we're on the boardwalk at long beach.one reason we're here, marty and kira, is this could be where irene makes landfall, right here in roughly this spot. of course, we'll have to see. it could jog one way or another. it also gives us a very good vantage point here to see and keep an eye on the surf, which is getting stronger and stronger with each hour. as mary mentioned, we're still a good 11 or so hours away from high tide. certainly, that's going to get much closer. you can also see the sand dunes. they have bulldozed a lot of sand up here to try to create an extra barrier. believe it or not, the boardwalk is the highest point in long beach. it's 15 feet above sea level. many parts of the city are below sea level. and in fact, some of the highest spots away from the boardwalk are only 3 or 4 feet above where the ocean comes in. this area is under now a mandatory evacuation order for the low-lying areas on the south shore of this barrier island, on the north shore as well, and then there's the main long island. and also

we're on our way out to long beach and we just drove up from d.c.f the good things that we've noticed on the way up is that most people seem to be heeding the advice of officials. the roads are largely deserted. very few people on the roads. stopped at a rest area and the lights were flickering a few hours ago. storm is still behind us as you talk to the correspondents down in virginia and maryland beaches. do you see some evidence of power outages likely to come. you've been talking to chad repeatedly about one of his concerns that there's already so much sat rigs. as we've been driving through the city, you know how you come up and over the bridges, you're on the edge of brooklyn. you see a lot of water on the side of the roads already. low-lying areas. again, the storm is several hours behind us. it's raining. the heavy winds and rains are hours behind us. not a lot of places for the water to go. if you have that huge surge in low-lying areas you can see the problems. for house and businesses in these areas and then the larger problem as you've b
