mayor elect daniel lurie is embracing that new approach. one that's left high-tech and more high contact. our lauren toms will show us how it's making a difference in china chinatown. >> reporter: sfpd officers are saying they are just blocks away when they heard a familiar sound. it was a well-known member of the chinatown area. a man with mental health and addiction issues. but through their years long effort building trust with the community. they knew how to resolve the situation. >> it's the example of how the community policing is actually working and helping to deescalate issues before they would turn into a violent use of force incident. >> the partners at central station for five years. they graduated from the police academy together in 2019. they have become engrained in the chinatown community. walking the walk as well as they would talk to talk. >> reporter: it is one of the few places in san francisco implementing community policing. as the force remains understaffed, but when they say they could be put to use across the city.

lurie called the city's deficit a crisis. he also called it chronic and consistent. so this is how he plans to tackle it head on. he wants to grow and diversify san francisco's economy. he says he wants to prioritize investments that will lead to a full economic recovery, while also maintaining and prioritizing essential services here in the city. but it may not just be balancing the books here locally. lurie and san francisco may also be facing cuts from federal funding, and that is if president elect donald trump's threats of withholding federal funds turns into a reality. it's not the first time that these threats have happened. a little over a month before the new president takes office, his advisers are reportedly discussing how to unilaterally withhold federal resources from democratic run cities that refuse to participate in deportations of undocumented immigrants. now, as many of us know, san francisco is a sanctuary city, and the city relies on federal funding for its transportation and housing budgets. san francisco's budget could grow, or budget deficit, i
