now, when we hear abbe lowell say that hunter wanted to avoid the humiliation of a trial.you saw exactly what it was three months ago in the delaware gun trial, which he also faces, you know, substantial time in prison for that as well. apparently, hunter was worried that his daughter's naomi and mazi would be called to testify. and the prosecution knew that and that gave them a lot of leverage, they were not willing to make a deal. and early in the day, when it looked as if alley -- abbe lowell was going to try to pull -- ask for alford plea, that essentially is they say okay, there's enough evidence to convict but he's innocent on some charges. essentially the prosecution said we'll never go for that because we have got the goods on everything he did. >> ainsley: in this case you either have to -- you have to plead guilty if you didn't pay your taxes. because either you did or you didn't. there is an easy paper trail for that. >> steve: is he going to do not guilty. >> ainsley: why? either you pull out your tax returns? did you pay it or did you not? it's pretty simple.

a shocking, dramatic moment just minutes into the opening of proceedings, this morning, when abbe lowell, the lawyer representing hunter biden. after the judge explained how the proceedings for jury selection said there is no reason to proceed with jury selection as mr. biden intends to change his pleas. in response, special counsel said this is the first we've heard of this. that means there's no plea agreement. the government has not agreed to any kind of conditions for this plea, which means that a lot still hangs in the air. it is not clear whether this gambit exists. an alford plea, although they are accepting a conviction and sentence, they are not factually admitting guilt as per the alleged criminal activity in the indictment. that is a very sort ofin the weeds plea that needs approval from high ranking officials inside the department of justice. that's what we're going to find out in the next couple of hours, as all parties file back into the courtroom. this is why the judge for now is holding the 125 or so potential jurors here in the courthouse because it's not clear whether t

[music] >> we are open at mission shelter so we take any animal, any condition, any specious from rucoons to cats to dogs to fish to lizards. we take anything. we do adoptions, which is a important part of our work, but it is a small portion of what we do. we take in custody animals which has been a huge increase in what we do over the years. a lot of the animals here are custody animals that can't be adopted. they come in here because of domestic violence. we have a program called safe pets where we protect a pet from a victim. we take animals from people who have been evicted and burned out of their homes. because of cruelty and are neglect investigations. the last few years have been incredibly challenging for the shelter because we are at capacity for animals pretty much every week. we have a lot of partnerships. first, friends of san francisco animal care control. they help us
