for it, you're already hearing those comparisons being made by republican lawmakers that we saw liz cheney on the hugh hewitt broadcast making comparisons about what that does to the credibility about the president's threat of military action here. how concerning is that for this president? >> well, the parallels are great as you say. and the biggest concern for the president, i'm sure, is that he was the one who so frequently derided what was called the red line decision. now in this case, of course, as you just heard from joe, there were no american casualties from taking down this surveillance drone. and the president was bound to cause some casualties whether it was 150 or more or less, we don't know, from hitting ground stations out there. and i think there would have been a sense if he drew first blood. in the obama case, of course, you had already seen significant loss of life from assad's use of chemical weapons against his own people. and so in some cases you could argue that the obama decision would have been more justified than the one the president pulled back from. interesting

but what's interesting, today, we saw liz cheney on hugh hewitt's broadcast, "fox & friends" this morningmilar comparison and criticisms here. the president watches and listens to that kind of stuff, how does he react to that internal criticism? >> as we know, there are a lot of ways to send messages to him. and that's a way to do it. i also think that what we don't know yet, and this is reporting that i assume will come out later today, is exactly why ehe made this decision. we've seen him tweet this morning that he was told at the last minute that lives were at stake. but one of my sources said, you know, historically, what do you do in a situation like this? you're not going after civilian targets. they're surgical strikes. you go after, let's just say, the military installation that was responsible for shooting down the drone. the other possibility is, if you're told there are going to be a lot of deaths, one senior republican who has worked in past administrations in situations like this said to me, so go back and let's ask for a target where there would be fewer potential, you know,

but now you have republicans like liz cheney making comparisons to the president, this president notcing a red line here. how does the president handle that criticism? >> well, i think he handles it by rejecting it but i do think hearing criticism from other republicans of that nature, comparing him to what many people feel was pretty valid criticism of president obama for allowing his own red lines to be crossed and not doing much, that is going to i think bother this president significantly. he has not laid out -- he seemed to be moving the red line yesterday, right? his public remarks, and i think he did it again in an interview with nbc, he suggested if it had been a manned drone, then there would have been a bigger issue, but since this was just a piece of technology, that was not really the same kind of thing. so there seems to be a shift there, but i think he's going to plow through it the same way he always does and essentially ignore it. i do think the comparisons to obama will be what get to him. >> admiral, this was unmanned, but it was $110 million drone flying in interna

but now you have republicans like liz cheney making comparisons to the president, this president not a red line here. how does the president handle that criticism? >> well, i think he handles it by rejecting it but i do think hearing criticism from other republicans of that nature, comparing him to what many people feel was pretty valid criticism of president obama for allowing his own red lines to be crossed and not doing much, that is going to i think bother this president significantly. he has not laid out -- he seemed to be moving the red line yesterday, right? his public remarks, and i think he did it again in an interview with nbc, he suggested if it had been a manned drone, then there would have been a bigger issue, but since this was just a piece of technology, that was not really the same kind of thing. so there seems to be a shift there, but i think he's going to plow through it the same way he always does and essentially ignore it. i do think the comparisons to obama will be what get to him. >> admiral, this was unmanned, but it was $110 million drone flying in internation
