abc7's lilian kim is near jefferson street at the gift shop where it happened. lilian? >> please have it blocked off between jones and taylor and as you said at the heart of fisherman's wharf and officers are processing the scene. the shooting happened at a store that sells everything from perfume to handbags. two store employees and a man and woman were shot and killed and a male suspect is in custody. that's all the information we have been given from officers here on the scene, and we do not know the relationship between the victims and the suspect. nor do we know the circumstances of what lead up to the shooting. what we do know is that many people were in the area when this happened and that the shots along the street were still open. we talked to two tourists from texas in the area when the shooting occurred around 8:00. >> it is a little scary for tourists. we are hearing it doesn't happen like this, but we are extremely busy at the time. scary we had almost gone in the store, but went to get something to eat first. >> this is my first time in san francisco. >> w

abc7's lilian kim is live with the story. lilian? >> dan, there is a lot of activity here. we are between 22nd and 23rd and firefighters are busy moping up as investigators try to determine what caused the fire. when firefighters arrived on florida street in san francisco, they saw flames shooting out of the roof. this cell phone video captured the fire soon after it started. it began on the top floor of this two-story two-unit building. darrin clayton was home at the time and he says he saw smoke coming out of his roommate's bedroom. >> it was super smoky in there. i go to the backdoor and open it up. when i turn around, the closet was erupted in flames. i grab my bag and call 9-1-1. >> tenants in the bottom unit got out as fast as they could, and even one tried to put the fire out. >> we ran up and i got the fire distinguisher and i tried to put the fire out, but i couldn't do nothing with it because the flames were already big. i couldn't do anything about it. >> in fact, flames spread to the building next door. in all, 16 people were told to evacuate. no one gots hurt a

national transportation safety report revealed that wells on the pipeline had severe defects and lilian kim is here with more. >> the pipe was installed in 1956, and experts say based on the report released today, they are surprised the pipe didn't explode earlier. the national transportation safety board says the pipeline that exploded in the san bruno neighborhood in september had dozens of defective wells. in the report, the ntsb wrote the longitudinal scenes showed very yaws -- various defects including incomplete fusion and under cutting. the stanford professor is an expert metal energy at stanford. >> there are things that eminate krangs and they grew with time and eventually to critical size. so clearly if you hand the procedures in place, those might have been caught. >> but no such inspections ever took place because up until recently, pg&e thought the pipe was seem less. in a scathing statement, congresswoman jackie spear wrote "the loss of life might have been prevented if pg&e properly identified the risks it had underground in the glen view neighborhood. the utility will ha

with the story about william, are you at all conscious of forebearing at "the new yorker" and the lilian law and the name could go on obviously. but david, what is that legacy as you go into a story for "the new yorker" where it's so separate? >> i think it's an asset in the sense that i look at a lot of these people, i read "in cold blood" "and then " execution" which didn't come out of "the new yorker" which is a great crime -- well, it's based on nonfiction. these are templates. then when i'm working on a story, i try not to think about those things. if i had in my head i'm truman caponi, i don't think i'd ever get a word out. [laughter] >> so i use it as inspiration. i often for each one of my stories, i will look to certain stories. and i will read them. and say, okay, these provide sometimes inspiration is not so linear. and it's about trying to portray a character and getting inside a character or more essays on the piece by janet malcolm. i look at these. and they help me. once i'm working on the story, i tend to forget all of that stuff. i'd be paralyzed if i was thinking too mu
