terry. >> thanks, lisa. this morning two children kidnapped by their father and taken for a ride on a stolen boat are safe. three-year-old brooklyn and two-year-old devin maffei were rescued last night off the california coast. this morning their father is in custody. we have the story from the coast guard pier in monterey. >> the coast guard cutter hawksbill came in unleashed. the stolen sailboat in which 43-year-old christopher maffei sailed away with his two children, the four-year-old and two-year-old on tuesday. south san francisco police sergeant bruce mcphillips announced the successful recovery of the children. >> i'm glad to announce that devin and brooklyn maffei have been rescued from their three day ordeal at sea. >> the coast guard received notice friday morning the boat had been spotted. after launching several craft, they shadowed it until they were able to come close enough to contact christopher maffei. >> we asked if we could put a boarding team on board and he said that would be fine. >> b

lisa will have the forecast in a little bit. the burmese opposition leader who spent nearly 15 years under house arrest is making her first visit to the bay area. about 9:00 this morning they will take part in a town hall style meeting at the war memorial gymnasium. yesterday she addressed an audience in downtown san francisco. abc7 news reporter leeann melendez told us about this important visit. >> she received a hero's welcome at the san francisco's asia foundation. she's come to symbolize the struggle of the burmese people to be free when she herself was allowed to leave her home only two years ago. >> it is now up to all of us who remain to make sure that the transition comes as peacefully and as quickly as desirable. >> during her visit to the bay area, she met with political leaders and on tremendous entrepreneur and expressed their willingness to help support her country. she cautioned true progress in burma must include all people. >> it's not enough to help a country which is emerging from dictatorship into democracy.

terry. >> thanks a lot, lisa. new this morning, one of the largest volunteer efforts in the world take place today. in the bay area this morning thousands of volunteers are expected to hit beaches, shore lines and inland waterways for the state's 28th annual coastal cleanup day. put on gloves and pick up trash, debris and other discarded junk that pollutes our beautiful coastline and rivers. in fact, more than 100 countries will take part in an international effort. it is spread worldwide with 9 million pounds of garbage picked up last year. our coastal commission said more than 1.3 million pounds of trash was picked up right here in california. volunteers are needed at dozens of locations starting at 9:00 this morning. in oakland, head to lake merit. help clean the lake creeks and in san jose at the guadalupe visitors center. richmond, head to the shoreline at peninsula drive and marina bay parkway. many more local events are posted on the california coastal commission's website. also new this morning, today is t

here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning. just over two hours left of summer and then we usher in fall. plenty of clear skies as our northern gradient is keeping the fog at bay. it will start off sunny with temperatures dropping into the 40s in the north bay, 50s elsewhere, and by noontime we are about 60 coastside, mid-70s in the inland valleys. look how warm, to the upper 80s, near 90 around the tri-valley. some fog is going to come back along the shoreline for the later afternoon hours. in fact, the sea breeze is going to kick up after about 1:00 to 25 miles an hour and changes are in store for the first full day of fall tomorrow. we will talk about those coming up. terry. >> lisa, thanks very much. >> this morning several businesses are cleaning up after a second straight night of protests after a shooting that occurred thursday night. at least 40 demonstrators returned last night and threw things at police. one officer was injured. they damaged several mission district businesses, including a paintball attack that broke

abc7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian is live with the story. lisa? >> dan, the fire started just after 7:00 tonight in the house behind me. take a look. you can see a lot of damage left behind. and right now firefighters and investigators are sifting through the remains. the cause is still under investigation. itthe fire started in the garage, and you can see how high the flames left from the building. there was a lot of confusion when firefighters first got here in east san jose. the family who lives here got out safely, but they thought one other person was trapped in the garage. so firefighters went in using thermal heat imaging cameras trying to find that person. who it turns out wasn't even home at the time. while crews are inside they realize the fire had gotten into the attic. >> the roof was weak early on. our crews took a lot of risk looking for the potential rescue victim. once we determined there wasn't anybody there and the roof weakened we pulled everybody outside for their safety and went to a defensive operation. >> there was a lot of

tray. >> lisa, thanks very much. this morning we begin with a special prayer vigil for a critically injured san jose firefighter. it will be held at 4:00 this morning. this is in honor of 41-year-old veteran firefighter frank ryan who remains in intensive care. he collapsed while battling the fire at state patrick's cathedral. firefighters did save saint patrick's school that will hold sunday services this morning. we have an update from the hospital. >>> more than 200 st. patricks cathedral parishioners crowded the gymnasium at the school to say mass. they have to worship here because the fire broke out and heavily damaged their church on east santa clara street on thursday. this is also where 41-year-old frank ryan collapsed due to a heart attack after coming out of a flaming building to replenish his oxygen bottles. fire captain brian indicott visited him in the hospital. >> everything we are getting so far is definitely in a positive direction. we are very happy. >> captain indicot and other members of the truck
