many thanks, gop vice chair lynn jenkins. we appreciate the new information. let's get reaction from cnbc political contributors jared bernstein. he is a senior fellow at the budget priorities. and robert costa is still with us. jim and pete, what did you hear from ms. jenkins? >> about this negotiation, what are they continuing to negotiate? the republican party's capitulation? because it sounds like they capitulated on the debt ceiling, they got scared by that there are all these terrible reports from wall street. and of course the market goes up when it looks like there won't be a debt ceiling crisis. so that's sort of off the table. now they're talking about the cr. now they're negotiating about getting the -- how fast can we get that government become open? people at home are hurting. listen, if they were going to play hardball on this, what they would do is say listen, that's our offer. they would go back. they would pass that offer and see if the democrats and president obama wanted to risk a debt crisis over 18% of the government being shut down. it do

and then on cnbc tonight, lynn jenkins said they hope to have the government reopened by monday. was that progress made during the meeting with the president? >> reporter: i think the progress was made definitely during the meeting with the president, because the president said, lack, we need to find out a way to make sure the government stays open. and it was implied from the white house and from the republicans that they will not accept any debt limit bill unless they had some movement on funding the government. what i would also say, though, rachel, is that there is a group now that spoke up in the house gop conference today. it wasn't the southern conservative members, it was the republican members from the northeast, from the midwest, from the coast that said, this government shutdown is really hurting us. the polling is reflecting that. you're also seeing some discussions happening now in the senate. susan collins of maine has been tasked by mitch mcconnell to try to sort of figure out, is there a way to have a year-long extension of the debt limit? is there a way to have g

she is lynn jenkins, kansas congresswoman. congresswoman, thank you so much for stopping by.it. let me just ask you out of the gate, what do you plan to say to the president? >> well, we plan to ask the president how can we move forward to get the government back open? and move towards addressing our out of control spending problem and our huge debt and deficit issue. >> you know, i hear you on the spending. listen, both sides have talking points. let me ask you, the question is in terms of how we move forward, let's say obviously he's accepting, he's talking to you all, but what is this about? this is where i'm confused. is it about obama care? is it about entitlements? >> it's about our spending problems and all of those things are kribtding to our debt and deficit. certainly, the mandatory spending program, our auto pilot programs, medicare, medicaid, social security, they're the drivers of our debt. >> which is it, if i could try to get it from you? >> a menu. >> all of the above. >> >> all of the above. we would like to negotiate on all of those fronts. what we're trying

. >> lynn jenkins, my apologies for that. is there a group of conservatives who could still cause trouble as it's clear that the leadership of the republican party, all the moderates in the republican party and some of the conservatives are looking for a way out of this? >> this is a situation that has careened out of control where we have a series of moving goal posts. first it was obama care. you know, they shut down the federal government over that. now they're holding the debt ceiling hostage. i think they don't even really know what they want at this point. we have a situation where paul ryan is looking like a moderate because he's actually willing to have a conversation with democrats. so i think the people who -- the people who are willing to work are now looking like moderates, not because they are different ideologically but because they're willing to do something. so i think we'll see what kind of actual resolution. the sides are still very far apart, but at this point the moderates are the ones who are willing to l

and then, if you listen to representative lynn jenkins after that meeting, what she said was, listen, we all know the shutdown is causing a lot of pain out there. we like to get this thing ended as soon as possible, maybe monday. so, listen, they are running to reopen the government. it would be my expectation at some point next week, you're going to have republicans vote to extend the debt limit, you know, six weeks, and reopen the government. >> so you are saying right now, your prediction is just a complete -- is basically a complete declaration, declaring complete, total, abject defeat and just passing a cr and debt ceiling hike and then just saying, okay, let's talk about the budget. >> i think that's exactly what's going to happen. so then they'll have their budget negotiations, which aren't going to go anywhere, because there's still huge disagreement -- >> that's right, because there's the same intractable problems you have with the super committee, the same intractable problems that couldn't be solved to save the nation from sequestration, they're still there. none of that ha
