liu believed in the possibility of a city free of fear.find striking is that we now know so much about these two officers but oftentimes unless a tragic situation like this we don't know. we don't know many of our officers in our neighborhoods. how much of this is about improving relations between communities, police the mayor's office police so we know the people who are out there protecting us? >> well, we have to improve those things but i think when you talk to more police officers and more people in the community, there is a relationship. when you walk a beat and you see these same people come out of stores every day or the same subway stop they take every day, you know these people. you smile at them. they smile at you. you see when their face looks different and say, hey, everything good today? you know i'm fine. and you get a relationship with these people. and you get to understand them. and you -- even if you don't live in that community, which doesn't happen all that often, at least when i was on the job, you get to feel like yo

the sacrifices made that wenjian liu made. >> he made the ultimate sacrifice. i think we all knew taking the job that we did that there was always a possibility that we might not come home or might not come home in one piece. and i'm sure we've all had experiences that we've had people that weren't the most pleasant people to deal with. when you're in this business, you're not dancing with angels. between the three of us, we could trade a number of war stories to corroborate that. being a community policing officer, beat officer which the nypd no longer has beat talks -- don't forget they lost 7,000 or 8,000 police officers compared to what they had prior to 9/11. just through attrition. and they didn't rehire that amount as those people left. so that's a big problem, too, because there's a manpower issue where in order to have beat officers in those precincts you need to have officers available to do that. aside from -- now it's no longer cops and robbers. it's cops robbers, and terrorists. a whole significant portion of the nypd that goes 24 hours, 7 days a w

they called him joe liu. we also heard from members of the community, a commissioner william bratton, commissioner cal ease and also the mayor bill de blasio who talked about how wenjian liu's family was -- the risk that had he to undertake every day once he went to work but he had the calling to be a part of the nypd, and so every day when he would come home from work he would cull call on his father to let his father know that he was home from his shift and that he was safe. i mention that mayor bill de blasio spoke, and there was some concern that some officers might, again, turn their backs to the mayor when he spoke because of some of the ongoing tensions. there was concern that last week that officer ramos's funeral, that took away from the narrative of celebrating an officer's life and mourning his life and laying him to rest and so this week police commissioner william bratton a very small fraction of them still did turn their back on the mayor to show that they do support the nypd and they were want

funeral services were held in brooklyn for officer wenjian liu liu.e officer raphael ramos were ambushed two weeks ago shot sitting inside their cruiser. investigators say the shooter acted in retaliation for the police killings of michael brown and eric garner. since the officers were murdered there has been heated tension between many police officers and new york city mayor. at today's services a big reminder that that tension has not yet been resolved. we'll have a full report coming up on that a little later in this newscast. >> elsewhere philadelphia police arrived to the scene of a car crash to discover the victim in the car had actually been shot. this all happen just after 3:00 this morning on the 3700 block of dell high street in north philadelphia. investigators say the driver of a mini van struck three parked cars before comeing to a stop and then when officers checked on that 39-year-old man they noticed he had been shot in the chest. the driver side right there at the scene. so far no word on who shot him. >>> no tonight we're waiting for

brian is outside the wake of officer liu with the latest. brian? >> reporter: judge, all day in the cold and rain, nypd officers and officers from around the country as far as california and arizona have come here to the funeral home in brooklyn to pay their respects, just 20 minutes away from where officer whennian liu, 32 years old and a seven-year veteran was murdered two weeks ago. earlier this afternoon police commissioner bill bratton and embattled mayor bill de blasio went inside the funeral home for 20 minutes. inside, a somber scene as the officers joined about 30 members of liu's family, his widow noticeably thinner. arriving from southern china when we was just 12 years old, liu always dreamt of becoming a cop, especially inspired after 9/11. new york's governor andrew cuomo had this to say during his visit today. >> young man officer liu, who this was his dream to become an nypd officer, in some ways it's the ultimate assimilation into america, into new york to become and obviously he was so proud and he was so proud for his whole famil
