corey herbert, an assistant professor at both the lsu health sciences center and at tulane universityr, what is it like when hypoxia strikes, can you tell us? >> yes, i can tell you firsthand. i was actually on a plane that this happened to. it's a very scary thing. without any type of medical knowledge, there's no way for anyone to know that they are experiencing hypoxia. you start feeling mildy giddy and you start feeling like it's one of the best feelings you could ever have because you're light-headed and you feel kind of fun. but the problem is the ominous sign is that you've been exposed to decreased oxygen. over a short period of time, and we're talking minutes here, your blood ph will drop from 7.4 where it should to about 7.35, and that -- and it seems like not a big drop but that's a big drop. and then you become add acidoti which means your body has acid that cannot be expelled and then you succumb. the only way i knew is that my nail beds became mildly blue and i talked to the flight attendant who in turn talked to the pilot. this is a wake-up call to a lot of people that
