the los angeles fire department on scene. and still working against all of the people who need to go somewhere to the spot where they need to be. so, who is this gunman? the latest information we have is that this was a ticketed passenger. we shall see. but most likely, this person had some sort of identification and authorities know who this person is. at some point, we will learn as well. and what in the world was the motive to walk into a crowded terminal at lax and start firing at security agents reportedly killing one and then walking to the back of that terminal around all of those gates and opening fire on presumably people he had never even met. it's half past noon in los angeles and our coverage continues right after this. my customers can shop around-- see who does good work and compare costs. it doesn't usually work that way with health care. but with unitedhealthcare, i get information on quality rated doctors, treatment options and estimates for how much i'll pay. that helps me, and my guys, make better decisions

friday morning at los angeles international airport. business travelers headed home at the end of the week. others getting an early start on the weekend when a man in the terminal pulls an assault rifle out of a bag and starts shooting. he blasts his way where passengers normally exit and then makes it a actual way to gates before he is shot by police. one tsa officer is dead, the first killed in the line of duty in the 12-year history. multiple other officers were hurt. airport authorities say in all some seven people were injured, at least one critically. the suspected gunman is paul anthony ciancia, originally from new jersey, living in los angeles, employment unknown, motive unknown, but apparently was carrying paper that said kill tsa. in new jersey where his family still lives he sent a text just this morning mentioning suicide. pensacolaville police called los angeles police asking to check on him. his roommate said he hasn't seen him but then it was too much. traffic in l.a.x. ground nearly to a halt. only now nearly seven hours

los angeles is really tough. as a former los angeles resident myself, you know, i know each of those terminals well, but there are so many. so, los angeles a very tough place because they have so many portals into the airport. but, yes, i do think you need an armed guard, an armed personnel, law enforcement at the gates and i do think it has to be law enforcement for many reasons. but you cannot arm all the tsa. because when you arm a federal officer, it puts them in a different rank. you have to requalify on the firearms. a lot of my employees were armed. you have to requalify every 30 days. it's very expensive. it's very difficult, but the tsa needs to be protected with armed personnel and i think it has to be officers. i think it has to be police. >> can i ask you something real quickly. because what about the actual physicality of the airports? i notice los angeles, it's not a long distance between the curb and when you get to security. same thing at laguardia, it's, like, security is right there. but there a
