libby was not as courageous as custer. libby was terribly frightened of thunderstorms and hid under the bed whenever there was thunder. custer was known for his exceptional courage, leading his men into battle. i don't see that you can really make that comparison. but more than that, it seems to me a foolish comparison. ultimately ambrose is saying that libby wasted her life being the wife and then widow of george armstrong custer, that had she been born a boy, he says, she might have risen to the very top of society. i think that's speculative, and there's no real basis for knowing what libby's life would have been like. but i think it's insulting to the life that she did very consciously choose for herself. she did not regard being george armstrong custer's widow as some sort of lesser thing. she regarded it as a very honorable occupation. and when you consider that women simply very rarely had professions at the time in which she lived, i would say that she made a very good choice. being his widow did become a professio

libby casey joining us lye. libby, president obama is going to spend three days visiting alaska, so what is his message? >> richelle his main message is climate change is real, it's happening, and it's a threat. here temperatures are rising twice as fast as in other parts of the world, and alaska's glaciers are melting three times faster than they were in the previous century. basically this is ground zero for climate change. the president is here to see it for himself, but also get worldwide attention on what is happening, and this comes in advance of his trip, while the united states really looking at paris this fall. we'll see international leaders gather to talk about climate change in paris. this all will provide a great back -- backdrop for this. secretary of state john kerry said it is certainly a great concern in the arctic but a concern for the rest of the world. >> the bottom line is climate change is not a distant threat for our children and their children to worry about. it is now. it is happening no

i'm libby casey. antonio mora is on assignment. we begin with the massive explosion in northeast china, all out rescue effort is under way. chinese president xi jinping is calling for a investigation in the port city of ti rarvetionnjin. meanwhile these are some of the images of the aftermath of the explosion. the area resembles a post apocalyptic scene. authorities say they expect the number of casualties to rise in the coming hours. adrian brown filed the report from nearby beijing. >> this is an incident continuing, according to the local authorities the force of the first blast equaled more than 3 tons of tnt, and the second blast more than 21 tons of tnt so a huge blast. some residents say they felt like it was an earthquake. many people perhaps as many as 300 have been taken to hospital. there have been a number of deaths. now authorities stress they believe this was simply an industrial accident, nothing more serious than that but we have to put this into context. industrial accidents like this

libby casey in washington. and the nuclear deal is helping to accelerate a thaw in had relations between britain and iran. the reopen the embassy in tehran. it was stormed by protesters and he closed. >>> it tensions are escalating between north south korea today. the two nations exchanged live fire across their heavily nortfied border, and this comes as the u.s. and south korea hold their joint had military is exercises. now a south korean news agency reports that north korea's leader has ordered the he hello military to have it "full readiness for war." >> reporter: for 11 days now, santa claus shot clock has been using giant speakers to put shared messages across the border with the north. and wednesday, north korea, twice shooting at the south carolinian territory. the south koreanle military fired back with dozens of rounds of artillery, around the same time that it said it will have military action if the speakers weren't taken down within 48 hours. the military raised it's had alert to the highest level.

libby casey is standing by for us in washington, d.c., libby it occurs to us that many members of congress no matter what the president says have already made up their minds, so who in your opinion is the president trying to reach with this speech? >> some members of congress, especially republicans have come out against this deal, some have come out for it, but there are a lot that are still on the fence. some may have made up their minds, but aren't revealing their decision yet. president obama still wants to appeal to democrats in particular, to try to pull them over to his side. to do that, he needs the support of the american people. so you heard there at the end of the speech an appeal to members of the house and senate, but also the president urging the american people to let their members of congress know that they support this deal. so it is a two-fold message. and president obama trying to make some parallels with history, looking at americans belated disapproval of the iraq war, saying to the american people, this is a similar situation to that one. >> thank you, line be. standi

libby casey is there. libby how big is big? >> del, bernie sanders is bringing his po populace message against the establishment, his speech getting a lot of cheers from this crowd includes calls to fight climate change to increase veterans benefits and strengthen social security. and also talking about racial inequality del. take a listen. >> i ask the economic policy institute to do a study for me. i asked them to take a look at kids who are high school graduates, between the ages of 17 and 20, and what their unemployment and underemployment rates were. this is what they found: if the kids were white, high school graduates, 17 to 20, 33% of them were unemployed or underemployed. if they were hispanic, 36%. if they were african american, 51%! >> reporter: bernie sanders says he has long been fighting against racial inequality del and doing everything from trying to bring down the number of black men in prison, trying to make sure college is more affordable and for trying to push back against what he calls institutional racism,

libby carlson is live in south carolina. tell us more about the size of the clouds.e can certainly tell it's a loud group of people. >> rochelle, we are still in the warmup act but you can hear the crowds are already going crazy. senator bernie sanders has been able to fill venues to capacity here in south carolina. last night in columbia, more than 2,000 people turned out. in fact, there were about 700 people more who were in an overflow area. they couldn't even get in but they took around. they had to move the venue in charleston to accommodate more people. i spoke to a lot of people here. some are strong sanders, and his pledge not to take money from super pacs and his pledge to fight big business and big politics. we are also hearing from a lot of people who want to hear what their options are. they are curious about his message. they like the idea of having a choice, not just voting for hillary clinton because she has such strong name recognition. the question will be can sanders capitalize on these crowds in a red state, a significant state because south caroli
