an almost madonna and child sort of image. there is a beautiful religious imagery that goes back to the renaissance that is being invoked here. and it is such a beautiful picture. it is also a heartbreaking picture when you think about the lasting damage that the war was doing to people on all sides. steve: we have gone from the glory of the war to the reality of the war. a couple of final notes. in your book, you write about vincent scully, professor at yale university. what influence did he have in your thinking? mr. lubin: he had a tremendous influence. he was a great professor of architecture at yale. as a -- yougendary know -- lecturer. i wanted to learn some tricks, how to be a great lecturer. you definitely could learn it from scully. but when he talked about world war i memorials in france, he was so eloquent. and he got all choked up when he was talking about it. and hearing him in the audience, i got choked up. and that was one of the things, i think, that launched in my head. i want to write about this sometime in m
