop contenders. i'm just going to reiterate for everyone, you are a republican strategist. howard, donald trump was doubling down on the comments he made about 9/11. this happened at a rally yesterday in alabama.
