local five news, we are iowa. jack: this institute for justice group that's helping these women in their lawsuit has filed similar cases in other states. 12 in fact -- they've won 11 in other states. the 12th one is pending in missouri. jack: developing now in des moines. the hunt is on for students suspected of firing a gun outside east high school this afternoon. des moines police think they've identified the vehicle involved. witnesses saw what looked to be a fight about to break out, and students hop into an s-u-v and fire off a gun. it happened about a 1/2 block from east high's campus, as the students were leaving. a des moines public schools spokesperson says east high went into lockdown mode for seven minutes as the situation was underway. something that happened in a school tops headlines. jack: the south resource on camera violently arresting a female high school student has been fired. richland county sheriff leon lott blamed the student and what he called her "disruptive, disrespectful behavior" for th

"local 5 news midday in hd starts now. we are iowa" amanda good morning and thanks for joining us for local 5 news midday...i'm amanda krenz amanda the man police say went on a shooting spree through pleasant hill neighborhoods last year- took the witness stand in his own trial yesterday. amanda: pete polson told the jury he's been battling drug abuse since the early 2000's and was clean for awhile. the 33 year old said thats until he relapsed near halloween of last year. he lost his job, girlfriend and started using meth again, including using the night before the shooting took place on november 17th. polson told the jury he doesnt remember shooting at the three victims. he didnt realize anything until the officers arrested him that morning "i just know i would never intentionally do any of it, im sorry form the bottom of my heart, i apologize, its i wish i wouldve shot myself that day rather htan shooting these people. i never meant to harm any of you or your families " amanda: earlier in the day the prosecution revealed

look for the latest here on local 5. stephanie: new tonight at ten, clear of all charges after an internal investigation of an officer involved shooting. stephanie: senior police officer vanessa miller shot a man back in june. a grand jury didn't press charges back in august after their investigation. we're learning tonight that des moines police cleared her as well. during a routine traffic stop, another vehicle pulled up to the officers car, blocking the sqaud car's doors. the driver of that car got out of his car and was acting erractically, then drove off sparking a low speed chase. he pulled a u- turn and approached officer miller's squad car. she fired at him, he died from that wound. local 5 will sit down with des moines police tomorrow for the full details of their internal investigation, this will include the dash cam video of the incident. jack: taking a look around iowa, a coach and teacher accused of inappropriately sleeping next to a student. jack: the head football coach and social studies teacher from sibl

this is local 5 midday. we are iowa" sabrina:: a big change for pedestrians in downtown des moines over the weekend.... multiple blocks on 12th street have been converted into two way traffic. finishing touches were applied to the stretch from mulberry all the way down to grand sunday. city officials say one of the biggest benefits of the conversion is increasing traffic to local businesses. they say after people punch out for the day, they'd still like them to stay in the downtown area. business owners say it should help attract new clients.
