because washington, as luke knows, is pretty much dead in the summer. but, you know, what could heat up are the republicans' efforts to really start with the scandals. the va, benghazi. how much are they going to be able to do that? >> the question is what's going to fill this vacuum of space we have. i think it's going to be a summer of scandals. you have benghazi. you have the va situation in phoenix. both of these are tragedies. and the va hospital situation is truly, i think, a local scandal. the question is, to what extent can it bubble up and become a scandal for the administration so it then becomes a sort of issue that senators have to worry about when they're facing the midterms in november. >> they will no doubt have a huge impact on the midterms, as you were saying. the house pretty much decided on it. what's your sense? how will these scandals impact them? >> i think it's useful to think about all politics being national. the thing about 2008, the tailwinds that the democrats had. you had a historic election. you had insane turnout. you had

you know, luke, we shared some of our favorite moments from your father.re your favorite memories from your dad and your granddad? >> you know, mine sort of don't focus on my father as the journalist. it's more of the sort of times i shared with him. i loved going to ballgames with my father. i loved going to ballgames also with my grandfather. that was a real bond we shared. one of my favorite memories was in 2004. i had never seen my father rattled meeting anybody. he had interviewed popes and presidents and had many interesting conversations with a variety of people. he had met bruce springsteen before, but in 2004 he actually got a personal odd wrens with bruce springsteen and twot of them talked for 15 or 20 minutes. i was lucky enough to be there, and wrus to see the way he reacted. sort of his idol, his hero in life was a big "meet the press" fan. i've never seen him happier for something dealing with his journalism career, and i will always take that away as a wonderful moment. >> now springsteen has become your hero. >> that's right. >> your dad o

we start with nbc's luke on the hill. luke, this was a tmiscommunicat administration to cover their behinds during an election year. because of that, this continues to play out. but let's talk about the purpose of this specific panel. because it doesn't sound like it's being formed to answer some of the biggest questions, like why the ambassador was killed and how we can prevent this from happening again. is this committee just politics and the blame game as usual? >> well, depends who you talk to, abby. if you talk to republicans, some of them equated benghazi with watergate. the cover-up goes all the way to the top. a lot of democrats think this is simply a waste of time, because house republicans don't have a real legislative agenda from here to november. immigration reform, extending unemployment insurance, possibly having jobs bills, those are difficult legislative things that don't seem necessarily accurately possible at this moment. now, in terms of this committee specifically, what this really was sort of somethin

luke, let me ask you about this select seven. what is your read on it? we know there are a couple of folks that have legal experience, but there are also some pretty hard core conservatives. lynn westmoreland is the deputy chairman of the nrcc, the national republican congressional committee, which has been fund-raising off of the benghazi select committee. what is the message the speaker is trying to send here? >> well, it's an interesting mix of establishment loyalists and sort of hard right-wingers. you look at jim jordan of ohio who used to be head of the rsc which is a group of conservatives within the house gop conference as well as pomp deo and westwestmoreland. these guys on the hard right are not the type of ones that totally stray away from leadership. they're not the jason sort of chaffitz, the ones that tell the leadership to shove it. they'll say things that are probably to the right of john boehner, eric cantor and kevin mccarthy, but they'll be reeled in when necessary. what you're seeing here is boehner really exerting control, exerting a

luke russert joins me from capitol hill to talk about all of this. luke, start out with the republican response to this. why are they making this move now? >> it's interesting ronan, for months a lot of republicans in the house called on john boehner to have a select committee regarding benghazi and he has been slow to do that. in an interview with fox news at the earlier part of april he said the reason he hadn't moved on that is because various amount of committees were investigating this and did not want to interfere with those investigations that were ongoing. however recently with the release of new e-mails republicans show administration tried to put the blame on this on a video and not some sort of failure of policy, they say it was a huge mistrust and that's why they are moving forward. the back story is there's three reasons. number one by having a special select committee, the leadership can asult control of the investigation regarding benghazi. you had the house arms serviced committee saying oversight was doing it the wrong way with a wit

luke, what stood out most about the secretary's testimony? ? >> what stood out most to me is we expect the a contentious hearing and while there were a lot of difficult questions, it was a rather solemn hearing with not the usual fireworks we come to expect which sometimes turn into side shows. tfgs interesting that general shinseki refused to get specific about what types of changes the va will make after this bombshell of a report that came out regarding those 40 deaths that potentially could have been avoided. he said he would not get into specifics because still awaiting an inspector generaler's report about the va and in terms of moving the story forward, what you saw from shinseki was i'm mad, i'm upset and i acknowledge there's issues but i'm not going to get specific about what i'm going to do to change it and he would not say whether or not he's going to fire those directly involved he did not want to get out ahead of the process. that upset folks calling for his resignation. >> unlike on the house side where there's a huge storm brewi
