linda douglass is good enough to join us from the white house, to bring us up to date on what's going on. she's the president's communications director on health care reform. linda, thank you for being with us. >> thanks for having me. >> this town hall strategy, did it come from the white house, and is it working, given all the chaos that we've been seeing going on, really, all over the country? >> well, you know, typically, during any recess when congress is not in session here in washington, members of congress go home and talk to their constituents about issues they are grappling with in washington, and every recess the members have gone home and held town hams to talk to constituents about health reform and the rising cost of health care and the imfact it's having on their lives. first of all, people want to hear from their elected representatives about how this is going to work. secondly, the representatives want to hear from the people about how they're coping with rising costs. >> yeah, yeah, but -- we know all that, linda. the question is, what do you say about all these peop

then, this morning, linda douglass said, no, the president really wants a public option. which is it? >> let me do two things here. first, i am going to say, what's most important to the president here is that we are going to fix health care in the country, if we are going to bring down costs and increase competition, what we need to do is have a plan that does those things. unless we get something in plays that helps bring down costs, we are not going to help to stabilize the economy. we are not going to be able to make sure that americans aren't losing their health insurance. we are not going to be able to make sure that businesses aren't in worse shape and the federal government isn't going to be able to fix the deficit problem. what the president has said and the folks in his administration, i just sent all these quotes to ed henry, the most important part is choice, competition, bringing down cost. he thinks that the best way to do that is a public option. but he is, of course, going to sit there and listen to other ideas that about what people have to say. >> so you

joining me is linda douglass, the white house communications director for the office of health care reform. linda, good to have you on tonight. will you tell us that you understand, or maybe you don't, i don't know, the confusion that has been out there with the conflicting sound bites that we've gotten in recent days? what about that? >> i got to tell you, ed, i don't think there was anything inconsistent in those two sound bites that you just played. what the president said is that it is very, very important to have an insurance exchange. an insurance exchange is a marketplace for people who don't have health insurance, are underinsured, may work for a small business. not the majority of people who have insurance from work already. but the group of people who need to have access to affordable health care options. and on that -- the reason we want that insurance exchange is it's going to lower costs, it's going to increase competition and choice. those are the goals. that's the reason that the president likes the public option. because he thinks it would achieve those goals. that is all o
