in fact, between 1900 and 1917, over 12,000 african-americans are lynched. now, there are some big changes that occur in the african-american community. you have the great migration. and this is the first time that large numbers of african-americans actually leave the south for the north and the midwest. in fact it's one of the largest internal migrations in american history. and they're drawn by those wartime jobs. drawn to better opportunity. now, if you can imagine another outside group in a period of endemic racism coming to your neighborhood, it's going to cause trouble. this occurs a few months after east st. louis, illinois, some of the african-americans used as strike breakers piss off the white workers. they go on a rampage and upwards of 200 people, mostly african-americans, are killed. one of the things that relates directly to the red scare is what happens in places like elaine, arkansas. now, african-americans had actually done relatively well in world war i. but they didn't think they were getting their fair share, that sharecroppers believed t
