now here's video we shot about half an hour ago, driving southbound on 17 through los gatos. right as you start heading up the mountain. caltrans signs are warning you, slippery, wet roadways, reduce speeds and that could be key, especially so early in the morning. there are mudslides or debris in the road from overnight, you may be the first person to drive up on it. past month has been rough for people driving on highway 17 and many other roads in the santa cruz mountains. mudslides and debris, blocked roads for hours and sometimes even days. the good news for all of this rain, filling up our reservoirs here in the santa clara valley. i'm standing in front of lexington reservoir. you can't really see right now because it's dark but the good news, it's at about 85% of capacity, which is very good for this time of the year. reporting live in the santa cruz mountains, matt keller, abc7 news. >>> the associated press reporting this morning that president trump threatened to send u.s. troops to mexico if that country's president doesn't stop the, quote, bad hombres down there. t

kpix5's betty yu is in the santa cruz mountains tonight near los gatos. >> reporter: i am standing on highway 35ier las cumbres and -- highway 35 near las cumbres and you can follow those double yellow lines. it's as if the earth opened up. chopper 5 chose the enormity and power of mother nature's rainstorms. chp got calls of this giant gaping hole around 3 p.m. today and rushed to the scene. it almost looks as if a meteor struck the highway. near the edge at least one power pole split in half and wires reached way down into the earth. a geologist will have to a sense the hillside before caltrans comes up with a repair train. options include putting up a -- repair plan. options include putting up a bridge or retaining wall. this is just a series of road problems on caltrans hands. >> the steep hilly terrain with slides coming up on top and the slip out when the soil beneath the road gives way and you also have sinkholes, too. >> reporter: los gatos resident has been staying with friends in the peninsula because he works in woodside. >> i spent the last couple days down the hill so i c

abc 7 news david louis is live in los gatos with that story tonight. david? >> reporter: well, dan, the traffic along black road has really increased dramatically since friday when the washout happened on highway 35. a lot of curious people want to go up and see it. however, local residents say black road is just too fragile to handle the traffic. residents have been waving down spectators who want to take black road up to see the big washout closing highway 35. they are asking them to turn around. the reason is evident. black road is deteriorating from the storms. a large crack has developed that could cause the road to crumble and there have been a number of slides. >> we've had three to four times as much traffic on black road as usual because all the other roads are closed. gist, highway 9, you combine the extra traffic with the road bed with major cracks and we're very concerned. >> reporter: that means black road is the only access for 2,000 residents. clogged roads make access difficult for emergency response vehicles. some drivers heading to castle ro

a massive chunk of highway 37 in los gatos is gone. it broke off on friday. and, kron four's philippe djegal shows us why neighbors don't expect the area to re-open for months... four news. highway 17 four news. highway 17 in the santa cruz mountains is now partially open after a massive mudslide blocked the roadway. one lane is open in each direction where the mudslide happened....just north of vine hill road. engineers are still trying to figure out the best way to clean up the mess left behind. and the clean-up work has proven to be very dangerous. on thursday, two contractors working for caltrans were run over by a dump-truck trying to clear the road. one of them died, the other was seriously injured. we have much more coverage on the storm damage online. for a full list of closed roads around the bay area, and updates on when they will reopen... just go to our website at kron-four-dot-com. the rain in the bay area is over for now... but people are still dealing with the cleanup this morning. highway 37 in marin county will remain closed for some time. kr
