joining us is the president and ceo of macys, terry lundgren. last night, the store opens at midnight. first time ever. what is going like down there at macy's this morning? >> it's going strong. you know, i was here and, of course, because i'm always here for our opening, but i was a little bit surprised when i went around the block and the entire, you know, square block in new york of macy's harold square to see the entire circumference of our store surrounded by about 10,000 customers at 11:30 p.m. waiting to get in at midnight. so we are pretty pleased with the crowd. >> one big question about the economy overall. from what you're seeing now in terms of black friday, what do you think about this christmas and the health of the american consumer? are things better than they were last year and are they improving as an overall economy? >> well, let me speak for macy's first. we are a rather large retailer. last year, $25 billion in sales and over 800 department stores with the macy's brand. we are having the best year in a decade so our sales a

we want to ask the president and ceo of macy's terry lundgren who joins us live.you're with us. >> thanks, alina. i'm glad to be here. believe me. >> we want to talk about how you decided to open at midnight. 4:00 or 5:00 a.m. wasn't enough? why did you decide to do that? >> you know, i tell my employees this all the time because i made a commitment i've never miss add black friday opening. so i they can calling my bluff when we decided to open at midnight as opposed to 4:00 a.m. last year, plenty early. we tested 12 stores at request last year and a big success right from the gun at midnight. so it was clearly a big success here at harold square over 10,000 people standing outside waiting to get in. so it's clearly the biggest crowd visibly i've ever seen and it's very impressive. very impressive. >> obviously, the strategy worked. i was talking to a retail analyst marshall cohen who said this year would be about traditional gifts. sweaters and fragrances. i heard you have a deal, if you spent $56 -- $65 on a fragrance you get a free digital camera? >> also i jus

i would wake up on wednesday and i would say lundgren to go to the airport and he is deeply colored byket to somewhere like paris that i would book a hotel room for two weeks a major sweet pea reduced to go to paris and i would book of the plaza for three weeks and i would stay there and i would have friends and then i would go to l.a. and i lifted the standard and that the end of the year i realized when they pay you with books they don't take taxes out sit at the end of the year you just spend all your money and you don't have any to pay your taxes so i learned a very good thing when i was in my mid-20s i'm smarter now and have people who know what they're doing to take care of my business but i've lived the ups and downs. if satellites being turned off and i couldn't pay the t-bill or the phone bill and i was eating a peanut butter and jelly everyday and when i get the kids from bringing down the house i had a stack of applications under my bed and i had filled them all out because there was a huge debt. i had no money coming in. i owed money to everybody and my books were bombing.
