lofgren is recognized. ms. lofgren: thank you, mr. speaker. i'd like to recognize the gentlewoman from california, my colleague, ms. chu, for three minutes. the speaker pro tempore: the gentlewoman is recognized for three minutes. ms. chu: i rise today in support of h.r. 3648, the equal access to green cards for legal employment or the eagle act of 2022. while i, like many others here today, would prefer to see a more robust approach to fixing our broken immigration system, the bill before us today is an important step in the right direction. this bill will have a large impact on many immigrants and notably an overwhelming impact on asian immigrant workers who have been historically barred from applying for u.s. citizenship. right now there are approximately 1.4 million individuals trapped in our backlogs waiting for available employment-based visas. the vast majority, as high as 80%, are asian immigrants who are currently facing waiting times as high as 90 years from india or 44 years from china. critically, the bill also more than doubles th

lofgren: we do think so.t is why we referred him to the department of justice for the possibility of prosecution, but having said that, they have to reach their own conclusions. as prosecutors, they have to make a judgment, whether they have evidence sufficient to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that these crimes were committed. we think they do, but they have to make up their own judgment. judy: and if their final judgment is not to pursue criminal charges, does that mean the committee's work in some respect was in vain? rep. lofgren: no, i don't think so. we have already today made amendments to the electoral count act. it's not everything the house wanted, but it is better than the current state, so it will be much more difficult for somebody to try to steal the election in the future through the arcane mechanisms of the electoral count act. we are going to take a look at a number of other legislative opportunities. i think the other thing is that the american people now realize that there is a threat to o

lofgren: thank you. over the last 18 months, the select committee has connected an investigation of enormous scale, seeking to uncover the depth and breath of ex-president trump's plan to reverse the lawful outcome of the election. we have compiled an immense volume of documents collected from countless individuals, law enforcement agencies, federal and state authorities. many of our efforts to get the evidence required litigation in federal court, including the u.s. supreme court, who has taken the testimony of hundreds of witnesses. while we could not show them all during the hearings, we focused on those who were most central, including our ex-president's white house aides officials and , senior members of his campaign. based on this evidence, the select committee has reached a series of specific findings. many of these pertain to what has been called the big lie, enormous efforts by trumpet to -- president trump to spread baseless accusations and miss information in an attempt to falsely convince ten

congressman soul lofgren, from the democratic of -- . congresswoman, i just want to get your sense of what you think the most top line of this report, which is comprehensive in detail in a whole bunch of ways. what is it? >> well, that the ex president was at the center of this illegal scheme, to overturn the election. he had help, in the form of mark meadows and a various others. but he was at the center of this unlawful effort to overturn the election. we believe that you take all the evidence that we compiled, and look at the criminal statutes of their, and there is reason that he shouldn't be prosecuted, so we sent that over to the department of justice. of course they have to make their own independent decision, but we think that the evidence that we have compiled is important. and significance. >> i want to read a portion of cassidy hutchinson's transcript, which is very interesting. and i mention this just as zoom in a little bit. she talks about the experience of basically being told to not be candid for the committee. two advert

joining us this morning is congresswoman zoe lofgren, she serves as a member of the house january 6thmittee. i thank you for being with us this morning. you were a part of that subcommittee studying whether to issue criminal referral so the justice department. what are you looking at? and what can we expect? >> the subcommittee is made up of all the lawyers. we met a couple times. what we want to do is to make sure that whatever recommendation, and that's all it is, to the department of justice that we could make is firmly rooted in the evidence that we have uncovered. and so we're working through this. we're not quite done, but we will be done within days for sure. taking a look at all of the evidence, comparing the evidence to the criminal code and then discussing that amongst us. there's no acrimony involved. we just want to be careful lawyers about this. >> the panel has made a case against donald trump. is there any scenario where criminal referrals are made that do not include the former president? >> we're looking at everything. our charge as a subcommittee was not just crimina
